Dewy and Anakin Starkiller's Accurate Qui-Gon Jinn Lightsaber Design

Something minor I noticed. The washer emitter is brushed in a straight line and not in a circular pattern. Not a major point, but just an observation.

Seems likely, maybe on a belt sander with how straight the markings are.

See my earlier post:

That’s a really good point, I’ve always thought they sanded the emitters down after the sabers were assembled. They would have just shoved them up against a belt sander. It didn’t occur to me that all the dust would get stuck in the crevices.

Emphasis my own. ;)

Remember, the props only need to look good on camera, and aren't made to last, or be perfectly finished and symmetrical. For the hero sabers, they probably just assembled the parts onto threaded rods, ran the emitters across a belt-sander with a few different grades of coarseness to get the rods flush (and then the emitters reasonably smooth), then called it a day.

And to be honest, it's my experience that imperfect props actually look better on screen than perfect ones. Perfect props almost read as cheap on screen, it's difficult to explain without showing, but there is a reason so many props have exaggerated textures and techniques that often appear overdone in person. They just look more authentic.

Yep. Perfectly imperfect.

I can't wait to sign up for this. Is there a rough quote yet? and I under stand this is meant to be a static hilt, but will there be any afterthought for FX-ing?

On the subject of length, in the famous BTS sequence, Ewan says the other hilt would be better suited for Liam Neeson because he’s taller (and would logically have bigger hands, thus being more confortable wielding a longer hilt). But instead of the QGJ hilt actually being longer than the OWK, couldn’t it just be that the proportions are different? The grip section on the OWK hilt is rather small, whereas the QGJ hilt is almost all grip, thus more accomodating for larger hands. This would make sense even if the props are actually the same length overall (or very close).
