Diamond Select Star Trek Tricorder

As I kid I used to watch "Squire" all the time, because I thought Trelane was hilarious. Whenever the Geology guy came on, I remember thinking "This guy is a less cool McCoy. And who the heck is DeSall?!"

Hey gang! FINALLY got myself the science tricorder on the cheap. It has only one flaw; the 'screen graphics' image is askew. I'd love to take the thing apart to straighten it out, but don't know how? What have you guys done to dismantle this thing????

PLEASE HELP!!!! :confused

There are pins behind the back plate.
You have to pry them out, depends how much glue they used on yours as to how easy it will be.

There is also a easy mod you can do (if you know how to solder carefully) that enables sounds from all three versions of tricorders. A three way switch can be installed and you can select which versions sounds you want on the fly.

Oh WOW I was wondering if there was a mod like the comm that had the exclusive line of dialogue. I really want the Enterprise voice on mine. THANKS!! (y)thumbsup

Can someone please give a step by step guide to getting this thing open ? :confused

I want to paint the screen grey but there seems to be no way into the head part.

Wow, has anyone's tricorder just stopped working ? :cry

I only got this today and after a couple hours when I press the middle button it all goes dead, except the middle light is just barely visible as having some current through it.

I'm sure there are other build threads on these but here's mine at TPZ...LINK

The panel is glued in, so you need to work a thin blade or jewelers screwdriver under an edge and carefully pry until you break the bond. Be careful when lifting the panel out as to not disconnect the LED's.

I just went static with mine, as the sounds were sped up anyways.

Painting the screen is a HUGE improvement imho...so good luck!

Thanks REdYOdA, but when I go to your thread I get this: [#103136] You do not have permission to view this topic.

Can you please cut/paste/repost your tutorial here?

THANKS! :)

Link works for me...here's the link again:

Not so much a tutorial, but you can see it apart. The screen can be repainted without total disassembly.

To totally take it apart, pop off the side panels and remove all screws. I think the wires that run up the side have to be cut to remove the top screen part.

If the link doesn't work go to Trek Prop Zone and check under the TOS forum for tricorders.

This is what i'm getting.

I think you must be seeing it ok because you're logged into there.

Regards the fault I mentioned, it only happens when I press the middle scanner button, the rest work fine :( TBH I wouldn't mind if it was the voices button, but I like the scanner noise.

You can try searching Trek Prop Zone.

I made mine static...though I'm thinking I might get a sound module and install it for the scanner sound.

If you look at the back side of the tricorder on the side panels at the top you will see if you look very closely two spaces for fingernails, one on each side, that makes it pretty easy to take the side panels off. Once you do that, not only can you adjust the straps or switch them out easily, the takedown for the rest of the tricorder seems pretty self-explanatory. I haven't tried disassembling the whole thing myself, basically because I'm poor, and these things are expensive for me, but there are all kinds of screws that are exposed, and if you're careful and used to doing work like this, it seems pretty likely it would disassemble and reassemble fairly easily. The left side of the tricorder as you face it from the front is the side that has the wiring harnesses that go up beside the interior strap to the screen and lights from the bottom battery compartment.
