Limited Run CLOSED: Kylo Ren CNC aluminium ultra accurate Saber

Re: Kylo Ren CNC aluminium ultra accurate Saber

No worries, delays are fine by me if it means making it right. Can anyone point me to the 3d files please? I've looked on the Knights of Ren facebook group but couldn't see them, I'd like to see how it all fits together and decide how I'm going to do the install.

Most of the parts are no longer loaded on Shapeways. Could someone provide the files so we can download and have the parts we need printed?

Re: Kylo Ren CNC aluminium ultra accurate Saber

If I have EU people who want paint jobs, since they will be sent to AFX at the same time, he can ship me directly the finished hilts at the same time. Yours can be shipped as well for installation then back after it's done.

This would be awesome. I would like to do this if possible. Keep up the good work!

I'm sure you have already considered all of this but will these tight tolerances be effected by the painting process? Then maybe become too tight?

The only parts you will "need" to print on your own are the 3 plugs. guabe; has also created a kill key for this you could print if it suited your fancy and fits into your build.

I will be obtaining and sending these files to everyone in a soon to come email update once I have the prototype set and all the installers/painter sorted out.

We are not taking paint into account in the tolerances. You shouldn't be painting the hidden joining surfaces (my opinion) anyways. If we did, anyone who had their saber only chemically weathered and then small things here and there would end up with a saber that rattled and was too loose. The Saber comes apart in the middle just below the emitter cutout area, and at the 2 quillion. The middle is threaded, so no paint there, and the quillion slide in, so no paint on that surface either.

I was thinking of hard anodizing it. Then heat anodize the quillons.

Then weather in general

That makes sense. I guess if someone was really picky it could be anodized first before painting. But I'm sure if it's hidden like you said it won't make a difference. I was just curious.

This thread makes my day(s). Love coming in here seeing updates and inching closer to a final product.

I'm thinking of casting a run for you guys. So long as Derek doesn't have other plans. Just making sure prototypes here are good and production starts before i spend my time stressing over the details of it .

Nope, no plans to offer a cast version in the moment. Having one of these alu versions in hand would lend itself really well to making a belt hanger or display piece in resin.

I'll probably mold it one day and offer it, but not at the moment, and there is always room for more than one guy.

Or if you mean casting the 3 plugs, thats a great idea as well. :d

Yea were just talking blade plugs and what ever other random pc thats useful.

Re: Kylo Ren CNC aluminium ultra accurate Saber

SO glad I got in on this run... You guys should teach a course on how to do diy empty hilt runs. And koodos to whoever's doing the machine work. The amount of detail needed and the time it takes.... I'm amazed they are doing such a small run for so cheap. I'm saying it already.... make more hilts guys. This combination of talent is just amazing. Be proud, there are few out there doing this kind of work.

Re: Kylo Ren CNC aluminium ultra accurate Saber

Hopefully this will Tide u guys over :) The main BOdy Enjoy!

Just want to note that there will be more detail on the production pc some of the details were polished away and were going to set them deeper!

Holy freaking Schmoly. I'm drooling. We are not worthy.

This is is why good things are worth waitin for. They end up like that. I definitely don't regret getting in on this run.

credit for the design goes to @guabe; he is the mastermind behind the piece.

Scott and I are tweaking things here and there to better align the tolerances to a machined piece vs a printed piece. But can't take credit for the long and hard road or designing the thing itself.

Re: Kylo Ren CNC aluminium ultra accurate Saber

Will the shop be able to sharpen up the edges in the areas where parts are meant to look separate? Is that what you were talking about when you said they need to use a smaller bit?

Yes this part was polished and found that the details were too shallow and were polished out, which removes lines that are supposed to look like different parts. this is why we pushed the prototype, and picked one near where Scott lived.. would have really been a gut punch if I got these from a distant machinist and all these problems were there.

Re: Kylo Ren CNC aluminium ultra accurate Saber

Looking forward to getting mine when they are done. It is going to be fun to install my Igniter 2 into this!

Naigon, I literally have one of your Igniter 2's labeled "Kylo Ren crossguard". Now, I saw on IRA that you were showing your Spark 2 being set up to ignite the quillions with a delay. Am I fair to assume that your Igniter 2 is also capable of this?

Yes all my boards support the cross-saber functionality, where you can have one blade and two quillions light in delay, no additional hardware needed.

Spark Color 2 and Igniter 2 also support X-Saber, which allows RGB mixing with delayed side ignition, using the XDrive module. It is a bit more wiring but is pretty sweet. Here's a video of the SF Relic I did with that functionality, it came out really nice. I'm sure it is really going to be awesome in this hilt:

Re: Kylo Ren CNC aluminium ultra accurate Saber

Ok guys decent update for you all.

First off were still working on the fitment of all the parts (minor stuff will just take time) But in the mean time i scored a few parts that the machinist literally was gonna throw in the garbage! I was literally never supposed to see these parts!

Me and my partner went to town with the dremel and managed to get the Parts together. This is a very rough fit these are not final fitments the production pc will be much cleaner but as u can see as if even with throw away parts we have a good looking pc here!

Please do not judge this Hilt a bunch of the parts are not even proto type worthy!

The picture is throwing off the size of exhaust ports they are very slim not huge as it kinda seems lol.

Re: Kylo Ren CNC aluminium ultra accurate Saber

This looks fantastic even at this stage. I am really looking forward to this and am very happy that I got in on this run :)
