OK, starting on DSFG #2

Using what I learned from DSFG #1, I made some changes here to clean things up a bit.

Re: Logan's Run : Deep Sleep Gun BCv3 Build

Del,

I just received my DS kit last week with the new aluminum side
panels. Not sure why the the side panels are scratched up quite a
bit around the countersunk screw holes. Scratches are in the
opposite direction from direction of the brushed aluminum. I don't
think paint will fill them well. I may have to sand on a glass plate
to try to remove them.

I have a few build questions for you if you would be so kind as to help.

1. How does the blaster kit speaker sound? Did you have to open
any holes anywhere for an appropriate volume level?

2. How do you attach the grips to the Al frame? Are they removable?

3. Do you provide a charging port for the batteries anywhere?

4. What heatsinking is required for a Cree LED? Can you somehow
sink to the body of the gun, the big hunk of Al should provide an
adequate sink.

5. What is the black material you placed around the switch and
speaker, some sort of foam?

6. Any special prep before painting? I'm looking at using the Krylon Semi
Flat black called out in the blueprint. I was wondering if I should shoot
it with primer before the color coat.

Thanks, looking forward to the build.

See comments below..

Del,

I just received my DS kit last week with the new aluminum side
panels. Not sure why the the side panels are scratched up quite a
bit around the countersunk screw holes. Scratches are in the
opposite direction from direction of the brushed aluminum. I don't

Del: I sent the plates to Nicksdad raw. No prep was done to the countersink screw holes. I don't remember seeing any significant scratches on the plates. You may want to send him an email and ask about them.

I have a few build questions for you if you would be so kind as to help.

1. How does the blaster kit speaker sound? Did you have to open
any holes anywhere for an appropriate volume level?

Del: The speaker is rather loud with the BlasterCore. No additional holes are needed as a resonance chamber is created between the plates.

2. How do you attach the grips to the Al frame? Are they removable?

Del: Ancient Chinese secret... LOL I used expansion pins. It's a 5-6 step process to do it correctly but when done, it holds the grips firmly in place and they are removable.

3. Do you provide a charging port for the batteries anywhere?

Del: You can put the charging port in the gas chamber near the rear of the gun. Just unscrew the plug and plug in the charger. No on/off key is needed since the gun already has a power switch. Some fabrication is needed to make a holder that fits inside the chamber for the plug. Can use any number of things to do it.

4. What heatsinking is required for a Cree LED? Can you somehow
sink to the body of the gun, the big hunk of Al should provide an
adequate sink.

Del: I sink to the gun body in the barrel. No need for anything else. Also since I use the BlasterCore, the duration that the LED is actually illuminated is very short. You would have to fire the gun constantly for about an hour for the LED to get hot. I've played with mine for over an hour and the LED never even got warm.

5. What is the black material you placed around the switch and
speaker, some sort of foam?

Del: I use foam board. It's easy to cut and install with nothing more than a hot melt glue gun.

6. Any special prep before painting? I'm looking at using the Krylon Semi
Flat black called out in the blueprint. I was wondering if I should shoot
it with primer before the color coat.

Del: Just make sure the metal is clean. Fingerprints will prevent the paint from adhering to the metal. I did prime mine before the final coat of paint.

Thanks, looking forward to the build.

Re: Logan's Run : Deep Sleep Gun BCv3 Build

Del,

Could you provide me a hint as to what an expansion pin
looks like? The only ones I'm familiar with are the big
threaded studs with the pin in the middle that you drive
in to expand the base into a hole.

Thanks

Some people call them spring pins also. Some of these in 3/32" size will do..

Re: Logan's Run : Deep Sleep Gun BCv3 Build

Back with another build to share... This build is for Nicksdad.

Here we have a couple of kits from Nicksdad. Note the new aluminum side plates are installed on these. YOU get these with the new kits.

All the wiring is now twisted and routed through channels in the foam board.

Everything except the power select button and recharge port is done. Almost ready for paint.

Side by side comparison. Top is my personal DS. Bottom is Nicksdad's. Note that Rustoleum Gloss Black was used on my personal DS. I used Rustoleum Stove Black on Nicksdad's DS. The Stove Black gives the prop a parkerized/military finish.

Re: Logan's Run : Deep Sleep Gun BCv3 Build

We all go a little crazy once in a while...
But dude, THAT'S totally NUTS!!!(y)thumbsup(y)thumbsup:thumbsup

Re: Logan's Run : Deep Sleep Gun BCv3 Build

Get those recharge ports in and they both will be done. I never got the recharge port installed in mine.. LOL

Still waiting on Erv to release the new BlasterCore boards..

Re: Logan's Run : Deep Sleep Gun BCv3 Build

P.S. Working on a belt clip for it. I made one but I'm not happy with the rivets. Need some domed rivets.

Re: Logan's Run : Deep Sleep Gun BCv3 Build

That looks incredible! I like the sound fonts too. The flickering effect is just about perfect. I may have to pick up a kit to replace the one I sold.

On a personal note, I still think it would look better with a green Rebel.:angel

Re: Logan's Run : Deep Sleep Gun BCv3 Build

The muzzles are removable so swapping out the LEDs is easy. There is a resistor limiting the default current setting so it does not push over 1 amp to the LED. I may use a green LED on the next build.

Note: I built a spare recharge port for the DS since I had the available parts. If anyone would like to purchase the spare for their DS? It's available for $25 shipped. It comes pre-wired and ready to install. It fits snugly in the gas chamber of the gun. No cutting, grinding, or fitting. It's ready to go.

Re: Logan's Run : Deep Sleep Gun BCv3 Build

What's wrong with the DVD and Blu-Ray that're around now?

EXTREMELY pretty!!!
I'm Logan's Run fan from the day it opened.
Now, if we could only get a DVD release of it as pretty as your gun....:angry

Re: Logan's Run : Deep Sleep Gun BCv3 Build

I considered using a RGB Star LED but decided I might just go with green optics over the white LED. That way I could easily slip in a blue optic or red one if preferred. It's not as if the optic needs to be thick. I have a 3W LED here but have ordered a 1000 lumen one and driver so will see how that is.

Really nice build Del. I need to find a way to watch your Vimeo videos. I just errors. Keeps telling me to install Flash when I always have the latest installed.

Are you breeding those Blaster Cores? You seem to have a good supply of them. I've never been able to get any from Erv. He always runs out.

Let me know how the 1k LED works out. As for the BCs. I had a few stocked for projects. I'm all out and waiting on Erv to release the v4 PCBs. Which should be soon.
