Die Cast Lighted 1/350th TOS Enterprise (TOMY crowd funded)

Well I'm really impressed. TOMY Australia came to my rescue. Many thanks to Jeff at TOMY Australia who actually hand delivered a replacement saucer to solve my issue.

Congrats!

I‘m also surprised. Helping the crowdfunders in the US is one thing, but for them to assist Australian customers and hand deliver it to you is really going above and beyond.

(And I was going to reply to your earlier post in Statue Forum, but this thread has a lot more traffic)

Actually this doesn't surprise me. Part of the reason I was so unhappy with the communication and shipping was that , in the past, I have always had experiences with TOMY that exceeded expectations. Glad they understand these are all new, many are resold and that its best to just simply correct the issues.

I’m pretty shocked. As nearly every collectable I’ve ever bought has always referred me back to my retailer.

For many consumer items you can contact the manufacturer, but collectables such as these have usually been an exception. Though I guess they’re more of a big toy company, so maybe that’s why.

WOW THAT IS AWESOME!!!! Glad to hear TOMY took care of you!!! Man now that is customer service!!! : ) Now you have a Brand NEW FRESH ENTERPRISE!

Tonight I put my MR Enterprise into mothballs and replaced it with the TOMY. If only it had a smaller, powered base like the MR I think I could be perfectly happy with it. It's really disappointing that I can't remotely power it on like I did the MR. If I could have the best of both these models combined into one I think I would have no complaints.

Looks great in the case though! Did you have the case made for you? Or was it purchased prebuilt? I would love to know where you got it!

I'm surprised to find that I have that information stashed away in Quicken. I had it made in April 2007 by a place called Specialty Plastics and paid $270.16 for it (including shipping, which I recall was quite expensive.) It's 36" wide by 16" tall by 18" deep. I hate to think how much something like this would cost now.

Thanks for the info! Yeah it's gonna be pretty pricey now! I'm gonna look into it! Thanks for the specs!

Mine did the same thing with the original batteries. Didn't last long at all. I put new ones in and it seems to be fine now.

I also think there may be some drainage occurring even when the lights and motors are off (there's even a warning on the instruction manual about this).

Would have been great had there been a plug-in option. Oh, well...
Yes, that will be it. The touch buttons will always be “on”, so that alone will use some power constantly - perhaps there’s a board inside that stays minimally powered up all the time hooked to those. I wonder how long it takes to get to “dead” just sitting there… Battery leakage might be a problem when run down as well.

It is what it is, unfortunately. No doubt someone will come up with a mod to run off external power, not sure I’ll have the cajones to try it…

A quick google brought up “shoppopdisplays.com” who make custom ones like yours - without shipping it shows a price of $476 for the same size in 1/4 acrylic…ouch…

So my day job is museum exhibit design and fabrication. Plex bonnets ate something you want to order locally. Put "Acrylic Fabrication" in Google maps and start making phone calls. for a box this size, 3/16 thickness would be adequate. I've made small bonnets myself, Weld-on 4 is the solvent cement of choice. the trick is getting the seams smooth and tight so the solvent will wick in evenly, or you will get an ugly pattern in the seams. But don't use too much or it will leak out and marr your panel.

Interesting comment on my video (link in earlier post) a few minutes ago. Doesn’t directly address potential long term primary hull droop - but the comment in context of the specific question being asked is encouraging for those of us who will not be using the additional support stand. Forgive the stupid question but how do you turn on the lights? Is there an access panel?

Yes. It's that large clear part on top. TBH, I only turned my MR on two or three times a year, so I don't expect the TOMY to be any different.

I believe mine is 3/16, which should be a lot cheaper, and as been mentioned above you can save a lot on shipping if you can find one locally.

I'm still a bit leery about the saucer creating stress on the connector/neck. I get that he was intimately involved in the project, but how do we really know long-term effects without the saucer support? Still a bit of an unknown...

I'm hoping someone makes a clear dome support available without the clunky base or something even better. Not perfect, but it would allow for better viewing of both sides of the model.
