Cinemark is showing a number of movies from 1984 on the big screen in August:

Schedule:

  • Aug 12 - The Karate Kid
  • Aug 13 - The Terminator
  • Aug 14 - Gremlins
  • Aug 15 - Purple Rain
  • Aug 16 - Ghostbusters
  • Aug 17 - A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Last Starfighter
  • Aug 18 - Footloose, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
No Star Trek III???

Thanks for the heads up, Alley!!!

But of course, they make the boneheaded decision to have showtimes on consecutive nights. It'll be impossible to catch them all (for me anyway). I've seen Karate Kid, Gremlins, and Ghostbusters in theaters before so I'm not too upset about that (although I would've loved to watch them again and will if I can manage). But the rest I've never seen. I've especially been wanting to watch The Last StarFighter and Temple of Doom

And yes, still no Star Trek III . No offense to Prince but that would've been better than Purple Rain.

Seeing Ghostbusters on the big screen would be nice. But figures they pick the one day I already have tickets to go to the fair and carnival that night.

Savages!

We've been loving the slew of Ghibli at our cinemark. Seen 4 so far. But I will certainly be claiming seats in at least 4 of the 84' classics.

This thread got me thinking about a talking point that comes up every so often here on the forum and elsewhere...

Were the movies of yesteryear really better than the movies of today? I argue they objectively were. Others might say there were just as many bad ones and even the good ones are remembered with rose colored glasses.

But look at the movies listed in the first post. They're all considered classics; be they mainstream or cult. However, that list is just some of the memorable movies of 1984. Here's many that are missing:

Star Trek III
The Neverending Story
Beverly Hills Cop
Conan the Destroyer
Godzilla 1984
Sixteen Candles
Top Secret
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind
This is Spinal Tap
Amadeus
Romancing the Stone
Starman
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension!
Red Dawn
1984
Dune
The Bounty
Revenge of the Nerds
Splash
Police Academy
Johnny Dangerously
Bachelor Party
The Toxic Avenger
Children of the Corn
Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes
Missing in Action
The Flamingo Kid

Sure, not all of these movies are of the same quality. They range from award-winning to B-level. Some you may not have ever watched but at least are familiar with. Here's the thing, can anyone honestly argue that any year in the past 10-15 years has had the same amount of memorable films? Granted, we haven't had 40 years to process movies made in the past decade or so but, most of the movies listed here were already popular in their era. Not all were equally popular of course but certainly more popular collectively than movies of recent memory. Notice something else...in both lists here, there's only four sequels and two remakes.

I love the Ghibli movies. Miyazaki is a living legend. The non-Miyazaki films they make are great as well. I try to catch as many Ghibli fest showings as I can.

Affirmative. This was a time period where drive-ins were still incredibly popular, indoor theatres had really just opened nationwide in the surge of mall construction. Money seemed to be everywhere and was being spent on movies, sports, clothes and entertainment. Half the kids I knew went to movies in neighborhood groups, 6 in each car.
