Fauno Pan's Labyrinth full body sculpt -- FINISHED, final photos in first post+end

Re: Faun, Pan's Labyrinth, full body sculpt

Plaster weekend! I sunk the shoulders and left arm into Ultracal 30, and cleaned out the mold for the upper arm (and got a start on cleaning out the hoof).

Created "pry keys" with a bit of clay at four points around the sculpt.

A perfect fit (it had better be.) To help remove the original sculpt from the mold, I stuck it in the microwave for 2 minutes. The Monster Clay softened and acted as lubricant, and the hand popped right out.

Flash points throughout were pretty much nonexistant. Really happy with how it turned out.

Oh, and the other molds turned out great too.

Thank you! :D

Does anyone have any hints or tips on cleaning clay out of plaster molds? Monster Clay doesn't really soak out like WED does.

Hi from australia,

I use a product made by shell (petrol company) called "shellite", it melts the oil based clay down slightly, it's basically lighter fluid, try it on a small section to see if it effects the mold.

Otherwise try another lighter fluid, I use this to clean my resin molds from oil based clay, and also to wash down/soften my sculpts for easer sculpting.

It looks GREAT by the way.

Thank you for the tip (and compliment!) I'm going to try naptha when I get home to see how it works. Much appreciated!

I only had to #ahem add his package

Not too many photos of the back were present, so I had a bit of a free hand. The little spikes on the spine were my idea.

Three part mold. Seamlines at the sides, where it'll be barely visible, and right down the center near the center line of abs. There was already a natural line here so my mold line followed it.

Re: Faun, Pan's Labyrinth, full body sculpt

I have to do some minor patching at the seamlines, but the torso mold is a success. I think I would have cried if this had failed.

Re: Faun, Pan's Labyrinth, full body sculpt

I haven't seen this movie but the detail and complexity of what you have achieved so far is mind blowing. To sculpt a whole body suit like that is very ambitious. It's going to be so awesome when your done!!!

Re: Faun, Pan's Labyrinth, full body sculpt

I don't know how Faceoff works but this is a mighty fine audition and far superior to a lot of the work you see on there.

This looks like the resin kit viewed through a magnifying glass!

Beautiful, beautiful work!

Re: Faun, Pan's Labyrinth, full body sculpt

Thank you all for the compliments! :)

Right hand sculpt, completed. Will probably go under plaster once I have more than one piece to do so... since I have so many molds to make it's become much easier to batch them. I also did a quick ear sculpt, but its basically a floppy U so there's not much to show. (I'm going to only cast one of those...)

9001043401_f50b7c2212_h.jpg

And I started the sculpt of the face. This is going to be a tricky one. Besides for the chest, it's the most recognizable and also the most crucial to work around ME. IE, I want to be able to breathe, maybe see a little, and move my mouth. Soooo I started with a (very sad) lifecast of myself. (Quick aside: I don't know if there's any lifecasts that are NOT sad. You try sitting under alginate for an hour and see if you are not sad.)

That's a toddler helmet. I stripped out all the padding and it's the smallest helmet I could find. The actual sculpt of Doug Jones had a custom-made piece that sat on his head/covered his eyes for the horns/under face to attach to. This is how I'm going to work it.

I did some basic blocking out of the face. I think the mouth/nose are probably closest to what they should be at this point. Nose/mouth are almost directly on my own at this point, and I will consider it a huge success if I get full access to both. I'm planning on getting only a tiny bit of sight (through that tear duct only).

It seems REALLY off to me in places, so before I get too far, I did some basic checks. I centered this on my nose and my mouth and those lined up almost perfectly. Everything else... did not.

I HAVE to work on that chin. This may be a big problem, because the chin strap and the size of my chin vs Doug Jones' chin... I will see how close I can make it!

Have a lot of reshaping to do.

Smashin it! really nice work!!!!!!!

Thats a badass helmet as well BTW :3

Re: Faun, Pan's Labyrinth, full body sculpt

Getting closer. It's now mostly about the shape of the eyes. I had to scrap the chin strap in order to make the chin smaller... I guess I will find an alternate way to make sure this helmet stays on my head!

Re: Faun, Pan's Labyrinth, full body sculpt

Amazing work! I love how you 'allow' us to follow your process. definitely an inspiration to tackle a project of this size. Keep up the great work, can't wait to see this finished!

Re: Faun, Pan's Labyrinth, full body sculpt

Thank you! :)

I'm starting to go cross-eyed here. I've already fiddled with the nose a bit since these photos... these reference comparisons are becoming less helpful. I may need to just take a step back and ignore them for a weekend and try to eyeball it.

Here's the update. I ALSO have a TON of images up on my flickr page. If you would like to give me any tips or advice on major blocking, now's the chance. I'd really appreciate other eyes! Flickr: Album di booksandcorsets

Re: Fauno, Pan's Labyrinth, full body sculpt. Head sculpt in progress PG 3

this is absolutely fantastic!!
As regards the struggle you are having with the face, I think your nose needs to be flatened out a little. In your ref pics, the area around the top lip and lower nose is almost feline, it reminds me of a lions nose actually. Like if you took a lions nose and put it on a human face, then the top of it's snout would have to go up the face, if that makes sense
Maybe take a look through some big cat pictures for a bit, might help

Re: Fauno, Pan's Labyrinth, full body sculpt. Head sculpt in progress PG 3

Thank you! :D You were the second person to say "muzzle" and something clicked. Much happier with the shape of the nose/mouth now. Still have some fiddling to do.
