Constructing VERA : completed

Re: Constructing VERA : UPDATE AUG 19!

I was just wondering about this project as I watched "war stories" over the weekend.

Looking great.

Re:

She's comin' along nicely. Got some more parts the other day. Check the docu-site for notes... here are a couple of pics, hosted by the mighty Wackychimp:

Re:

It's been a while (the machinist has been busy) but the project is NOT dead. Here's the latest part- the shell rack/ammo holder! This piece is not 100% accurate... I did leave out a couple of small details that were too unclear to do properly with the reference I have.

Also... my machinist says he wants to get the last five (or so) pieces done asap (presumably to get me off his back, haha). Maybe as early as next week (though I'm not holding my breath). So, stay tuned!

Re:

MAJOR UPDATE TIME!!!

Earlier today I picked up the final machined parts I need to build Alice! This project has now bee going on for well over a year... in fact, it's even been more than a year since I got the very fist pieces- the scope rails. At times I kinda had doubts I would have the patience to wait for all the parts to be done and it feels kinda surreal having gotten the final ones.

Well... time to get started on final assembly. Stay tuned! More coming soon.:)

Until then, here are some pics of the new parts as they await final cleanup:

Re: Constructing VERA : MAJOR UPDATE JAN 3!!!!

Great machined parts, now put that sucker together and show us!!!

Re: Constructing VERA : MAJOR UPDATE JAN 3!!!!

Whoa. I weighed all the parts... the final rifle will come close to 6 kilos! :eek

By the way... are people still interested in resin castings, even if it would be pricey (more than the cost of most studio scale model kits offered around these parts), with the current economic crisis and all? I'm "doing the math" in regards to setting up such a project, but I kinda doubt its viability.

Re: Constructing VERA : MAJOR UPDATE JAN 3!!!!

Wow, thats almost twice as heavy as a real Saiga 12. That thing is a beast! Looking forward to construction pics. :thumbsup

Re: Constructing VERA : MAJOR UPDATE JAN 3!!!!

Depending on the time frame to get funds together but I would be interested in a copy in Resin.

Re: Constructing VERA : MAJOR UPDATE JAN 3!!!!

I can't recall the weight of Vera (it's in the companion I think) but I'm fairly sure she weighs more than a stock Saiga, but not 6 kilos! I've got a lot of extra dead weight in things like the magazine (which is almost solid) and some of the parts are done in a very heavy grade of aluminum.

Oh, and I also found out some stuff about anodizing that might explain Vera's crazy color scheme. Apparently, different grades of metal will produce different tones. If I were to go that route, replicating the exact shades would have been really hard unless I could have found out the exact grades of each addon part. As it is, I've mixed different rattle-can paints to match the color as best I can and airbrushing it on.

Re: Constructing VERA : MAJOR UPDATE JAN 3!!!!

The real Vera is very heavy (I should know) 6kg doesn't surprise me.

Re: Constructing VERA : MAJOR UPDATE JAN 3!!!!

6KGs? Bloody hell.

The parts look fantastic, bud. Can't wait 'til she's all finished up.

Re: Constructing VERA : MAJOR UPDATE JAN 3!!!!

Latest pics. She's almost finished!

If all goes to plan I should have her 95% complete tonight. A couple details will have to wait- wood grips, AK side scope mount and barrel locking lever/plate but all the parts I have available will soon be attached. Note that I'm going for a little more weathering on Alice than Vera has, mainly in the magazine area. One reason for this is that the different colored paints are not super-durable and will easily scratch or wear off over time. To get them to look a little like anodizing I had to come up with a mix of metallic lacquers and spray them on very thin.

Main body and forward barrel assembly. (some parts have not been fastened yet so are little crooked in the pics)

Re: Constructing VERA : UPDATE JAN 9!!!!

That is absoutly awsome, I just can't get over how nice that looks...I can't wait to see it all together! I wish I could afford a project like that, lol.

Re: Constructing VERA : UPDATE JAN 9!!!!

Planning on sharing those CAD files? :)

I only ask because my job has a full machine shop and I bet they could crank out a Vera in no time.

Re: Constructing VERA : UPDATE JAN 9!!!!

*Swallowing green wad of jealousy* Seriously, a fantastic build. Great job so far!

Re: Constructing VERA : UPDATE JAN 9!!!!

I don't actually have any usable CAD-files. My machinist did a lot of parts on an older CNC and worked from my 2d blueprints. The 3D files I did ended up being used mainly for checking fit and accuracy of all the parts. (I built them exactly to spec so that I could have a virtual prototype to make changes with.)

Re: Constructing VERA : UPDATE JAN 9!!!!

So, yesterday Alice was complete. (Or at least a complete as she will be for a few weeks/months until I have time to make a set of grips.)

After the final glue ha set I picked her up... and damn near broke my back!!!

YIKES! Just what no lady wants to hear- she was sooooooo heavy. Much to heavy to carry around or even just comfortable hold and admire.

For that reason, I've decided to construct a new magazine frame out of polystyrene and add the thin metal strips and base "foot" to it. It maybe less realistic, but it will be barely noticeable when holding her and it will also make a HUGE difference.
