Constantine: Lighter Project *UPDATE 04-09-2009 - Pics of brass parts are up*

Hi Folks

Back from my holiday and got straight back to work. Hinges are being taken care of as well as the screws, which i hope are the right ones. I have no doubts the machining will be no problem, but the etching, my, oh my.......

I have written emails to about 6 engravers/etchers over here and all say they can't do it. Still waiting to hear back from another etcher, who is supposed to do difficult stuff, hope they can help me out.

I'll keep you all posted.

cheers,

Marc

Ok, since no commercial engravers/etcher seem to be able to do the lighter body's engraving, i am now looking into the possibility of electro-etching.

I have written an email to an artist in France who does this for a living to ask some questions and see if this method is suitable.

Keep you posted.

cheers,

Marc

Photo etching might work too..another is mini-sand blasting (abrasive etching).

I wish I could help more but my stuff is 3000miles from me. If you could wait untill next July I could help more since I will be back with my stuff.

I have thought of chemical etching but am unsure about some things. As all three sides will have to be etched simultaniously preferably, how would i accomplis getting the patterns developed on the body?

Is the resistant able to withstand the stickyness of transparent stickers or do you tear of the resistant layer when you remove it?

The cool thing about electro-etching (from what i have read about it sofar) is that it is less toxic (if at all) than chemical etching, easy to do yourself and creates sharper lines.

I will need to learn more about it though, i couldn't find any info yet on what to use as resistant for deep etching.

I also read that etching occurs at the side of the electrode and a bit at the sides. does this mean i will have to have 3 elctrodes on the to be engraved sides simultaniously?

If you have any tips or can share from experience megatron, please let me know :)

EUREKA. (i think)

I have found out that there is a product called PNP blue, which is printing paper designed for making PCB's. You print the image on the sheet, put it on the metal and iron it on. The film is removed, leaving a resistant pattern on the metal. I think using these sheets i can do the etching myself, and do all three sides at once.

Now i will need to get skilled in acid etching.

cheers,

Marc

The front, she is done.

What hath God wrought?

Mike is sending me some PNPblue, a iron on tranfer foil n with you can print patterns. The pattern is ironed on brass and acts like a resist for etching. I will get an etching setup done and do a test etch of the pattern Mike did of the lower body.

Still hunting down BKoptical, haven;t heard back from them, might give them a call next week to get the hinges deal finished. I found someone who can CNC the pieces for me, but i will have to wait for the hinges to get the final blueprint done because the hinges will need to be countersunk into the body a bit.

I'll keep you posted.

Cheers,

wow, very cool everyone.

I have recently returned to the RPF after a long hiatus, and have been trying to catch up, so don't hit me when i ask...

Is there any chance that a version of the graphic can be done with the correct Latin, rather than the screen used error version??? Would this be a whole lot of extra work??

I guess it won't be too difficult, the production process would be the same. You're gonna have to ask Mike if he can do an alternate textgraphic for the thin side. usually when you tell him how good looking he is and how fit he looks, he will do it no problem :D

Currently still waiting on a quote from BKoptical, gonna give them another call on monday. They promised me a shipping quote a month ago and i already called them once 2 weeks ago, still nothing, pretty frustrating.

Once mike has all the artwork ready and i have the hinges, i can move on to the next stages of the project, the commissioning of the brass and steel parts, the medals and the etching.

The screws i ordered seem to be the right size, so we are good on those.

Cheers,

Marc

This is a fantastic project. I'm glad to see that you're sticking it out.

Believe me when I say I know EXACTLY how frustrating it can be to have someone commit to a deal and not follow through.
