COMPLETED -- Converting the FX toy X-Wing

Re: Converting the FX toy X-Wing into a display piece

Whew! Much happier to see pics of cut-up plastic, and not sliced open flesh. :wacko

Re: Converting the FX toy X-Wing into a display piece

Yeah, this is a great thread PHArchivist and thanks so much for sharing it.

I’m on the bandwagon on this too. I took a chance and bought the Dagobah edition a few weeks ago and it’s dimensions are pretty cool overall coming in at about 50cm, so with a little tweaking here and there I’m hoping it can be my first SS foray. :)
I know it won't be as hot and accurate as yours but that's okay. So far had a bash at the laser cannons and now moved onto the inner wings.

Was wondering what to do with the filled in canopy rear, its pretty blocked with the plastic and screw tubes. Now after seeing all the Dr. Frankenstein stuff, maybe I should give that bit a miss…Seat belt noted and please be careful out there.

Thank you

Welcome, Rider, and glad to see you're "in" on this project...

I'm home from work today, so I'll try to post some pics of my more recent progress in the next few hours, plus a little more detail.

Re: Converting the FX toy X-Wing into a display piece

Thank you so very much PHArchivist, and its a true honor to be here. Hope you have a great day with your progress. :)

Rob, this is a butt-load of work... but I think it's gonna shine when you're done. No one will ever know it was once a toy.

It's a good thing you didn't pick an original Kenner X to accurize!!!!!!(y)lol

Re: Converting the FX toy X-Wing into a display piece

Do you think that you will be making a conversion kit to be sold???? :)

Re: Converting the FX toy X-Wing into a display piece

:lol:lol:lol

I may have thought of that when I was 12!

I did think of that at 12!!! Haven't thought of it since. In fact, I drew up plans back then for an X to scale with the Kenner pilot figure. All I know is that at about 1:18, it was gonna be HUGE! I was going to make the fuselage out of a solid hunk of wood sanded to shape on a belt sander. Ah... the dreams and naivete of youth....LOL!!!!

Re: Converting the FX toy X-Wing into a display piece

That's looking really great PHArchivist

I was thinking of using the Revell R2 aswell. What's your verdict on that so far, good look/scale?

I love your work on the laser cannons. Other than the front bit, I left mine as is. But I used a car wheel for the intakes/grill. Although not accurate, it's pretty effective, plus, it saved me from having to make a cover for the rim as its part of the wheel.

I do have some random parts available - nose cones, engine cans.... But my casting skills are not stellar; they'll take some work.

Thanks! The Revell R2 is perfect in size and quality. Better than CC, better than Icons.

Re: Converting the FX toy X-Wing into a display piece

if you bought the cockpit set it has an R2 in it, (actually it has your choice of an R2 or an R5 unit)
that is very good quality wise, and scale wise as well (and the seams are invisible so no chance of sanding off details!)

I got both the revell and the cockpit set, and opted for the one that came with the cockpit set

Do you have pics to compare (I've not seen the "cockpit set")...

Spent most of today laying the base for the R2 strip. Just about there.

Re: Converting the FX toy X-Wing into a display piece

side by side pics and a pic of the cockpit tub... it's just sitting underneath the top fuselage piece, the gaps on the side are non existant when it's actually in place... but it does show how nicely it fits in
the cockpit is nice, the R2 unit is a huge bonus...

seeing as the Jedi SF R2 has that damned seam that runs right down the middle, and that the line up of the panels isn't the best, I think you can see what an improvement the cockpit set R2 is

FYI, this is the cockpit set that is a replacement for the CC-X
got it from SSM

Re: Converting the FX toy X-Wing into a display piece

FYI- Anyone need one of those cockpit sets? I don't need mine(I thought it came with a pilot) so it's up for sale at $34 Paypal

BTW, if anyone could spare their CC/Salzo Pilot(or a casting of it) drop me a line!

Re: Converting the FX toy X-Wing into a display piece

Tony, your Revell R2 has the seam running vertically. Mine is horizontal (not down the center of his face). That may be why I'm happier with it than you are with yours.

Re: Converting the FX toy X-Wing into a display piece

That would most definitely make a difference... but it's not just the seam, it's the fact that the details don't line up
