Handmade 1.7m Stargate - "Where there's a will there's an 'or'"

:love Great work on the gate so far!. As far as getting the event horizon, best effect is the Chauvet Abyss II projector. Can be projected directly on the wall or it could be setup with a rear projection screen in the gate and projected from the back.

This is the Abyss II projected on my bedroom wall (which has a textured surface) but still looks amazing. Can't get a much better effect.

That's a great idea Cheech. But my shower glass looks like that. I wonder if a light behind it behind the Stargate, would look good?

Mmm....the paintjob on the gate looks really nice guys. You plan to light it up?

Cheers

Spectrum's Waterglass ( like this ) would give the effect your talking about TazVader & is basically what QMx did, just get a light to medium blue waterglass & back it with mirror so light reflects & causes highlights. Doing clear, w/ rear projection screen & Abyss would really pop expecially if you could get the glass to rotate oposite the Abyss' rotation... but thats just getting too complicated.

However you decide to display it Sevv, that gate will look awsome no matter how you display it.

I'm still waiting for someone to do a Stargate toilet seat & use the blue toilet tablets in the tank to color the water.... I don't think its been done yet. :lol

Thanks for the info Cheech.....I'll keep that in the back of the mind for when I build my own;)

Just found this, my house full of Stargate fans are way jealous... just stunning work there :cool

Thanks everyone, I didn’t expect such a large and in-depth discussion about how to fashion an event horizon... ive given it some thought myself but ive never thought of a solution that satisfies me. One things for sure though, a small rented flat doesn’t bode well for home renovation :) We made this thing on our small living room table... cant remember the last time we ate a meal on it :)

I think the projector from the back would work as long as you have the space. You could project it on a see through material. If you line up a couple sections with cuts that would make it possible to step through, you could achieve a respectable effect of stepping through the event horizon. The extra sheet in the background would allow for the person to step through the cut and still have the effect showing behind them. The next best thing to expensive special effects companies.

I second the Abyss II. It is a great effect. My only complaint is that it uses a 250W bulb, so it gets really hot - you can only leave it on for 15 minutes at a time. I haven't taken the time to find a 100W version of this lighting effect yet. I'm sure there's one out there.

Houdiniguy posted some videos on youtube. The Abyss II lets you stop on a particular color...not sure if the cheaper version he shows in the videos can do that. The effect looks a lot better in person, but at least you'll get some idea of what it does.

Damn you, this is a scene of my 3D animated short I'm working on with some friends, a spoof of various sci-fi shows and movies, and this is almost exactly how the flush of the captain's toilet works!:angry

Oh well, you don't know how this scene will end, so I still think it will work!:)

It's all good Ramiel, great minds think alike. Now I've got a reason to watch your animated short when ya post it :thumbsup

Update!... eventually

Theres light at the end of the wormhole, its all primed, painted, dappled and lacquered. All the light pieces are made but not yet finished.

We havent got around to screwing it together yet so please ignore any slight gaps between 9ths.

So close :)

Well after 18 months of construction it's finally finished :) our latest delay was caused by glue of all things. After our first attempt at screwing it together failed we decided to stick the 9ths to a plywood ring which we hoped would give it added strength. Unfortunately our first go using No More Nails resulted in the very ridged resin pieces popping off when the wooden ring they were stuck to flexed.

So my top tip for the day, if you ever want to glue a Stargate together use silicone sealer!

My ftp doesn't appear to be working so i've uploaded this image to my cgportfolio. Once its back up ill post a load more pictures.

Cant quite believe its finished :) We are both really pleased with it and its very impressive in person! Definatly a conversation starter for anyone visiting.
