Denuo Novo Blue Leader helmet

The x-wing helmets are made in China. They come shipped with top and bottom formed foam pieces, a product info card, and the generic "Star Wars" card on top. It has a chin strap and extra foam inserts for fitting in a bag. Like the Red 5 helmet it is missing the wire that comes out the back and the small bump on the right side near the front. The small bump is painted as a circle. The weathering is pretty well done on this helmet. It appears all of the stripes and logos are decals.

There are some new photos of the Kylo Ren helmet.

I'm liking the Merrick helmet. Waiting on mine to ship.

If I wanted to add the wire at the back are there any found parts I could use?

There are some new photos of the Kylo Ren helmet.

Those are pictures that a website about 6 weeks ago published once they showed this was on preorder. No idea why Denuo was so slow to update their own website.

These photos look different than the ones from weeks ago. The red lines are more prominent. I don't know if there are any other differences in the helmet. The photos are certainly different than the older ones.

From several weeks ago.

This is now on the DN site.

Awww you are correct. I am hoping this helmet will be available in person at Celebration.

The Wire on the back is not a feature of the Screen Used Props but a part EFX and Later RS used to mimic the Racal Headset that was worn inside the Helmets in A New Hope, the Rogue One Helmets that the Anovos/DN helmets are based on only have the Mic.

The Anovos Rey has the wire. I don't know if the Denuo Novo will.

Red Leader > nice overall. Those light colored scratches aren't right though.
The actual helmet had plenty of light scratches. The pattern of the scratches isn't quite right, but that isn't surprising for a mass produced helmet. I haven't seen any mass produced x-wing helmet that gets the weathering to the same level as the actual props. I guess it is too time consuming.

At first I was worried they got the right side of the helmet wrong because of the below shot from ANH. This is actually the left side of the helmet. For some reason it was flipped in the film.

My Blue Leader helmet arrived today and I'm disappointed.
I had to pull up some old prototype photos because as soon as I held the unit, things seemed off and felt a bit cheap...
First thing I noticed was the interior:
  • "Wasn't the inside quilted?"
  • "The earcups were different?"
star_wars_general_merrick_blue_squadron_helmet_00.jpg

I understand things change in production (I see the prototype note in the original) but the final product is a let down. It's a basic velcro compatible soft padded fabric and the adjustable pads are basic (two small squares for the sides/back and a circular one for the top. The lining does not cover the mounting hardware used to attach the visor
As for the earcups, there is a different stitch pattern and the pleather is different. No real complaints there.

The base paint and deco application is pretty good. Some of the decals used have scratches and weathering printed into them versus being die cut or actually scratched out. This wouldn't be so bad if the white in the stickers and the white in the helmet plastic were closer but they're a shade or two off. It'll pass the 10 foot test but it starts to pop a bit more as you get closer.. There are however some actual scratches in my helmet. At first this threw me off given what I saw with the stickers and some of the paint application but it's a nice touch.

The weathering is alright. The under part of the mohawk, when looking from the bottom, has almost no yellow paint visible on my unit. (I'm tempted to try and fix it on my own). There are a few spots where it looks like just a wet brush was run across it. Other areas are better and appear to be dry brushed. Given the gloss of the base paint, the matte paint weathering stands out nicely.

The Microphone bendy arm is very flimsy. You can blow on it and shakes/moves a fair amount. I was hoping for something a bit stiffer.

My chin strap is is covered in little black dots versus strokes of weathering paint. It's clearly cut from a large vacuform piece of plastic and the edges are a tad sharp. If this was just sold as a shelf/display piece, fine, but this was sold as wearable. Hitting the edges with a sander would have been nice. This is all fixable but is disappointing none the less.

The shipping box and packaging are fine. If you're someone who likes to display boxes or maybe ordered several units to sell, you'll need to get creative as its just a brown box. The paper inserts inside are nice but nothing to gawk over.

As I'm sure you can tell from my general tone, I'm not pleased with this helmet. I don't own any of the older Anovos X-Wing helmets to compare this to but I do have their storm trooper kit, First Order storm trooper helmet, droid caller and a few other things I'm likely forgetting. All of those items felt a bit more substantial than this. Yes I get that this is ABS vacuum formed like the original prop but it feels rather thin. Plastic a hair thicker would have been nice or some internal structure. While my unit had a "QC Passed" sticker on it, the screws securing the visor are very loose. None of this in my mind adds up to a $600 product nor does it add up to the nearly $400 I paid nearly 5 years ago. Unless you're getting a good deal, or have cash to burn, I can't recommend it.

Do you have any photos to show?

Since the topic of the interiors of the x-wing helmets came up, here are some photos of mine.

The Anovos has the nicest appearing interior. It is kind of a pleated look cut to fit the shapes of the helmet well. It has velcro in certain areas for the pads and earcups. The Denuo Novo and RS are both clothlike that velcro can stick to anywhere.

The Anovos visor attachment is covered. The Denuo Novo visor screws are exposed. The RS visor attaches with a strip of velcro. I don't believe the Anovos visor is adjustable. The Denuo Novo isn't adjustable unless you want to alter where the screws are. The RS is adjustable but it is challenging to get the visor lined up straight without the velcro constantly grabbing onto the interior lining.

Mic wire stiffness (1 = floppy, 10 = can't be bent): Anovos 7, Denuo Novo 4, RS 9

Earcups (left: Anovos, center: Denuo Novo, right: RS)

Earcup-2.jpg

Chinstraps (top: Denuo Novo, bottom: RS) The Anovos Rey does not have a chinstrap. The Denuo Novo is attached to snaps. There are three snaps inside so you have some options for placement. The RS is attached with velcro so you can put it wherever you want inside the helmet. Obviosuly the shape of the chincup is quite different. The weathering is pretty similar. From the screenshots in ANH it looks like the shape of the chincup varied from helmet to helmet. The weathering in ANH appears to be pretty much just some black weathering. On some the weathering is heavier than others.

I have an RS X-Wing Helmet, I think my Visors glued in, and I believe their Helmet padding is available separately from Imperial Boots.

I have several RS x-wing helmets. All of mine are velcroed. RS offered replacement visors when they realized the visors they sent out early were trimmed too much. The velcro is pretty strong and hard to see since it is black against black cloth. I would be very surprised if yours isn't velcroed.

Anybody have any tips or tricks to remove some of the excess weathering from the Denuo novo Shoretrooper helmet, looks like they applied it with a paintbrush!
