Plus, in this latest photo they've pulled the top panel down to cover the insides of the open bottom section -- presumably to conceal the details that would reveal it to be the HMS, again. Smoke and mirrors.

I am 99.9% certain that is the HMS tricorder AND scanner. Those pieces are about $300 and $150 or more, respectively. So, the $50 version will not have the same fit and finish as what is pictured. Anything that looks like aluminum in that photo will likely be painted plastic. Again, just look at the toy communicator and you'll likely have a pretty good idea of what their tricorder will look like.

The thing to remember is that this, to my knowledge, will be a full-scale version of the tricorder and scanner, which we have NEVER seen produced as a toy...and never for under $100....so this could be really cool. But if you are hoping for it to look polished like the HMS piece, I bet you'll be disappointed.

I suppose the big question is, will it be easy to upgrade with metal aftermarket upgrade parts for those that wish to do so -- and will the upgrade cost be less than if you just bought an HMS replica to begin with?

Yeah but my old... well I forget who made it, the communicator with the clock and calculator in it, has chromed plastic. The magnetic communicators with the soundboard... once again I forget who made them... but they're chromed plastic. Both of these were pretty low in price.

So why couldn't DS do it?

Sorry, didn't mean to dismiss the chromed plastic. Guess we'll see. But MY guess is that they'll release it with painted silver plastic (for all metal parts) and the CHROMED version will be a special edition or some retail outlet exclusive down the road.

That is, if this toy is ever released -- the date has been pushed back about 3 times, and that MIGHT mean it gets cancelled OR that they are waiting for enough pre-orders before deciding to make it...but I do not have an in-depth knolwedge of how toy industry works as far as lead times and manufacturing times, etc. Could be they are being made right now and will be boxed up and shipped out for the current April release -- or maybe they want to tie into new movie release.

Well, it's the same one they had on display at Wizard World Chicago back in June of last year, so it is probably an old prototype.

Other than the flat screen and some funky lights, it looks pretty good to me. Nothing that couldn't be fixed.

Especially for $50.

I have serious doubts, though, that we have seen anything that truly resembles the final product.

Well, I think the final toy isn't as likely to have all the aluminum seen in this piece. It looks like they took the previous prototype and changed a couple details like the screen and the jewels to make it resemble the eventual toy.

Gah! I wish someone would have taken a wider shot! I want a better picture of what's next to it, which can be seen from the angle of this rather blurry shot:

They need to stop farting around and get that Wrath of Khan Phaser into stores! I pre-ordered one from my Local Comic Shop back when it was supposed to be in stores in December, but it's since been pushed back! :angry

And then, after that, they need to hurry the hell up and make the first EVER mass-produced replica of the superb phaser from Star Trek III & IV before Master Replicas beats them to it!

Hey wait a minute, how do we KNOW the tricorder will be all-plastic? The DS/AA Communicator toys have METAL flipgrids and control plates! :eek

Granted the phasers were all plastic, but how cool would a tricorder be with metal crossbar and midplates, and control plate.

Just noticed the new prototype pic from Art Asylum has different dials and lights than the version shown at Toy Fair in NYC this week. Also, the videoscreen is blue-gray rather than white.
