Comic Con 2013

Re: SDCC 2013 - first-timer

Just so I can plan ahead, and I'm sure others will be in line to Volunteer, what types of tickets are prices do they regularly have? What were the tickets going for this year?

Re: SDCC 2013 - first-timer

I attended the 2012 Comic-con and took my 5 y.o. daughter and wife. My daughter was dressed as princess Leia and had a great time. People were asking to take photos of her all day! She was a bit overwhelmed as it does get very crowded almost to a point of shoulder to shoulder in some areas. There are places for kids to take a break and do kid stuff (Lego area and coloring spots). We live in San Diego so it was easy to commute and we did not have to get a hotel room which is very nice. I can tell you that the San Diego Trolley drops you off right in front of the convention center and is a great way to get around San Diego. If you head inland by about 15 minutes hotel prices should drop significantly Vs the downtown rates which will usually gouge you at that time. I will probably get a downtown room and a 4 day pass for 2013 so I can continue checking everything out and my wife and kids can take breaks and head back to the room. Its very kid friendly in my opinion. Good luck!

Ballpark for tickets I think was $35 a day. There are other hotels that aren't as expensive as what Grendel369 paid. A friend stayed at a Best Western nearby for $150 a night (he didn't have any cool stories about celebs for his $150 a night). I live an hour away, so I just drove down.

This was my first Comic-Con, and my first time volunteering. Short run-down of what to expect. First thing to know is that you only volunteer for 3 hours, the rest of the time is yours to do what you like with. More on that later.

The email said to be there around 8 am (if memory serves). I got there an hour early to find parking and such. Went to the door, only to find the volunteer line was a mile long. Went to the back of the line. Someone came walking up and down the line asking first for people that were there for 7:30 volunteering. Then he came by a little while later and asked for people that didn't have assignments yet - that was me. In I went past the throngs of people. Got my assignment for 2pm. I was free to play from that time on until 2. A wrangler came and got all of us going to the same place, and we were told what to do. 5pm I'm done and free to do as I like until the doors hit me on the ass on the way out.

I mention volunteering because it was the only way for me to get in. They accepted me as a volunteer sometime (lets say) March. Volunteering is now closed. April (ish) comes along and tickets go on sale. I wasn't able to get a ticket (I was on time online), but I could still go as I was already accepted as a volunteer. It's a nice fallback if you can't get a ticket.

Re: San Diego Comic Con 2013!!!

Thank you Darkpope for the info. I have seen some job listings at Craigslist last year for helping with Comic Con. Only reason why I didn't apply is because they were looking for females, a far distant from what I am, lol. As far as volunteering, does this mean I can still dress up in my cosplay?

The Craigslist ads are a) exhibitors looking for booth babes, or b) pervs looking for ladies to model for them under false pretenses.

Real volunteers for Comic-Con sign up through Comic-Con, not through Craigslist.

As far as cosplay, it really depends - in general they will let you wear a costume while you volunteers, but if it's a very obtrusive costume - for example, some anime character with oversized props attached to the costume - they'll make you take it off or refuse you as a volunteer. You have to be able to carry out actual job duties. Dressing as anything that may prevent you from being able to do useful things is a dealbreaker.

Re: SDCC 2013 - first-timer

Got my two 4 day passes. Even though we live in sd were gonna get a room downtown. Comic con is so worth it!

Re: SDCC 2013 - first-timer

How are you guys getting tickets if this will be your first year going?
New members have to wait until early 2013 to book the tickets. Members who attended Comic Con 2012 only got the option to apply for preregistration.

Anybody who recently created their member id will get the following message if they log in.

"We're sorry, you are not eligible to participate in the 2013 online badge preregistration and will need to wait until our open online badge registration to be held sometime in early 2013."

March 2013 is my guess for the open online registration.

Attending this year was no guarantee. My son and my brother were both in the waiting room this morning when the con sold out.

Re: SDCC 2013 - first-timer

I think some time in early 2013 it will reopen up for sale. Glad the prices are posted! Planning on going this year, starting to save now!

Re: SDCC 2013 - first-timer

Is it that the pre-registration tickets sold out or the entire con? I find it hard to believe they wouldn't leave some till 2013 for everyone else.

I fin it rediculous that they open pre-reg for people that only went in 2012 and those that have attended multiple times before that and missed a year cannot purchase tickets. It's gotten so commercialized that many people just go there because it's comic-con and not because they're fans. Really sad.

That is only a specific percentage of the tickets work that way from what I can tell. There will be another run of sales for those who did not go to SDCC in 2012 coming early 2013. DO NOT FRET :D

Since I'm reading that tickets for 2013 are sold out, will I still be able to at least Volunteer? And can I Volunteer all days or just certain days?

I just registered before it closed. Yes, I am a new guy and hope to be able to go next year.

As I stated above, they are not all sold out, Just the first run of them for people who went last year. As long as you are signed up, you will get an email telling you a few days in advance when the tickets will go onsale again for the 2013 SDCC. Do not fret, just sit by your email box and await the email on a date when they will go onsale.

Thanks Vivek. It's so confusing how they do this. It's all "preregistration this" and "you can not buy tickets until....that" :lol

It's a bummer for me if they don't open this till March, I was hoping to be in my first Comic Con, and traveling from Germany to USA can be already a heck of pain in March :(
