Constantine: Lighter Project *UPDATE 04-09-2009 - Pics of brass parts are up*

Out of the blue i got an email response from BKoptical with a shipping quote (about time). I have sent money to Mike who will sent them a check. Once they are in blueprints can be finalized and maching begin. Don't know what the status is on the graphics, i will ask him.

Marc

I know you're busy with the lighter LeMarchand but in the meantime, what's the status of the brass knuckles? Are the designs for them traced?

Just got word from mike that he has received the hinges (finally :) )

Ones i receive them i can finish the blueprint and have my machinist do a proto. Mike is still working on the graphics. Ones that all is complete i can go to the next phase of etching.

As for the knuckles, i don't know if mike has started on the graphics for that yet and i am still on the fence on what the best way to make these would be. I am hesitant to have them cast in brass as working on another prop cast in brass has learned me that there will be imperfections, so right now i am leaning towards engraved metal with a goldplated finish, But, let's finish the lighter project first.

Cheers,

Marc

are you going for the wieght of metal?
I would think a "coldcast" of the gold knuckles would work.
Resin filled with brass powder and gold pigment. The master could be made from Wood, Sintra, Sculpy or what ever you feel most comfortable with.

If not too expensive (and possible), i think goldplated engraved magnesium r chemically etched machined brass

brass is hard to chem etch...now copper is easyer and can be plated

I am pretty sure it is a zippo inside :)

I can't remember if this was asked in the thread and I can't seem to see it so I'll jsut ask. The 'badge' on the front of the lighte will be a separate piece right? Also, will the zippo interior piece be plated to match the movie vesion o does zippo make them this color too?

Have have about 30 zippos (original brand, no cheap knock off's) which i bought in the past 6 months they are already goldplated.

The Benedict medals will be seperate pieces. I already have an engraver over here in Holland who said he can etch them for me in copper (expensive job, but i can't find a matching one in the right size anywhere), i intend to have them matt gold plated to match the real one (which i believe was painted by the looks off it).

cheers,

Marc

I am starting to think this project is jinxed. It took me forever to find suitabele hinges, almost as long to set up a deal with BKopticla to buy a small quantity. And now it looks like they are MIA. Mike received them on my behalf and sent them my way on the 1st of December through airmail, but they are yet to show up.

The interior lighter is deffinatley a Zippo. The prop master even said in the extra features taht it was a zippo because when you want it to light everytime...you get a zippo.

Totally forgot to mention that the hinges came in, YAY... Had to pay a hefty import duty, but they are perfect.

I also need the opinion on the following. I have been looking for the correct 'Benedict medal' for the center, but have not found it yet (and i have seen every single one there is to find online). Yesterday i found the following one. It is about 95% accurate to the movie one and i need to know if this will do for the project. as you can see the one in the movie was sanded down.

that looks good. It just has an extra bar under the cross and the large letters are missing the sanserfs. It also looks like the inner circle does not have the "dash" like marks on it. But those are things you can fix.

Pretty much all the things listed above, and maybe painted over to look a little darker so it matches the rest of the lighter, but over-all I think it'd do fine.

Can't believe I just now found this thread, would have liked to help out more.

I'd be surprised if you could find a medal that's any closer to screen accurate.

What bothers me is that everything is flipped. What's raised on the original is recessed and what's recessed on the original is raised on the copy. I'd prefer have one SLIGHTLY less accurate but have the right look with the raised and recessed areas. The recessed cross just doesn't look good. It bugs me. What do you guys think
