ED-209 (full scale) Costume/Statue

Hello RPF'ers......or something,

Yes the title is correct, over the next five(ish) months i'll be busy constructing an Enforcement Droid: series 209 in full scale 1:1. This will function as both a costume and a statue, as the pieces required to make it a costume can be removed/replaced, making it serve both purposes. Now while I can't guarantee it will be an exact filmable replica, I can guarantee up to 95% accuracy based on the hundreds of reference pictures I have collected. Now this represents two years of study and planning, so this isn't something I am just jumping into on a whim, it will represent a significant increase in my scratch building abilities, over my previous constructs. While I do appreciate helpful tips/advice, please understand this is my own process and other than detail painting, it will be made on my terms, with my own experience. I will however try to answer any questions or comments you may leave. The reason I am making this, is I am going to the SDCC next year and I am hoping to participate in the Costume Masquerade with my sister and a friend. Hopefully we can get a spot on the list of entries.

I am also posting short videos on the You Tube, regarding this project. Not much more than you see here, but check it out if you like.

Look forward to this progressing - When I worked at TIPPETT studio the Full Size ED-209 was in our office - its amazing!

Thanks for the tip. Thankfully my arms will be inside the head controlling its arms with pipes and cables, using springs or rubber bands to counter the weight of the arms. Without the same principle applied to the waist joints, I would've supported the full weight on my shoulders. Luckily I was at one point in a marching band (percussion) and the harnesses we used served as inspiration for what i'll do to support the upper structure on mine. It's all hit or miss, but that's what makes it all fun.

BTW, very jealous of your employment at Tippett Studios and being able to see the real 209 during that time. :]

Sorry folks no new updates for today, got caught up in another (secret) project. Some updates very soon.

Sorry to have been away from this build for soo long, had another project to work on that was slightly more important than this one. But just the same, I know...

However I am back to work and have a bit of progress to share. The chin is coming along nicely, however you'll notice the holes on the lip are off a bit. I am currently correcting that and starting to glue the cups in place that will hold the bolts.

It's tough to visualize, but these will be the sunken hex bolts that cover a lot of ed's structure. About 160 of them. The cup is a 1.25oz portion cup and the hex part is a candy mold section.

Hopefully I can stay on track from now on, as I'm already several weeks behind schedule.
Please stay tuned. :]

A Merry Christmas to all! and or Happy Holidays!

plus an update of the chin.

Come back for more.......'off to work on the cheeks

Always a dream of mine to do an ED-209. Yours is looking great so far!

Cool, thanks! Hopefully if you do make one, my pics will help for reference.

Not much to update today, finished one of the cheeks and removed the tape. About to start on the second. Taping them together has proved to be a severe pain, but they're turning out decent.

A Happy New Year to all! Hope everyone resolves to build something awesome for 2014

I trust everyone had a safe and Happy New Years, I sure did.
Now for the good/bad news. I finished the second cheek piece only to find that they don't arc over far enough to make the classic D:< face that ED is known for, so they will have to be re-built. So precious little time really.

They look fine from the side...

But a look at the front and you see what I mean.

Update coming once they're finished and glued to the chin.

unable to post pictures today due to blizzard, hopefully tomorrow.

Ah yes, finally an update. They're a big improvement over the originals, now it looks right. Going to be shifting into overdrive this next week and a half, I'm headed to Florida to visit family and i'll be gone almost two weeks, so I will try and have plenty of pictures to look at before I go.

This going to be awesome! cant wait. I was debated between building an ED-209 costume aswell this year but opte to go for a Star Trek Borg instead. Good luck man.

Aaaalrighty then, got some more updates. Finally tackling the mouth, which is close to being done; though it won't actually be done until after it's coated with the smoothcast, sanded, painted and the extra elements are added. Such as the tongue piece, which isn't close enough to accurate as I would like. The holes are too small and not arranged correctly. It's a rain gutter guard I found at a hardware store, thought it might be close I may just make the piece myself which could end up looking terrible. I don't know. Anyway the intake fins on the chin are coming along nicely, just need to make the other one, make adjustments and glue them both in place. Only a few days left for this section, don't know if I will start on the next before I leave. Enjoy. :]
