Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build - FINAL p.20!

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

Looks fantastic! Once you start molding, are we going to get a shot of your dog surrounded by Thomas buckets...or is he more of a Guy-Man fan? :lol

And a serious question: What kind of glue (Presumably it's some form of Gorilla Glue) do you use on your styrene? I've yet to find something I'm completely happy with, and so I'm in the market for a new glue.

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

I think Thomas can be broken down into simple shapes that give you a much better starting point but on Guy it's more complicated.

Agreed. Though, hopefully when I make the tron variant Guy-man, it'll go as quickly. I can dream...

heh, I might be able to get another corgi-helmet shot. He's a lot fatter puppy now though, so it'll take more helmets to surround him.

As for glue, I buy 20-packs of the cheapest, crappiest superglue that Home Depot carries. You might see some empty bottles in the background of some of my pictures. Works great - I've glued my hands to this bucket more times than I can count.

Great work! This makes me super excited about my build. Keep it up!

I'm looking forward to seeing your fancy 3D piece chromed as well! Nice to see you've created an account here.

Somewhat unrelated picture - I made a small spray booth to do some paint work indoors and i love this thing so far. Now I can paint (moderately sized things) in the rain, at night - this is awesome!

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

That's very clever, i'll have to save that picture for later and possibly make something similar.

On a related note is it just me or is there far less resource avilable for Thomas' Discovery helmet than Guys? Specifically, the light bars and led's on either side of the visor. I can't seem to find any good images of this area that arn't tiny.

I swear I had a big closeup picture that showed all the electronics in the visor but now I can't find it.

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

That build is just so so pretty, can't wait to see it all shiny and chrome...

Off the top of my head this is the best one I have, scanned from a magazine I bought. Its kind of grainy, and that odd black trim is partially in the way.

There are a few shots of that section of his display in the "Something about us" Helmet Video I am sure most of us have already seen. I took a screen cap of the clearest shot of it for good measure:

Generally speaking, it seems like a mini version of Guy-Man's display. Rainbows, EQ meter style LEDS, and a little 4 LED chaser that looks like it can do different colors.

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

It was a different picture. Maybe i'm just making things up.

That video is also the best refrence I could find too. I think there's 4 color bars in the side, the one at the bottom is really small. But sometimes it looks like there's only 3. Also at one point the ears had 4 colors, Yellow, Red, Magenta, and Blue, and then only three, Yellow, Red, and Blue.

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

Aw great Harrison,it looks awesomely accurate
But...
As I see you're doing the ''serious mouth'' helmet, but if I remember well this one never had lights...right ?
You're actually making the one that they had at Alive2007 tour for exemple, when they decided to go with more serious clothes and stopped ''flashy-funky'' clothes from 90's'and earlier (wich explains why they removed lights, a more ''sobre'' style as we say here in france)

But well, I shouldn't speak that fast, we all know you as a...kind of magician ? :D

He said he was making both.

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

Here's some more refrence I was able to dig up for Thomas' Discovery helmet.

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

Cool shot Spike,oh and didnt seen that Harrison said he's'going to make both...anyway
I really dont know how the hell they can see trough that with all thoses LEDs, or they're just using the little space between every led to see through ? Even with that, It should be a very hard vision
If i'm not wrong, they've never made a live with those helmets, maybe explains why they weared the ''serious'' versions at Alive2007 ( to be abble to see the DJ-stuff to mix ?...)

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

I need to dig it up but according to one source they have pinhole seized viewing holes. So basically they have a solid inner visor so they are not blinded by the LED's, and in between LED's there are small holes they can see through. That could explain for the very odd/ robotic movements they make while walking around in the Discovery era helmets.

I read this in an article somewhere from someone interviewing them who described what it was like to actually wear one as he tried it on.

You're right - only the "smile" mouth helmet used in the Discovery and transition-era had illumination. I decided to sculpt the mouth as the "square" one for now which matches the TRON and Human After All variants. This allows me a lot of flexibility in altering the design to make whichever helmet I want. In the end, I'll have several options. A blank cast and three different sets of ears:

Blank Cast + Ear Option A = Electroma Style
Blank Cast + Ear Option B = TRON style
Blank Cast + Ear Option C + slight dremel work for the mouth = Discovery Style

I'll only need one sculpt, and only minor work is needed to alter the shape of the piece to suit any of the possible versions. In the end, none will be 100% exact (it will be closest to the TRON variant, as thats what my blueprints are based off of) but it will be a very close approximation of all the variants of the helmet.

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

Oh well, awesome !
I dont really know what's going on in your head, but thoses are awesome, fresh and...volpined ideas

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

Sculpt finished! 4 weeks to the day from when I started the project.

(Okay, technically the ear hasn't been finished yet, but the main helmet master is done)

I'll be starting the mold this tomorrow. It's going to take a little while, since its will be a 2-piece mold with a 3-piece jacket due to the undercuts. Still, really encouraging progress!

The ears should be finished soon too. I'll be working on them between coats on the helmet.

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

You missed a spot...

...I'm just kidding, don't kill me!

Seriously though, it looks fantastic. Now quit slacking and get that thing basted under some rubber. :p

I really can't wait to see this puppy chromed.

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

NICE!!!

It looks like you decided not to add recesses for the nostrils/vents like you did the mouth, its that correct?

Re: Daft Punk Thomas Bangalter helmet build

4 weeks? What took you so long?

Just kidding great work it's taken me longer than that on my pep version(pep Newbie)
