Diamond Select Star Trek Tricorder

Wow, I kinda like how it looks unpainted. I wonder if this is just a "test shot", done with whatever color plastic that was ready to go, or if they'll be produced that way. Might be fun to strip the paint off of one just to have a wacky variant.

Re: medical tricorder scanner will have motion and sounds!

I wrote to Entertainment Earth about the medical scanner that comes with their exclusive TOS medical tricorder. As previously mentioned in this thread, there have been rumors/questions about whether the scanner is non-functional or has electronics. I received a reply from EE's customer service client services and they said their scanner DOES have sounds and motion. Here's the actual reply:

"The standard version now includes a scanner. Their scanner does not feature both sounds and motion -- ours does. Ours also features medical-specific phrases from Dr. McCoy, theirs does not. Please feel free to contact us at any time with new issues as they arise. Thank you and we hope to hear from you again."

Aaargh...more "exclusiveness". :rolleyes

Maybe we'll get lucky and it'll just be a jumper you'll have to cut. :lol

I'm thinking this is how it is. Undoubtedly the final will be done in black plastic. Probably the silver bits will be painted. But I seriously doubt that it'll be molded in purple plastic and then painted black.

Per DST, new "due" date for both the medical and sciences versions is now 5-27-2009. :confused

Man, this has been pushed back several times, if memory serves. Oh well, maybe this date will stick. However, it always kills me when the date keeps getting pushed as I am so incredibly IMPATIENT!!!!!! But, what ya gonna do -- it will be out when its out.

Thanks for update, Pumper.

I wrote back to customer service at Entertainment Earth over the weekend and asked this follow-up question:

"Ok, thanks for the reply, but another question. Is the spinning motion on the medical scanner manually operated or is there a battery-operated spinner?"

And I received this reply today:

"Thank you for your e-mail. Battery operated. Please feel free to contact us at any time with new issues as they arise. Thank you and we hope to hear from you again."

At any rate, I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Well, if they can make that medical scanner spin, that will be VERY cool...especially if it will spin at the proper speed -- not so fast that the inner tube that spins becomes a blur, but not so slow that you can discern the silver circular pattern on the inner tube -- if you look at the one in the show, the spin rate was such that you could kind'a sort'a make out the little silver disk flashing as it turned -- I have only seen this speed done accurately in a more expensive med scanner prop I bought a few years back -- the HMS versions are cool, but they spin so fast that the inner silver disk becomes a blur -- so there is almost NO motion detected as it is moving too fast.

If you look at med scanner that the Deep Space Nine doc holds up in the DS9 Tribbles episode, it turns much too slow.

Not sure if this explanation makes any sense -- but bottom line, if it spins at all, this will be GREAT, as it is more than I expected from a toy.

Guess we'll see how it all shakes out in about two months or so.

Ikes:eek... I was hoping to get one before the new Star Trek movie comes out as I was gonna wear my costume. Oh well... let's just hope they don't push it any further :confused

Tricorders seem to have had bad luck in getting to market on time.

First it was the Master Replicas TOS Tricorder delayed for almost a year back in the day, then the delay and current fiasco of the Mark IX Tricorder and now this one.

spinning scanner would be great, but in that youtube vid, it looks like it's just a flashing LED.

That youtube with with the flashing LED scanner is for the sciences tricorder. In the vid for the medical tricorder, the scanner (which is different than the sciences scanner) is not shown.

The Tricorder curse.
Strange because they all are essentially plastic boxes that do almost nothing.

All mine does is make a few noises, flash some lights and spin a spinny thing.

Damn. Ripped off again. :cry

Then again, it can make my wife roll her eyes.

You, and apparently your enemies, can feed back the energy to make it explode!

I just found an article from last month's Toy Fair on the DST tricorders. It revealed an interesting tidbit I had not read before---the geological version will feature the voice of The First Lady of Star Trek, the late Majel Barrett Roddenberry:

"Diamond Select Toys have quickly become the source for high-quality, affordable Trek prop replicas, and they've really outdone themselves with this trio of classic tricorders. The science tricorder features audio dialogue of Mr. Spock from the series, a light-up scanner with original sound effects and a call-back feature. The medical tricorder looks like that boxy, over-the-hip monster from the show, with McCoy's voice, a medical scanner with original sound effects and clicking sounds when a button is depressed. Last but not least is the geological tricorder, which was only featured in one episode of the series, and this one-of-a-kind prop features the voice of the late Majel Barrett (the Enterprise computer voice and Mrs. Roddenberry). Each will retail for $50, and all are set for staggered release in '09, starting with the science version."

Medical scanner with original sound effects and "clicking sounds?" WTF?

I have no idea why the geological tricorder would have sounds clips from Majel, but I think it's cool Diamond is going out of their way to really differentiate the three tricorders.
