Limited Run CLOSED: Kylo Ren CNC aluminium ultra accurate Saber

Re: Kylo Ren CNC aluminium ultra accurate Saber

It is a cheaper way to go if you have the equipment and know how, but you do lose a lot of the high fidelity details that machining each one gives you. Not that cast peices are bad but defiantly not on the same level as a machined part.

Re: Kylo Ren CNC aluminium ultra accurate Saber

So, probably too late to pitch this idea, but what about making one high-quality CNC-cut master, then making casts of it out of aluminum/steel? A run of aluminum/steel cast hilts might be cheaper than all CNC-cut ones...

A good bit of the cost of machining is getting everything set up for machining. Machining one will still be very costly

Kev has this spot on. The programming, tooling and jigs to produce this are where a lot of the start up costs are going. Now over all it would be cheaper so machine then cast, but as medic said, you lose some of the details, or they get softer. Now this might not be a big deal, but I think that it would not drop the price to a point where people would be satisfied.

Korbanth was able to get a great price on his hilt for the fact that he ordered 100+, hilts, plus the graflex sabers, and Parks and him do saber business with the machine shop a lot, so is able to command lower prices vs me just trying to do a small run.

I've got 25 people interested in this run at the current price and since I'm not in it to make any $ or even get a free saber (I'm paying full price) I'm satisfied.

The people in on this understand the costs of machining a saber of this detail and that the pricing is right where it needs to be. Of course cheaper is easier on the pocketbook and gets more people involved.

I do have a couple last minute spots open. The list is full but as of the 3rd (Wednesday) I will potentially open a couple of new slots from people who have not put down the deposit yet. So there is still a chance to get in on the order if you're ready to deposit.

Re: Kylo Ren CNC aluminium ultra accurate Saber

Ok, starting tomorrow I potentially have 5 spots open on this run. These are the folks who signed up but haven't responded recently for deposits. So if you wanted in, sign up on the list now to be the first to get the open slots that pop up tomorrow.
Due to Chinese New Year, the machine shop won't start work on this until Feb 14th. I'm collecting deposits right now and holding them in until I get all 25 paid deposits to send to them on the 14th. About a week later they will ship me 1 of the 25 sabers to ensure everything is as expected and then 45 days or so after this they will be mailed to me for distribution. This will move fast and you'll have the sabers in a hurry.

Also for those with a mind for installations, Gustavo is working with Saber Projekt here in Germany to tweak the internal design to aid in wiring these sabers up. They will also be providing installation services to anyone on the list who is up for it. The price right now is undetermined as the prototype is not in hand. As a rough estimate it would cost anywhere from 300-500 Euros for the install based on what options and board you end up with. They will only be working with cards that support the delayed ignition (trident or similar) so that the saber functions like it should!

I'm starting my run of Kylo Hilts. there will only be 25 hilts made.

The files to start this originated from the amazing files created by Guabe (Gustavo) http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=238451 and are his most accurate and really amazingly detailed.

The model is made with inserting electronics in mind. The blade will be accepting the standard 1in blade for the main and 3/4 in blades for the quillion which are pretty common and easy to source. I will help to provide sources for these.

Renders of the model that were sent to the machinist.

The price is a doozie @ 690 Euros with a hybrid of CNC parts and resin parts. All of the structural and core components are CNC aluminium. So the pommel, the grip, the emitter, the 2 quillion, the blade sleeve, and the switch plate will be CNC. This represents the core of the saber, and basically every single part you will touch. The saber will be fully duel ready and strong like bull.

The resin parts will be the detail parts. Parts you're not going to touch on a normal basis and printing also lets us get a very fine level of detail on the parts like the cutout on the top and the exposed core at the bottom.

If you are in, fill out the form below and I will contact you right away to pay a 50% deposit to pay the machinist to start production. Production starts 14 Feb, so this is the last chance to get in. The final 50% when the machining is done and shipping to me for distribution.

The production time is 45 days, starting 14 Feb.

Re: Kylo Ren CNC aluminium ultra accurate Saber

Just sent my deposit. Sorry I missed the emails, I was sick with the flu for the past week or so.

Re: Kylo Ren CNC aluminium ultra accurate Saber

I would DEFINITELY be interested in a saber installation. That would save on multiple shipping charges for me and save me some hassle. Please please let me know about the installation services when they are available. Thanks!

Re: Kylo Ren CNC aluminium ultra accurate Saber

Any chance of getting the electronics un installed, in a kit form? I enjoy doing the wiring, but I'm not a fan of all of the tracking down components.

Re: Kylo Ren CNC aluminium ultra accurate Saber

It might be a possibility, I don't see why not. My installer in Germany runs a webshop http://www.saberproject.de/en/ so I'm sure he would sell you an installation package once he has the first hilt and can know 100% what parts are needed. It's better to buy the blades and charger in your location though to save on shipping costs and make sure you get the right voltage/plug on your charger.

Re: Kylo Ren CNC aluminium ultra accurate Saber

Any updates on the run?

Yes, and no at the same time.

The run is still on, but I've engaged several other machinists to find a lower price. I'm very close to sealing the deal with 1 of 2 machinists and the price is much lower vs my original quotes.

Once I have final pricing I will likely re open the run and I'm pretty sure it will be much more reasonable, for a saber of the same quality.

Re: Kylo Ren CNC aluminium ultra accurate Saber

Anyone following this. this run is back in action at a brand new price point.

Please see post 1, or ready here.

This is the purchase list for the Kylo Ren Light saber based on a fan sculpt. The model was created by Gustavo who has put his blood sweat and tears into this model.

The final pricing for the blank saber (full details but no electronics).

Saber: $450

All parts are CNC machined with the exception of 3 pieces. The Emitter cutout, the exposed core at the bottom and the end cap. These 3 parts will be pressure cast in a strong but impact resistant resin.

The parts that are not included but the STL files are available for you to print your own are the 3 blade plugs, the chassis and the kill key (for those who will use one).

The entire structure and every part that you will touch regularly is CNC aluminium, and a few detail parts are resin. Everything that gives the saber it's structural integrity to allow for a weighty hilt you can smash against other sabers is made from aluminium and will hold up to heavy dueling.

The run is already in progress and the prototype is in production. Expected completion by the machinist is 3 weeks from now.

Shipping is separate to this cost and will need to be better defined over the next week.

Hilts going to anywhere in the world except Europe will ship from Canada.

Hilts that will deliver to Europe will ship from Germany.

Pricing for European buyers will look like this:
Germany: 6Euro tracked, insured
Europe: 16Euro tracked, insured

When you sign up on this list please be ready to pay a 50% deposit ($225) and the remaining 50% once the machined sabers are finished machining and will be picked up for distribution to you. Refunds will only be possible when I find someone to take your spot in the run since the funds will be going directly to the machinist to start production.

Again... do NOT sign up unless you are ready to deposit and order.

After you sign up you will be contacted via email within 48 hours for deposit payments. Please be sure to add dday@phoenixprops.net to the safe senders list so it doesn't go into the spam box. If you have signed up and not heard from me within the 48 hours time, please send me an email at the above listed email.
