EP VII Millennium Falcon

I know there have been attempts and depictions in the past, but I've always wondered what a "stock" YT-1300 would look like. Probably more streamlined with more coverings and plating, perhaps no dish or antennae, smaller cannons...etc?
I always envisioned the falcon as having smooth sides like mentioned, I thought the original idea was mentioned by a designer that because of all the repairs over the years Han and chewie got fed up replacing them , so left them off for ease of access , the other thing that I always thought was a miss is every yt-1300 looks like the falcon, it shouldn't it should be smooth as Han and chewie added armour plates from an imperial ship , always thought they missed a trick with this when showing the falcon in the prequels .
Ultimately this new pipe work looks to me like they are aligning the full falcon mock up with the model . I never understood why the set people could get the flat 12 engine details on the set falcon spot on but couldn't replicate the rotary engine and gear box at the cockpit ,
hopefully the new anthology films will fill in some falcon history on screen but also let us see other YT variants in regular use .

closing in on the finished port mandible. Thanks Maruska!

Somebody still needs to get me measurements of the parts this print will be replacing!

Vacformedhero, this might satisfy that itch: http://deeplyobsessed.blogspot.com/2013/10/ralph-mcquarrie-millennium-falcon-part-5.html

a model I built of the McQuarrie Falcon. I can definitely see the Falcon starting out as a ship like this... come to think of it, might be fun to reconsile the two, use the blank body of the Falcon as we know it, and detail it like the McQuarrie version... hmmmm... (as if I need another project... yeah who am I kidding, I always need another project!)

Oh here's a good question for ya... if the Radar Dish is what helped them to determine a path for lightspeed travel, when Lando busted it in ROTJ how were they able to jump into Lightspeed with it gone after blowing up the deathstar?

I always took it that the radar dish would be for navigating local traffic...the NAV computer would handle the math needed for the jump to light speed. Lando and crew would be okay without the radar dish, but they might have to be more careful around the fleet.

The exposed tubes, wires and other bobs are definitely inspired by Georges hot rod past, and fear not for them in a firefight. That's why the Falcon has deflector shields.

I love the smooth McQ-ish Falcon, though I always pictured more rounded fairings on the side instead of flat panels. That goes back to the hot rods and removing the fenders from '32 Fords. The Falcon is the Milner's Deuce Coupe of Star Wars. The sides are gone, Panels missing, pipes and scoops hanging out...and faster than the designers ever planned on.

It's just missing it's **** yellow paint is all.

I know , I'm starting to think that being a good model making is ignoring leaps of inspiring ideas and just GET ON WITH WHAT YOUR DOING , I'm only back modelling a short time and I have 4 projects on the go .
I'm a big fan of maruska's site. And you and Jaitea's mcqarrie falcon are very cool.
One question on your 3d parts , is it possible to order them , specifically singularly?

render.png

still pluggin away at this thing...

Steve... I'd love to know the settings you're using for your renders. They come out so pretty and realistic. Mine always look so yuck! :) But then again I know you're using Sketchup with Indigo... I'm using TrueSpace so there's that... but I can import my models into Sketchup! :)

it took me a long time to figure out indigo, and half the time it still looks pretty terrible. You have no idea how many bazillions of crap renders never get seen by anyone but me. But honestly I never really play with the settings, virtually everything is at default. It's been more a matter of lighting choices.

Yeah I think that is what my problem is... the lighting... can't quite seem to figure it out. The way it's setup for the hours/month/day of the year makes no sense to me sometimes... in Truespace you have a arrow that is centered in the middle of the workspace. The arrow is the direction the light is coming from and where it's going... by rotating it you can basically set the direction you want the light to come from automatically. Can't quite figure out the lighting in SU.

Why don't you guys use Keyshot? It's like a snapshot camera: anybody can make a pretty rendering.

Thoughts about the Millennium Falcon in "Star Wars The Force Awakens"

Hi,

as a huge fan of the Millennium Falcon I would like to start a thread about this ship.
Abrams makes it the star of the show in the movie, giving it a lot of screentime.
There are a couple of things in the movie that made me wonder and I like to hear you thoughts about it.

- Biggest problem I have in this movie is the fact that Han Solo is so careless with his beloved Falcon: Lando had to make him a promise not to make a single scratch. When entering the starkiller planet, Solo ploughs it through trees and crashes it on a rocky plain, but all this doesnt leave a single scratch on the ship. After these impacts the ship would have been completely wrecked.

- When Rey flies off with it, she wrecks the whole site, without denting the ship at all.

- Rey seems to know everything about the ship and all the modifications done to it by its previous owner and how he got his hands on it. She also knows the story about Han Solo and Luke Skywalker by heart. She knows the Millennium Falcon did the Kessel run (although she got the parsecs wrong).
BUT all this time she doesnt know the name of the ship??? That's strange in my opinion.

- What's the thing with taking of and landing at lightspeed?
Taking off in an object with the speed of light will create such a big reaction the other way around (action equals reaction) It would shatter the ship they're leaving from.
Dropping out of lightspeed within the atmosphere of a planet is virtually impossible. It's a dumb way to convince the viewers there is a way to bypass the shield, but I don't buy it.

Re: Thoughts about the Millennium Falcon in "Star Wars The Force Awakens"

It's possible Rey knew the stories of Luke and Han Solo but the stories weren't completely detailed on what model ship the Millennium Falcon was. So this whole time she had it in her backyard but never knew it was the actual Falcon.

Re: Thoughts about the Millennium Falcon in "Star Wars The Force Awakens"

I wonder if Luke has been using Rey as a conduit through the force to affect her decisions and to channel some force power - inevitably bringing her to come to him.

And I agree about hearing stories about Luke and The Force. I wouldn't expect someone to know details down to the model of ship that was the Millennium Falcon.

I hated everything about the falcon in this. It was JJ trek all over again. It moved unlike it ever had, it did things unlike it ever had. Coming out of warp in atmosphere? Going into warp from inside the hangar?

That's just smoke and mirrors.

I thought all the different views of the MF, both interior and exterior, were fantastic! The interior designers deserve a HUGE round of applause for pulling off the near impossible. It was nice seeing her on the screen again and equally tough soaking in all the goodness and not paying attention to the movie. And man... she sure can take a beating! ;)

Don't forget this is the same director that turned the Enterprise into a submarine.

I didn't really think its flight characteristics were too far off from what we had seen before. It did have a little more freedom of movement but I chalk that up to using a CG model rather than a physical one. It did bug me how many hard hits it took with no ill effects. I wondered when it crash landed on Star Killer base with the gear up, would they have even be able to open the boarding ramp? Maybe they crawled out of the top hatches? I don't recall if it shows them actually exiting the ship.

The usage of the hyperdrive in this one did seem weird. In ANH it took several minutes for the navicomputer to come up with a good, safe trajectory and now we're flying into and out of hyperspace with wreckless abandon, under conditions we might've assumed would've torn them apart. Maybe I missed it, but if flying straight through the shields of Star Killer base from hyperspace was possible, why didn't the Rebel fleet do that in ROTJ? Heck, why didn't the X-wings do it in TFA? Btw, where is the Rebel fleet anyways? I guess that's a topic for another thread.

Exactly. I always say that using parameters inspires creativity. When you set rules that the characters/tech has to follow, there's more realistic conflict.

Wouldn't that scene have been way better if they took off but were chased by the other ships until the navicomputer makes the calculations? Just like leaving the deathstar or tattooine? Plus, we would have seen the actual ships those guys came in on
