Cowboys & Aliens - Jake Lonergan Gauntlet Weapon

I debated this too, if I were you I'd marry the two halves together. Its a really easy step and cool to flick one switch to turn all the lights on!

I'm no huge electrical wiz. I can solder some simple wires, but replacing the current batteries and figureing out some way to light both from a single switch is beyond my skill.

Plus, the necklace leds I'm adding have a 4 way botton switch.. off, dual chanel flash, full string flash, and full on. So that will still have to be turned on manually. If I can get the hinge thing working though, I'l always have access to the interior, so I could add that later if someone provides instructions.

I'l be using this also for Dragoncon in Sept, and might use it also for Halloween, unless I stick with my Ghostbuster gear for that.

Lowe's still does have those small hinges in a 4 pack. I'm pretty sure they can also be put on the inside of the gauntlet, so they don't show. I'll be testing them out shortly, and will post pics.

lol Ya I tell myself every Halloween that I'm not going to be a Ghostbuster then bang every year I put on the gear.

Well, we'll have to do it for the city trick or treat event downtown. Last year we easily entertained more then 2000 people, posing for pics and giving out candy. The line to get a pic with us was half a block long! (We also have a temp ecto convesion for our car, and it has external speakers to play a mix I made up of gb related stuff.

I'm ending up putting together two lit portions of two cups. I had to open it up anyway for the hinges, and once I opened one up, got the bug for two together.

Now to see if the hinges work!

Ok, my inner hinge and clasp works! You need to leave at small space on the hinge side so it can open a decent amount. JUst a few inches open allows me to put my wrist in it easily with a foam wrist cuff on so it will fit firmly on my wrist.

The clasp side is pretty simple. I just used a flat headed screw for the peg, so it'll sit firmly, and won't come out. (I used superglue gel on it as well for additional strength.)

I just squeeze the bottom together slightly to release that catch, and open it up for quick removal. I used my dremel sander on the edges and outer surfaces of the cut of plexiglass to hopefully match the surface of the gauntlet better.

I shaped that cut using a heat gun, and once softened, with my work gloves on pressed it into the curved shape of the space where it was then gel glued to the cup.

These are the led flasher necklaces I'll be using to add more lights.

These are the hinges from Lowes (You could repurpose the screws for the clasp on the opposite side, but like the hinge screws, you'll need to clip them shorter, and probably want to grind the sharp tips of them down a little.)

Here it the hinge attached inside the cup. I superglued it to one side to get it to stay where I wanted it, and then driled the holes and added the screws. The screws were clipped down to slightly more than 1/8 inch so they wouldn't stick out too much, snag anything, or cut people with sharp tips sticking out.

Here it the clasp attached open,

And here is what it looks like closed.

That looks great! What did you ake the handle from?

My handle is made out of wood. A pack of wood bars (about 3/4"x6" 6 for 2 dollars at Hobby Lobby) and some craft sticks (like popsicle sticks, but narrower). The "hinge" is made from a bic pen cap, cut to the right size.

All held together with hot glue, which works pretty well on wood if you use a high-heat glue gun and press firmly together before it cools.

Oh, and the little ring is a washer.

Ah! The shape of those lent itself well to your build! I know I can't get switches wired into a handle, but after seing this, I'm muling over adding a handle to mine as well. I've got some square dowel around here somewhere that might do the trick, and I have a whole bag of wodden starbucks cofee stirrers that come in hand for adding simple detail.

Moar pics!

This is a test to see if the lights look decent.

A later test with the led holes drilled, and most in place, just taped in for now.

JSYK, the wire most definitely is not inside the handle on mine, I've just not shown it in pictures. It's just glued up the part of the handle that you can't see!

So I just got my gauntlet free from it's evil cup. Is everyone adding a hinge? I think my hand could go in, but I'm afraid I couldn't get it back out. haha!

And FYI, I was lucky enough to see it an Con last night and it's awesome!

Director Jon Favreau took the gauntlet props to youtube amateur producer and filmed a fun clip.

You can also see both opened and closed version in the behind the scene clip. It gives quite a good look of the back of the gauntlet (I'm surprised after Comic Con we still haven't seen the back of it).

Yeah, sorry Kevin. Beat you to the punch:

BTW- Freddie Wong features the actual prop in his short.

Hey I checked the thread before... Don't know how I missed that. :confused

It appears 7-11 cup is accurate enough in regard of back side though.

I really had no choice. I could get my hand out fine, but scraped it every time I tried to put it on.

I hadn't seen anyone add a hinge and closure, other then the wire closure posted on the last page.

Hey I'm back from SDCC! I used 2 SMD (surface mount) LED's on my HUD display. One in the center and one on the corner of the 1/4" acrylic. I used an exacto and lightly cut into one side of it and it lit right up! The LEDs are supposed to be running at 12Volts but I had them all running on a single 9v battery all weekend.

I met Jon Favreau a few times at the convention and also had the pleasure of meeting Tony that sculpted the prop as well as the ILM crew that made the CGI versions. ILM animators said there were actually several versions of the open blaster. If they needed an extra light glowing or something, they added it for that shot. It's all "alien technology!"

The movie is indeed AMAZING & is even girlfriend friendly! I told quite a few people about theRPF forums that were interested in making/buying a gauntlet, so if you were one of the many, sign up and say hi!

Pics coming tonight...

I am loving all the targeting HUDs, but no one has done one the correct shape???

There are several different shapes of the HUD in the movie. I went with a quick iTunes trailer #2 shape and I left off the handle on mine because it got annoying...
