Interesting info on the rain/mud scene. I've been thinking that its use in TFA is going to be re-contextualized as more of a vision of the future for Rey - some sort of confrontation involving the Knights since we haven't seen them yet, but likely will in IX. Very well could still be used as a flashback, but I have my doubts - in the form described above it wouldn't make sense given that Ben would certainly have known or recognized someone as old/infamous as Maz (who was herself good friends with his father and furry uncle), and instantly known where to find her/the lightsaber...
The description of that scene does make his immediate strong recognition of the weapon make a little more sense, though. Without the scene, I'm happy enough to think he simply had a feeling/recognition via the Force.
