DUNE 2021 Stillsuit Components

Joining this thread for updates, my sister had a pair of Nike with a slightly similar sole in black which could be a good alternative for the shoes if covered in the correct fabric

Those Nikes look like good subs! Out of curiosity, what does the tread pattern look like? In an act of possible futility I've been Googling everything I can think of to find that same tread pattern as the screen-used shoes to start with as a base.

I found this article with an interview with the costume designer where she talks about the fabric of the stillsuit:

What we did was create a bodysuit out of five or six layers of what we called a “micro sandwich” of fabric. It’s not unlike some of fabric that Under Armour uses to wick water away from the body when football players wear it under their football padding. We selected a beautiful Japanese fabric that would wick water from the body and then it would kind of cool the body when the moisture hit the air of Jordan, through a mesh system of cotton, nylon and acrylic.

It sounds like they made the base "fabric" of the suit out of 6 different layers of material. There's not going to be a fabric on the market that matches their stillsuit design - it would have to be custom made like they did.

Definitely, I hear you! I asked my sister for some more photos.

They unfortunately have the Nike logo underneath

I'm just not sure if they are Unisex or Women's shoes, but I'll keep you posted

I got a sample of some cloth that looked like it was very similar to some types being discussed here. The "inside" of the cloth (if there is such a thing) is a nylon weave, and it has a plastic-y coating on the other side, making it waterproof.

Not sure how I feel about it.

The last picture is quite color accurate.

That looks very similar to the fabric I found as well.

It seems like that it is a nylon canvas type material making up the "chaps" on the legs and arms, and that is over what looks like a double layer of cotton gauze or cheesecloth type material that is covering the chest area and is at the elbow joints. That is all over/built on a skin tight moisture wicking spandex material. Some areas do also appear to have acrylic mesh over the cotton.

So probably a full length spandex two piece with a cotton gauze shirt and pants built onto it, and then nylon canvas "chaps" for your legs and arms. Then the hose work and catchpockets are on top

Can you explain exactly which parts you mean when you say a cotton gauze/cheesecloth? I'm not sure I'm following.

I believe that this elbow patch is one example where the cotton layers are showing. I think there are some areas of the chest piece as well that you could see through to the cotton layer. I think these end up acting as functional ventilation for the costume as well, with areas where air can get in under the nylon canvas and foam pieces that make up the outer shell.

I could be very wrong. I think what really needs to happen is for someone to get their hands on an actual costume and provide more details, or for more interviews of the costume designers for us to cobble together more information.

No luck on my end. I have looked into the furoshiki shoes but those are specifically made by Vibram and the soles are completely different. Also looked into fabric, no lace wrap shoes. The tread has me perplexed- not a running shoe with that pattern.

Looking at the side pictures of the soles, notice that they are not flat. They have a decent arch in the middle, a clear gap that would not touch the ground when standing on them.

I'm guessing it's some kind of specialty shoe, used for a specific activity, not just a regular common thing. Just a hunch though, nothing real to back it up.

The upper is definitely fabricated by the costuming department. It's possible it goes over what was already there, but also could be entirely made from scratch.

How about the pads on the upper arms? And the rubber-like accessories at the elbow? They look look like something cutout from hockey protection.
