Episode 9 lightsaber reveal???

Holding my tongue (mostly), since this is a prop-centric forum, but suffice it to say that the arc of the Graflex in these new films is an excellent metaphor for the so-called “sequel” trilogy as a whole. The nostalgia-milking return of an icon whose story was finished, then it’s broken in half for the half-baked purpose of “subversion”, then it’s desperately duct-taped back together to try and make things right. Unsuccessfully, I’m sure.

Definitely fan art based on “leaks” and theories about events in IX.
The dead giveaway is that it is too accurate to a real world Graflex. Plus Kylo Ren still has his gloves on and when he and Rey make sweet sweet Jedi-Sith love, even the cold hearted Kylo Ren removes his gloves. Hopefully he only has one cross-guarded “saber”.

Ewww.

Lmao!!!

Given how weirdly obsessed everyone was with the Graflex in VII and VIII, I'd be shocked if it doesn't come back in SOME way, but I really hope it's not as Rey's real lightsaber.

I still think it's weird Kylo Ren was so obsessed with Anakin's last Jedi lightsaber instead of Darth Vader's. I mean, with the wiping out of the EU, they were both presumed lost, right?

That poster isn't well done enough to be real.

That said, my first thought after seeing the Light Saber break, was that they're going to patch it up like Kylo's with silly exposed wires and make it stupid crackly like his.

I know it's silly, but I want to see her with a new saber that she learned to make. Not some half assed messy saber for some pointless parallel to Kylo's. I hate Kylo's cross saber, but what I hate most about it is how it seems technically deficient compared to other movie light sabers. Especially the exposed wires...

Apart from the familial connection, I think it makes sense for Kylo Ren to want it given that Anakin's last lightsaber was also Darth Vader's first lightsaber (and was used to commit some of the worst acts we've seen Vader do on screen -- those poor younglings...). Unless he had backups at his castle, it might also be the only surviving Vader lightsaber since the other fell into the Death Star core along with his mechanical hand.

The only way I would want to see this thing back is have it displayed broken somewhere in Rey’s bedroom on the falcon..

Sure, but Vader also only used that lightsaber for like, a day. He used the other one for 20 years. If you're going to associate one of them with Vader, it's pretty clear which. And if they can just say "Someone found Anakin's lightsaber, somewhere, somehow," they could have done the same with Vader's. Kylo Ren tracked down Vader's helmet, after all.

I mean, I know why it's Anakin's and not Vader's. Anakin's has pride of place in many ways, where Vader's was never more than a prop. It just seems weird from a character motivation standpoint to me

I'd actually really like to see it displayed that way. I don't think it makes sense for her to just throw it away

The GRAFLEX is something of a cursed and morbid weapon when you think about it...I mean, it was used to slaughter children, wasn’t it? And whomever weided it in any duel didn’t exactly come out on top (well, until Rey, of course).

I dunno... falling into the bowels of Cloud City or left melted in a dark corner of Endor to be found later is one thing - being atomized in the Death Star's reactor shaft before being exploded along with the rest of the station for good measure is another.

Originally and we know can confirm this as true. There was a scene with kylo and the knights pillaging a village. And some how the graflex got into the hands of the clan leader. This is now part of the Rey flash back scene when she touches it

You can actually hear the graflex ignite, then kylo’s ignited and you see kylo stab him.

There is a scene that was filmed where the clan leader was on the ground with the graflex (in the mud and rain, I forget if kylo kicks him.. to check if he’s dead)

and before kylo bends over to pick up the graflex, Maz jumps in, steals it and goes on the run

Some how kylo found or heard of this lightsaber and tracked it down.. don’t forget during the rule of the empire owning a lightsaber was illegal (canon wise) and if found were suppose to be surrendered to the empire and they destroyed them in a public ceremony

So by this time in the Star Wars universe lightsabers are even more rare..

Anyway.. look at me babble. This explains why when Finn ignites the graflex kylo yells “that lightsaber, it belongs to me!!”

I knew when I first saw it in the theater something had to be cut.. they left something important out about the connection between kylo and the graflex.. years later we finally found out

... that rain scene has like 3 different origin stories.. the last one we see is what we got. But there are a few other parts filmed that we never got to see..

Where did you hear/see this at? And why am I just now hearing about it!?

There was a article in some magazine with Lupita, she went into detail about the scene that was filmed

I believe there was even a picture of her holding the graflex in front of a green screen we never saw before

Cool! I'll have to go do some Google-ing. Thanks

Well everyone knows that there's nothing like some exposed wires to show that the item has been cobbled together. I think it's a unwritten rule in prop making:D
