Looks really great. The fit of the pieces looks to be really close without noticeable gaps or misalignment.

I used a total of 7 points of attachment (for a total of 14 magnets) to hold mine together but I could definitely have put in one or two more points. I also ran into the issue of it being really tight once I added magnets whereas before it seemed like it would be a nice fit.

If you can't get LEDs in you could put a small mirror behind the red thing. Then it will reflect a bit.

Oh, the LED definitely fits. I made sure of that during the CAD phase. The servos, on the other hand, were an afterthought.

That is awesome... now why didn't I think of that, lol. A video of the faceplate being opened would be great. How do you plan on making that happen with servos?

That is a beautiful thing. I'm definitely jealous. Congratulations.

On the LED lens, though... Something bothers me. The 5 LED show too much (or so it looks like it judging by the photo). Isn't there a way to use some other material in between the red lens and the LEDs that would difuse the light? I'm thinking on maybe a thin sheet of styrene or whatever else they use in computer monitors these days.

I agree with you 100%. I've done some experimentation with a lot of materials, so if ou have a way to do it, please let me know. Right now, there are 2 layers of styrene plus a plastic bottle cap. I don't know what else to put in there to difuse it more and keep it thin. Mind you, I can get it pretty difuse if I separate the LED from the front-most diffuser by about an inch, but it won't fit. the whole assembly has a maximum depth of 1 inch (roughly)

The servos are already installed . You just can't see them because they are embedded in the cheek piece. I need to re-program their ranges of motion and work out a binding issue i'm having with one of the hinges and then I'll take some video.

Is there any way you could rearrange the LED's so that instead of pointing outwards they point inwards towards the center? That way you could still get the lighting but the focus of the light wouldn't be able to be seen. I did something similar on the eyes of my Gundam helmet.

Very good idea! I know what you mean, but I'm using a pre-fab array - a substitute for a MR8 halogen bulb.

(just the PCB portion of the image shown)

And I'm not keen on soldering tiny SMD LED's onto the inside of a curved surface...

Everything I know about LEDs and diffusers I learnt from this video of the Engineer Guy about LED monitors:

Yeah, not much! haha!
BUT! Maybe seeing how they're assembled may give you an idea.

For starters, the LEDs aren't placed right behind the LCD, but on its edges, and they come in contact with some sheets that diffuse the light.
Now, perhaps you could try placing them on the edge of a white piece of plastic (with a cover behind and around that to protect your eyes from the light). Perhaps sanding the plastic a little bit would help.

But that's just my hypothesis. I don't actually know anything about electronics. (not yet)

Alright, since you asked nicely... here it is:
The servo is attached to the cheek piece

Then the servo arm is attached to the hinge, with the servo pivot in line with the hinge pivot

Then the secondary hinge is attached slightly behind it. Also notice that it is slightly shorter than the driver hinge. This is to make the plate rotate a little at the same time it is translating.

Finally, here is a view of the forehead attachment and the magnets I used to keep it in place.

As a side note... does anybody have a 3D model of the in-game ninja? I'm thinking of making the armor template digitally, but I'm having trouble starting it.
