Fauno Pan's Labyrinth full body sculpt -- FINISHED, final photos in first post+end

Re: Fauno, Pan's Labyrinth, full body sculpt. Head sculpt in progress PG 3

This is amazing! When do you plan to wear this at DragonCon? I must hunt you down and get pictures! I've only just started to learn the mold making process (for an Irathient forehead appliance) so I'm very happy you've shared your process! Thanks!

This is all based off of me not having a disastrous next month and a half and actually finishing this project. I really hope I do, I've been working on it since May!!

I'll be walking around at the Friday Night contest (so 6 PM on the Marriott, but then in a room for judging and be on stage around 9), and will be on the floor the next day (Saturday) in the afternoon to evening as well. I really am not planning on moving outside of the Marriott though so I don't die of heatstroke.

Make sure you post updates when you're ready to share your sculpt! :D

Re: Fauno, Pan's Labyrinth, full body sculpt. Head sculpt in progress PG 3

Well, I just had a panic attack. I was double-checking the color of the Old Fauno's skin so I could order the right latex tints, and I noticed his left horn.

I'm doing this older version Faun, but there aren't a tremendous amount of reference images for him, I've been working off of young Faun images (thinking not much changes except for his eyes/hair color/paint is much ligher tint). I rushed and looked through very grainy bits of video to confirm this image based off of this one image... and yup, his left horn is partially eaten away! Thank the heavens for having done the right horn first rather than the left.

I guess it's time to tear apart what I've blocked out for the left horn this far, because I need to destroy a third of it.

Re: Fauno, Pan's Labyrinth, full body sculpt. Head sculpt in progress PG 3

This is looking amazing! I am in love with the horns. I always thought Fauno was pretty epic. :D

Re: Fauno, Pan's Labyrinth, full body sculpt. Head sculpt in progress PG 3

Pulled the right horn out of its mold today! It's made out of FlexFoamitX, which makes this less than 1.5 pounds (WOOT) and won't blind people if I hit them in the face. Yaaay.

(Yes this is the right one, this was taken in a mirror. Ignore the fact my phone is held together by painter's tape.)

Re: Fauno, Pan's Labyrinth, full body sculpt. Head sculpt in progress PG 3

I was thinking about using that for my Wolf head, last thing you want is to smack someone in the face with a hefty lump of resin
Fantastic sculpt, should be great when it's all together

Re: Fauno, Pan's Labyrinth, full body sculpt. Head sculpt in progress PG 3

I really like the FlexFoamIt, I've used it with Wrex and Judoon heads thus far and it's great for large pieces like the horns.

Annnnd left horn is now done.

I'm literally a cup shy of having enough rebound to mold this (argh) so I'm off to buy more.

Re: Fauno, Pan's Labyrinth, full body sculpt. Head sculpt in progress PG 3

I am loving this so much. When I first saw PL I fell in love with the movie. It is about time we got a Labyrinth, Legend, type film to come out. It seems fantasy films of that style and calibre aren't really made any more. Excited to see it when you have everything finished and on :)

Re: Fauno, Pan's Labyrinth, full body sculpt. Head sculpt in progress PG 3

That flex-foam it horn looks incredible. Do you by chance have any pictures of the mold for that thing? I'm interested to see how you pulled it off.

I love FlexFoam! :D

I did this in a one-piece glove mold in Rebound 25, which allowed me to do this with NO seamlines at all. I created a plaster mothermold in about 5 parts that I literally need to duct tape together, but it does the job. I don't have any pictures handy of the mold (at work, mold is at home) but I do have this one of the glovemold inside out, right after I removed it from the horn.

Getting molds to line up without seams has always been a tricky thing for me, so I almost always go for a one-piece glove mold if the shape is doable.

Re: Fauno, Pan's Labyrinth, full body sculpt. Head sculpt in progress PG 3

I am seriously thinking about making a "sitting station" for when I'm in this costume for long periods of time to cut down on stress. Doug Jones had a sawhorse type-seat that was created for him and I'm thinking of doing the same.

MOSTLY this is because I know Dragoncon's Friday Night contest will require me standing there doing not much of anything for about two hours, and why put that stress on my legs?

Right now I'm looking at these sawhorses, adding some padding/cushions on top, and rolling with one for the con. It should support my weight as it's rated for 1,000 per two...so one should support 500, right? (plus costume I'll probably be under 225 all total, including that cushion and crazy platform shoes, especially because the horns are turning out super-lightweight). Does anyone have opinions?

Or perhaps these, to make a smaller bench:

This has to be one of the greatest costume building threads on the forum.
I can't wait to see the completed costume.

Saw horses would do more than enough for the job, That Stanley one is overpriced in my opinion (in relevance to its needs). In aus 'bunnings' has generic horses for between 10 - 15 bucks. But yeah, I would trust wood and steel over the plastic ones.

When I read 'stilts', then 'sitting station', had a crazy idea to incorporate one of these illusions into the legs:

Well, thats impossible due to the hoof and leg shape. IT would be pretty badass though hahahaha.

(Oh, forking out some cash for Monster clay for my next build. In designing and planning stage at the moment - Ill probably message you on FB to show you :p)

Oh man if only. I guess I'm asking my handlers to carry around a sawhorse this year :/

Re: Fauno, Pan's Labyrinth, full body sculpt. Brainstorming stilts on pg 4

Both horns now done in foam. I have only five pieces left to sculpt:

Left thigh (started this, will be done by end of today)
Right thigh (want to finish this by end of today too but it'll probably be by Saturday)
Lower left leg
Lower right leg
Neckpiece

AND I'M DONE SCULPTING OMG. My fingers need a break.

Have some ridiculous photos, plus one of me that's out of focus.

PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM GOATS. They may confuse the outfit for being real!!!!

LOOKS F...ING AMAZING!!!! BIG UPS!!! Really looking forward to what you do with the hair on this outfit!

("AND I'M DONE SCULPTING OMG. My fingers need a break. " - Thats exactly why im torn between getting monster clay or just sticking with Wed xD))

Re: Fauno, Pan's Labyrinth, full body sculpt. Horns, mask sculpt done on pg 4

Thanks guys! :D It's even more ridiculous when you see it ON me, the horn-span (ha) is almost 4 feet and extends well past my shoulders. eee.

SO I'm doing some brainstorming about two things now: feet and adhering to a bodysuit.

FEET/HOOVES.
Originally I had several plans for stilts, etc. I still need some sort of stilt/platform but I think I'm going to incorporate my feet into the hooves so it's a bit less obvious I'm "cheating."

Here's how it was done in the original:
560497_260942324027143_2085616266_n.jpg

Here's my hooves right now:
526451_349133001874741_628055590_n.jpg

Right now I think I'm going to eschew any stilts of any kind and instead purchase 5" platform shoes. I'll attach a support/spine structure to the shoes underneath the hooves so the hooves maintain their shape. I MIGHT add another inch or three as needed. And then my ankles will stick out of the top of the hoof. I'm pretty sure proportions will be okay on this, I have longish legs. I'm okay being shorter than Doug Jones. I'm 5'8" and he's 6'3", so already I was running off of an 8" deficit. My hooves are also wider and taller than his to allow for the balance.

BODYSUIT
Anyone have tips for me on adhering latex to a bodysuit? I've purchased this one in tan: Amazon.com: Capezio Women's Long Sleeve Unitard: Clothing which I've used before as a base for suits. I'm going to need to attach several parts of the latex to the suit permanently. What I THINK will work the best is if I take the latex and actually paint a second layer of latex onto the fabric and then onto the sculpted latex... this way the latex will bond directly to the fabric. I know how hard it is to get latex OUT of fabric so I'm thinking this may be the winner.

Does anyone else have other tips/tricks to adhere latex pieces to a bodysuit? I've heard DAP glue also does a great job... but that's just glue! Latex bonding to itself seems much more secure.

Re: Fauno, Pan's Labyrinth, full body sculpt. Horns, mask sculpt done on pg 4

Updates. Sculpted the left thigh and the neck piece and did detail work on the face sculpt. Sunk the head and neck into plaster, working on the leg now later.

Photos!
