Constructing VERA : completed

Re: the first Early pistol is DONE!

Looks amazing Joe! Great work! :love

Hope mine will look nearly as good as this one ;)

Re: Constructing VERA & Early's Pistol (NEW PICS on page 8!)

A work of art!!! (y)thumbsup

Way to go!!!

Re: Constructing VERA & Early's Pistol (NEW PICS on page 8!)

that is beautiful! it's great to see all of your work come together at last!

Re: Constructing VERA & Early's Pistol (NEW PICS on page 8!)

That really looks fantastic. I was never a particular fan of the gun, but I have to admit I'm sorely tempted by that buildup.

Thanks for the comments guys. Sorry for not replying sooner but I've been busy "behind the scenes". The pics above are now actually out of date, 'cause I've been going through a few details to make it more accurate.

Expect some updated pics in the next day or two!

Are you gonna put a dent in the lower, thinner bar, like it has on the original? :angel

I think I'll leave that up to its new owner! :lol

Here's an updated pic of the now more accurate gun. Didn't have time for a proper photo shoot, but you can see the changes:

je_pistol2.jpg

- side knobs now brass, not copper, and slightly larger/rounder
- screws flattened
- "hammer" now closer to the pistol body
- hammer "knob" has been given a coat of clear-gold to match the brass

Re: Constructing VERA & Early's Pistol (NEW PICS on page 8!)

Hey all,

I'm just finishing up two more Early pistols (one to sell and one actually... keep!) and that'll be all for the time being 'cause I'm out of metal and the molds are in need of some serious restoration (one is full of tiny blisters... darn crappy silicone). I've made more changes to the pistols, including the one above.

I recently got a HD screengrab that showed some interesting details. The upper-rear allen screw (seen on my first version gun) is not supposed to be there. Instead, there is what looks like a brass nail or rivet. It's one of the minor tweaks that have been fixed on all the guns I'm doing. I actually had to recast and prepare a whole mess of new side greeblies, 'cause I had drilled all the holes. Doh! (Pics coming soon... camera was out of juice last night.)

Some small "Alice" news. Spoke to the machinist. He says I will have the parts before Christmas, hopefully before end of November. I'm getting a little impatient to see some progress- don't feel up for another disappointment. If by the middle of November it looks like it won't get done I'll have a talk with my "backup" machinist again. Darn it all, I will have me some parts before the Red Fat Guy comes!

Boy, this metal casting thing is kinda addictive. Yesterday... I couldn't resist scrounging together enough metal for one more casting. So I gathered up a big pile of old Warhammer 25mm figures that I'd never get round to painting and threw 'em in the pot! Even managed to get some really good results despite the molds condition (one even has a big tear in it). So maybe I'm getting better at it. :)

Also... as promised. Here are pics of my (hopefully) final version of the Jubal Early Pistol. It's a far cry from the first pic above. The little changes make a world of difference in my opinion. Final weight is about 1.3KG (almost 3 lbs). This particular gun is the second I have finished and it'll be up in the JY shortly. Enjoy!

That looks amazing, Joatrash. God, I wish I could afford one.

Great work!

Re: Constructing VERA & Early's Pistol

Been following this thread for a while and am forced to add my own "WOW, fantastic work" comment.

If VERA turns out that good (and I expect it will) I may just have to cry myself to sleep every night over the fact that I can't have one of my own!! :cry

Shame on you Joe! You would have saved yourself a lot of work if you had trusted those hi-res pics of my Jubal Early resin casts that I sent to you!
The "brass nail or rivet" is plain to see.

(Even better than in this pic.)

Seriously, I want to weigh in on what a wonderful job you have done on your Jubal Earlys.
All metal, proper Pachmyr grips, brass barrel, real Allen Head screws;
seems like a compromise-free and excellent piece of work all the way around.

Now ya KNOW, you're not gonna get any slack on the expectations for Alice!

Haha... thanks guys. :lol

I actually did see the rivet in the resin casting before but I kinda had it pegged as a smaller allen screw or possibly some detail loss due to the resin casting. It was when I first saw a HD screen that the color of it became really clear as well as what it actually was.

I posted some pics on Fireflyfans... we'll see what kind of reaction it gets.

As for Alice... how she turns out is out of my control right now. If at least one of the machinists I've had contact with comes through and follows my blueprints then I'm hopeful everything will turn out. The waiting is killing me though!

Ooooh... and I almost forgot something! I was reading the script for Objects in Space the other day (in the companion vol 2) and there Early's first name is spelled with an "E". It's spelled "Jubel", but just about everywhere else it seems to be spelled with an "A". I wonder which is the real, correct version?

Can't wait to see Alice stand up and grow some hair.
