Constructing VERA : completed

Re: Constructing VERA : MAJOR UPDATE! FIRST PARTS!

For those of you not following the site, here are the latest pics! It's coming along nicely, though a lot more slowly than I'd like.

Here's a pic of the scope and pointer mounted to the rails:

During the Christmas holidays, I machined these parts while visiting the in-laws. The silencer (goes inside the flash hider/muzzle) and barrel.

I picked the following parts up today. They are the barrel vent/heat sink and the rearmost parts of the handguard, where it attaches to the receiver. The lower part of the guard is of course supposed to be wood, but my machinist only has metal-working tools on hand so when he tried it, the wood just splintered. (He probably also used a "soft" wood.) I can do a pretty good wood grain paint job these days, so I'll give that a try and if it doesn't work I might go to a wood shop and get a new one done there.

Next up should be the flash hider and the rest of the handguard, which will allow me to assemble the whole front end. Stay tuned!

Will you base you Vera on a real (deactivated/ working), dummy or airsoft weapon?

She's being built around a Denix AK47 receiver (with scratch-built Saiga12 details to be added).

Re: Constructing VERA : MORE PARTS JAN 9!

Hey gang. Just thought I'd do a small update. Parts are trickling in sloooooowly but I haven't gotten anything new for a couple weeks now. (Machinist has been busy making jet engine parts.....)

ARGH! The waiting is KILLING ME!

In the meantime, I've been fiddling around with some color:

assembly_test1.jpg

I'm happy enough with the wood grain paint job... it's close enough to the real thing. The blue is way off (the color was a LOT lighter on the cap). The gold is too green (the first gold I tried was too orange). I'm going to mix colors from rattle cans to get the correct tones.

At least she's finally becoming recognizable. The astute viewer will notice a couple detail errors (like the grooves being rounded in the recess when they're supposed to be a little sharper v-shaped and maybe a teeny bit wider. Not sure yet if I think it's a big enough deal to get corrected. I want to get a full set of parts together first.

Re: Constructing VERA : MORE PARTS JAN 9!

Visited the machinist today and here is the latest progress:

Not much, but I got to see a couple more parts that were almost done. I'm pleading with the guy to try to finish up the set before the first week of April (when I join all the old people on this board over the age of 35) but we'll see.

I know everyone is waiting to see the flash hider. So am I... I'm dying to see it finished, but the machinist wants to get most of the easier parts out of the way first. It also looks like the magazine lock and stock will be done as several pieces and pinned or welded together.

Things may be moving along at a snail's pace... but at least the snail got to the finish line eventually!

Re: Constructing VERA : MORE PARTS JAN 9!

Well, I was originally planning to maybe try and cast up a few limited copies for friends and the like... but I won't have any place to do casting in the foreseeable future since I'm moving to an apartment. (I'm just glad I designed the parts to assemble easily, without the need for a shop, or I'd be in real trouble!) However, I will look into maybe having a shop make a casting of it when it's done. Never say never, but don't hold your breath for it...

Re: Constructing VERA : UPDATE APR 16!

Those pieces are lookin' mighty shiny. You're going to make a whole lot of Browncoats very jealous when you complete it. :lol

Re: Constructing VERA : UPDATE APR 16!

Sorry for the silence. I have her partially completed (trigger and handle installed). The machinist said he would work on the last pieces during the latter part of july... so I hope he comes through.

Also.. I'm in the middle of moving so I haven't had time for props.

But rest assured... this WILL be completed!!!
