This is a thread regarding a handprop from the highly beloved VR game Half-Life:ALYX, and more specifically Alyx multitool called The Alyx.

A quick look showes the base is a taperecorder, the exact model is unclear but it seems to draw inspiration from the olympus pearlcorder microcassette recorder series.

I think its an interesting looking gadget and it has a fun mechanic using a trigger.

Here are some more reference pictures from in game:

Aw yea, another Half Life build thread. I'm yet to play HL Alyx, I only have a PSVR and I can't go to my friend's place because of the pandemic. Are you considering lights/sounds (I have no idea what it does in-game)?

Play it as soon as you can, really good game, 10/10.
Yeah i plan adding lights and also the top part swivels which i will try and replicate.

I really want to make some of the HL Alyx props, except that the 3D modelers screwed with scale on way too many objects, meaning you can't kit-bash as much as I would want, and have to would re-model and 3D print instead. (Holding off for now).

I do like that they did at least make the objects look kit bashed, each one is fun to just to examine. They really put in the details on these.

Yeah, the mutitool almsot looks like they made a model of the tape recorder and just stretched it way out. It appears to be almost twice as tall as the actual recorder. I wish I had the 3D modeling know-how to actually start modeling that, but I don't think I can do objects quite that complex.

This is definitely on my list to replicate someday. Would love to see someone attempt to 3D model it. Speaking of, there's a very high quality, interactive 360 degree model available to inspect on the newly released The Final Hours of Half-Life: Alyx, on Steam, its about the journey towards the game, with concept art and props like the Multi-Tool, I've attached a few screenshots, I also have a video but I can't upload it, defiantly the best look we're gonna get, I could have a go at recreating the graphics and text, but it just needs a highly skilled 3D modeller to build the model.

Also pretty sure based on the detail of these models that it's defiantly come from a genuine tape-recorder.

That is an insane amount of detail, even for a master 3D model. Having worked at RadioShack at one point in my life, and selling those cassette adapters, I would say they did base it on some real items, however they have been smashed together and re-scaled in ways that you can't do in real life. For example the four little gold square just below the screen and near the top right are obviously gold battery spring contacts, but these come in with a 2mm pitch between contacts, which is about 2x as large as it looks on the model.

Hey i have have both the the VR game and the Final hours game, i tried ti get as many high detailed images as i could. if any one makes a 3D model let me know cause i would like to make one. ill attach the images i have gotten.

Nice! They look great. People are gonna love to have that. Have you also got the textures (UV maps) for the models? This will allow whoever is looking to make one to find all the intricate details.

yah here are the UV maps and texture files, i tried to send it all together originally but the file was too big. unfortunately i cant add the one for the multitool as the file is too big.

hey so i have done some in game scaling compared to a 9V battery and some soda cans in game and it looks like the multi-tool is about 24cm from the top to the bottom of the tool, and at this scale the batteries actually scale to the same size as AAA batteries at 10.5mm in diameter. hopefully this helps any one trying to scale it properly.

I've converted the .fbx files to .stl and am currently trying to scale it since when i open it in Chitubox to support and slice it it loads in super small...any idea of the rough length of the main multitool part minus the knob? the largest thing I can print in one piece is 196mm. I know it's roughly 24cm but not sure if that includes the knob on top...

The toggles have indexing similar to the Sony style tape recorders that came out around the same time. Check out the Sony M-425 and you will see that some of the toggles have the same indexing "bump".

I found this out after four hours comparing late 90s microcassette recorders on eBay ><
