Deprecated Dick Tracy watch replica

Any updates on this, Nick?

Did you guys not get his email through Etsy? He is discontinuing the project and issuing refunds. Apparently the bodies we not manufactured well or correctly or something. He is going to try again, but using an experienced boutique to handle the actual making of the watches. At least that's what I got from it. I assume he will be posting the same update on here at some point. This was on July 9th that he sent the update. Still waiting on that refund info.

Yeah, I completely missed the email. Very disappointing news, but at least he's not putting out a sub-par product. Props to Nick for wanting this done right! I know I'll be first in line for when it's ready.

For those of you wanting an update, here is the email.

Hello friend,

This is the final update about your watch.

To be concise, the watch cannot be completed as promised and you will be issued a full refund.

The reason is that the brass case casting was unable to be polished and plated even by a third party watch restoration professional. I am told this is due to “voids, micro-pitting, and impurities” in the brass used by the foundry.

After many months of attempts to diagnose and resolve issues with the watch cases within the budget of this run, the end result is quite a disappointment to me—as I am sure it is to you. Please accept my sincere apologies.

That said, the watch will still be made, though not here in my workshop. I have already begun the process of contracting a private label watch company and will be sure to reach out to you once it is complete. Supporters of this first (attempted) run will be given first access.

Until then, I can’t thank you enough for your patience and support during the process of bringing this watch to life. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out.

Best,
Nick Mathis

Just a thought, and I hope I'm not speaking out of turn on this thread, but I have (2) GTI Dick Tracy watches. I'd be willing to lend one of my watches out to one of the trustworthy, respected builders on here if it would help in making a run. I am a big fan of the watch and I know what its like to have wanted one of these for years.

Damn, I missed it again. I tried to get on with the last run and I was too late for this one. Oh, well maybe next one (crosses fingers)

Hello friends,

The watch has been my most complex undertaking yet. There are several factors for this which I will explain in a write up once the process of getting these watches into your hands is complete. Spoiler—while making a professional quality wristwatch can be a challenge for the non-professional watchmaker, the outsourcing of a watch to be manufactured by professionals is actually the simplest aspect.

Progress is being made. 2016 will be a good year for the Dick Tracy watch.

Stay tuned.

Best,
Nick

Wow, this is a surprising turn of events. I am definitely looking forward to seeing where this goes. When the watch is finished, I'll be one of the first in line to buy one. Until then, I'll hope for the best and expect the worst.

I just stumbled upon this thread myself, and am definitely interested, barring funds of course. But to have an accurate replica of a movie look two-way wrist radio... If I were to get that, it would definitely be a head turner, and a great accessory to use for a costume.

All I'd need is the fedora, the black double breasted suit jacket, and the striped tie to complete the look. (The coat might be a bit much.)

Can't wait for it Nick!
