Constantine: Lighter Project *UPDATE 04-09-2009 - Pics of brass parts are up*

What bothers me is that everything is flipped.  What's raised on the original is recessed and what's recessed on the original is raised on the copy.  I'd prefer have one SLIGHTLY less accurate but have the right look with the raised and recessed areas.  The recessed cross just doesn't look good.  It bugs me.  What do you guys think

I think you're looking at it wrong.

most likley the prop maker(s) made the "oringinal" based on the medalins out there. Or even pulled mold of one and changed it in the lighter.

Marc,

There seems to be some confusion here among the ranks concerning your found medallion. Do tell, are the letters around the edge raised or indented? Is the C, S, P, B raised or indented? Is the cross raised or indented? Are the letters inside the cross raised or indented?

Inquiring minds want to know.

When i look at the picture of the medallion, i see the same raised and sunk areas as on the original, shadow in pics can indeed be quite tricky.

With some alterations to the medal i think i can make it even make it more accurate. It will be cheaper than the original plan, which was have them custom made.

Cheers,

Marc

Judging from the shadows, I too thought the same thing.
The outer circle is correct, while the inner circle (with the cross & the CSPB) is
inverted, or opposite of what the lighter is. What's sunk in on the lighter is raised
on the coin. I guess once you have the coin in your hand you'll be able to see if
this is true or not.

The real question is, if this is the case, can a mold expect keep the outer circle the
way it is, but invert the inner circle? (if that made sense)
:lol

I think it's the same -- you're just seeing the light highlight the carving marks on the raised cross.

Great find Marc. Is your plan to do a pull off it and modify? If you send me the link to the Web site you found that at, I'd be willing to buy one and do the modifications for you.

I indeed do plan on making a mold and make a new master of it, which then will be cast in metal and plated if possible. This coin i won on ebay, the guy only had 2 haven't seen this one anywhere else. The only difficult changes would be the large 'S' and the alteration of the 'V'.

I know Megatron is an experienced person in this area (weren't you a jeweler?, maybe he has some tips on how to do it.

cheers,

Marc

Upon closer inspection, I think it was the shading that was fooling me. if you start at the bottom of the cross, it seems like it's the way the original was. If without any alterations, if that's the way it is, I'm in. looks fine to me now,

The best bet is to make a mold and cast some wax patterns and change the wax patterns. You can cut and add as you like in the wax and this is also what they should cast in to metal. I wish I could do the changes for you but my tools are on the other side of the US from me. Not sure what your time line is. I could do it this fall. There are a few tools that will make it much easyer that I can point you to. One is a wax pen..you can add or take away wax with it ( its kinda like a low power soldering iron).
Nice find.

Stopped by my local Catholic shop (actually called "The Catholic Shop") and picked this up for 6 bucks (next to my little Benedictine medal):

It's a little under two inches in diameter.

the medal was not good and the more i look at the original the more i think it was custom made, so we'll go that route too.

I am waiting for Mike to get the last pieces of the graphics done so i can continue qorking on the prototype.

Mike, come in, Mike, any news on the graphics?
