I missed a lot of the later seasons of DS9, so I was wondering, what's the story with the guy behind old-style uniformed Sisko? He's a bit hard to make out clearly, but he doesn't look at all well....

Actually I see the prototypes from Toyfair have got plastic parts instead of metal. So much for my theory. :lol
I'll also guess that the Geological tricorder was an earlier prototype too, which is why it has metal parts and those funky lights. The earlier prototypes shown for the other trics looked the same way.

That guy's just some generic crew member that's been assimilated. He's part of the Borg series and not the DS9 series. Hope that helps
Ahh, upon closer inspection, that looks about right! I really need to catch up with the latter seasons of DS9 and Voyager, unfortunately I drifted away & never got around to it!

I don't think he did. How else would he be able to get cute chicks with short skirts to come with him on away missions.

I can't answer for the whole series, but I know in an early first season epsiode, he records his log onto one.

Kirk only "carried" a tricorder, that is wore one by the strap, in a very early first season episode called "The Man Trap".
The tricorder prop had originally been designed as "something for Yeoman Janice Rand to do", and I'm sure William Shatner probably felt that the purse-like strap did not befit his masculine image. :lol
Very quickly however the Tricorder became associated with Spock and McCoy, since it was usually used for scientific "scanning". The device's three functions explain why the prop is designed that way... the top swiveling hood is the "scanning" part, the middle door reveals the "recording" section, and the lower door houses the Computer Analysis components.
In "Man Trap", Kirk is actually just carrying the Tricorder for McCoy! Once in awhile Kirk can be seen making Log Entries into a tricorder, but he usually holds it with the strap folded behind. And he hands off the Tricorder to somebody else as soon as possible. :lol
Occasionally on landing parties, if Spock is not around, Kirk will ask to see the Tricorder carried by someone else (a security guard or lesser scientist), and he will make a tricorder scan himself. But usually Kirk just asks Spock or McCoy to make and interpret tricorder readings.

Another photo of Diamond Select Toys' sciences tricorder prototype. This scanner prototype was new to me. And yes, I know the final toy won't look quite this good. Official release date is 4-22-2009.

Update from Art Asylum (and we finally see what's in the lower compartment!):
"To those who are eagerly awaiting the Star Trek Classic Tricorder we are anxious to show off our final tool shot in a die-cut mock up packaging.
The die-cut mock up use the actual packaging die-cut on the same card stock the final product will be place in. A preliminary blister tray is created showing how the product will be displayed. Now our final product however will have the medical or science scanner placed will switch places with the coiled shoulder strap in the package. Also the second compartment will be displayed open in the final product.
Now a final tool shot is what the final product should look and feel like prior to paint. The production process goes from a first shot to this final generation where all final modifications and tolerance fittings should be completed from reviewing previous generations. One of the things to take note of is that this is the first time we are revealing the contents of the mysterious lower tricorder compartment.
Many Trek experts disagree as to what could be found in the lower compartments from Leonard Nimoy’s tootsie rolls to a wired microphone. Many rumors indicated that this lower compartment housed a communicator or a phaser 1, however this is definitely not the case and a phaser 1 could not fit in the lower compartment a natural or accessible position. Early in the design stages of the tricorder we both wanted to incorporate features that has not been showcased in any previous Tricorder product and yet still be faithful to the established technology in the Trek Universe.
In addition to from reviewing various TOS episodes featuring the tricorder, we enlisted the help of CBS Paramount’s resident Trek historian and HMS Creative know for their prop work on Star Trek The next Generation and Deep Space Nine. After numerous discussions and lengthy deliberations the answer was obvious and clear that the lower compartment would just contain Tricorder disc storage as well as a slot for a medical scanner or Science scanner. Though the discs are not removable on the tricorder the design allowed us to also hide the battery compartment in the tricorder.
Stay tuned for our next update that will feature a tube video demonstrating the various electronic features of the Star Trek Classic Tricorder."

The more I see of this toy the more impressed I am. They're really gone above and beyond to make this piece outstanding. Other than the lack of metal parts this really goes pretty deep into prop replica territory, and way beyond anything else they've done so far. Which is really saying something, considering how well they already done.

I like it! The only thing that doesn't quite thrill me is the "silver." I wonder if there's any way to improve this with out having to resort to extremely expensive metal replacement parts.
