Great-looking Blu-Ray movies (and bad ones, too!)

What movies (in your experience) look great on Blu-Ray? Which ones look horrible? I've heard some horror stories about older movies (and a few newer ones) being put on Blu-Ray and ending up looking like crap. Likewise, I've heard some recommendations of some awesome-looking movies. What are your picks?

Older movies i generally get on dvd as opposed to blu ray. There is only so much they can do before it starts looks to artificial for me. Besides sometimes when the master the soundtrack to 5.1 or 7.1 from a 4 channel stereo track the blu rays them self can be hard to listen to.

here is a GREAT review site that i always check before buying BR... http://bluray.highdefdigest.com/

...and don't buy into the hooplah about older films not being up to snuff on BR. 35mm film has way, way, WAY more resolution than 1080p video. now... that's not to say that older films will all look good in HD. some older (and new!) movies have awful transfers. not all HD transfers are created equal.

CASABLANCA looks absolutely fantastic.

Just off the top of my head, Casino Royale, The Dark Knight (even replicates the IMAX sequences), Pirates of the Caribbean.

If it's a Disney or Sony movie, you can bet that they put in their best effort.

I agree. Casablanca looks ridiculously good in blu-ray. And check out any of the films released by the Criterion Collection on Blu. Absolutely amazing, especially for older films like The Seventh Seal, which had an amazing remaster and looks absolutely pristine. I can't wait for them to release Yojimbo and Sanjuro on Blu-ray next week. The picture quality reviews for Yojimbo have been nothing short of stellar.

Cool! Thanks for the comments! Keep 'em coming! (y)thumbsup

Any opinions on 5th Element? I have several versions on DVD, and it's often my go-to disc for showing off my home theater. I don't have it on Blu-Ray yet, and wondered if anyone has it and can comment on it?

I don't have it, but I've read that the re-release of the disk (the ones currently available in stores) is near reference quality. The original release was supposed to be horrible though.

hope that helps.

2001 looks amazing!!!! the standard DVD version doesn't come close, many 60's 70's movies look spectacular

Many people still don't understand how can a old movie look amazing on Bluray, bluray can take full resolution without compression to closely match the original film source, as opposed to standard compressed DVD.

I agree. I hate it when people ask why they should buy a black and white movie (with a good remaster) on blu-ray and say something like "it's old so it'll look bad."

Some of the most laughable conversations you'll ever hear are when you're evesdropping on people buying movies or looking at TVs at a store like Best Buy. I oftentimes have the urge to just speak up and explain the basics to them to help them out, especially when the salesperson is an idiot. :wacko:wacko:wacko

The biggest Blu-Ray surprise to me thus far wasn't a movie, it was a TV Show, and a 40 year old one at that!

The Prisoner, sourced from the film prints, looks absolutely stunning in Blu-Ray. There are bits of detail i'd never noticed before and the entire series just pops off the screen. The Avengers is getting a similar treatment, or so the rumour fairies say, and I can't wait.

Others have already mentioned 2001, Dark Knight, etc. A lot of the movies I'm looking forward to the most are the older movies being remastered because (whilst this may make me a marketing mans dream) I just want to own the movies that mean the most to me in the best and most detailed format possible. Ghostbusters for me was a bit disappointing, and the Hi-Def format shows some really bad Matte Wobble and an unusual amount of grain in some scenes. Close Encounters of the Third Kind blows me away primarily because of it's source and history, yet it still looks and sounds spectacular. 'The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly' was also a revelation, despite some evidence of scratches and pops on the film transfer, the quality of the transfer is awesome. I'd rather have a few scratches and pops than have it digitally scrubbed until it looks artificial.

The first Blu I ever owned and the one I still use to show off the format and the HDTV I have is the BBC Yellowstone Documentary. It's not a movie but it contains diverse enough lighting and settings that the benefits of HD shine.

My dad got 2001 on Blu-ray, it does look amazing.

I'm not a fan of Casablanca at all, but I'd actually like to see it in HD. I just wrote a paper on the use of lighting in that film, so it's on my mind lately.

I agree, 2001 looks amazing.

In my opinion, The Wizard of Oz and Bladerunner look absolutely stunning as well.

I have the Wizard of Oz, The Sand Pebbles and The Wild Bunch, they all look great in HD. The original Trek is pretty good too.

I just bought a Blu-Ray recently, but I've watched Wall-E four times since I bought it. Animation just looks amazing...

Don't they usually put the original audio track on there as well. They've done so on many of mine.
