Now i see the other pics, the markings and peppering on the wings is exceptionally well done. Love it!

Re: Converting the FX toy X-Wing into a display piece

Thanks all! It's been fun weathering this.

What are your honest thoughts on the greenish grey on either side of the R2 strip? It is thinned Light Sea Grey, gone over with black pastel powder.

I do see this in one of the main ref pics, but am not sure if I really like it, or really hate it...

Re: Converting the FX toy X-Wing into a display piece

In this image you can see what appears to be green/grey on the flat areas on either side of the R2 strip.

In fact, you can even see where just to the right of the R2 socket, there is some much more clean white areas. And on the right rear, it appears as if the green/grey stops 90% of the way back

Or I am daffy and don't know how to read ref pics... :wacko

Re: Converting the FX toy X-Wing into a display piece

Well Im not sure they used any green paints, I dont see it green on my screen, but that area looks good on your X-Wing (at least on my screen).

Re: Converting the FX toy X-Wing into a display piece

Yes Julien, the color I used is called Light Sea Grey, which is predominantly grey, with subtly toes of green, but very subtle...

Re: Converting the FX toy X-Wing into a display piece

Given the dearth of decent reference pictures, the only people who can answer with any sort of authority are those who claim to have seen the original (or whatever is left of it) in person. For what it's worth, though, Red 3 definitely has green areas, so it's entirely plausible that Red 5 would, too.

Your re-creation of the Red 5 paint job is outstanding!

Re: Converting the FX toy X-Wing into a display piece

I'm flattered by some of the compliments from some of the "heavy hitters" here on the Studio Scale forum. Thank you, guys!

Well... For my 40th birthday today, I figured I'd give my self a studio scal X-Wing!

I basically finished it tonight. Only thing left is the final steel wool rub down (can't wait to see the results of that!), and complete the occupants.

Then it's a matter of figuring out how to best photograph this thing. Kurt...?

For now, here's a teaser!

:lol

I'll try to do a quality photo shoot today or tomorrow. Biggest challenge with photographing it is that I do not have a stand or mounting method yet! :confused

Re: Converting the FX toy X-Wing into a display piece

Great work. I really like that FX toy. I had one and even out of the box from a distance it looked really cool. You have done a real good job on it.
Makes me want to try it.

Re: Converting the FX toy X-Wing into a display piece

PHArchivist,

Did you keep the original handle that came with the toy? Did you fill in the holes that the handle attaches to on the bottom of the x-wing?

If not, then you can attach the handle to the x-wing, and put it inside a black pvc or metal pipe. Then connect the pipe to a base. In the pic below I think the guy cut a hollow lamp base and stuck his x-wing in.

(this is not my x-wing, i dont remember where I got it, if it is someone here, I'm sorry that I stole your pic.. but it's for a good cause)

or you can do what I did, and hang it up from the ceiling..

of course you could always use a regular panavise mount for it like most people do for their x-wings.

Either way.. the FX looks amazing. Looking forward to seeing the pics.

Re: Converting the FX toy X-Wing into a display piece

Everything related to the toy is now gone. So I'll have to devise my own mounting methed.

Re: Converting the FX toy X-Wing into a display piece

Actually the top pic I believe belonged to a formerly quite active member from Hong Kong but I can't recall his name. He had a killer full sized Vader figure.

Congratulations on a find looking conversion..

PS. Sorry I made an error. the pick was posted by Bryancd not by PHArchist. OK now to wait for the real finished
pic. Did not mean to jump the gun.
