Cassian Andor (Andor Series) Blaster (MW-20 Bryar Pistol)

Yeah, those look great, chubs!

So, after lots of primer and LOTS of sanding I was able to lay down a few coats of paint today. Ran out after 2, so I’m gonna need another can of “copper”. I could prob get by, as it’s mostly getting covered up with layers to brown, but just to be in the safe side…

Laying down some paints today. Will be using all Tamiya rattle cans. Should have just bought an airbrush, but….let’s see how it goes.

Wanted to start with just a single piece in case things don’t go to plan. I tell ya, that copper looks SO go I almost hate to tarnish it up!

Anyway, here’s a single light coat of brown over the copper. Next up is a light coat of maroon.

Edit: and mix the maroon lol. BAD cap representation on the color. I was thinking it would be more brownish, but you can see on my test that it’s almost the same color purple as the Raisin Bran box. That’s not what we’re looking for.

Well, it’s definitely gonna need something to match that hue. I don’t even know what to call that color! It’s gonna get a black wash at some point and polishing compound to get nice and shiny, but it still needs a coat of something close to whatever they used. My piece looks like an old penny, I think, but definitely not like the prop.

Whatya guys think? Any suggestions? Maybe just a thin layer of a darker brown or black (I don’t think black is the right choice) over this then wet sand to blend it all together then polish? If you look closely on the prop there’s some slight green in the cracks there, too. They really got the look of tarnished copper down.

I think it’s gloss black on the main frame. Not really sure where you are seeing these brown reddish colors other than the top ridged area That probably match the grips. Maybe you are just picking up on the areas where the black layer is still intact but just starting to let the copper underneath come through. I also think the black on the rotating barrel and the trigger is more of a satin or matte black finish.

Copper doesn’t tarnish black… Looks to me like they totally went with the natural tarnish process. Like I mentioned, there’s even a bit of green in the cracks there. It’s an amazing paint job, really, if you look closely at it. I wish I had a better pic than that cap from the video.

Im not saying I see “red” per se. I’m just seeing a REALLY dark brown/burgundy which is exactly as you say, a SLIGHT amount of copper coming through. Honestly, had the maroon I bought matched the cap color more closely, a thin layer of that over the brown followed by a black wash would have been perfect.

Oh well. I’ll keep at it. In any event it’ll look more accurate than the ones people just painted gunmetal/black.

You are making an assumption that the copper of the prop is real copper. It could simply be faux metallic underneath like you are trying to do now. And even if it is real metal, how do you know it’s not bronze or tarnished brass?

And honestly, I think the tarnish you are seeing is just black paint that has been made to look so warn that you see the metal underneath. There is some places the black is still intact, some worn thin, some chipped away, and some warn completely away.

I don’t think it’s real copper! What made you assume that? They did precisely what I’m doing, no doubt. Difference being they’re professionals and I’ve never done this before in my life lol.

I’m just gonna get a REALLY dark brown for the top coat and continue as planned above.

I'm also gonna (eventually) go for a super dark brown as a topcoat. It's definitely not a simple black as far as I can see, there's too much occurance of a brownish colour under all the lighting conditions you can see the OG prop under.

I wonder how a transparent black would look over the nice copper paint you used? Might allow some of the copper tone through while still giving a mostly gloss black appearance.

So glad to have found this thread! Just ordered my kit and have been staring at freeze frames of the show for weeks trying to think of how to tackle it. Keep at it Edged! I'm super curious how you progress

Still working in this, guys. Thanks for the encouragement. Just been busy with other stuff for the last few weeks. I think in the end, while I’m hopeful it will turn out ok, I probably wasted a lot of time and effort (and money on expensive paint) by doing the copper undercoat. I likely could have achieved the very same effect just doing it in black/dark brown and dry brushing the exposed areas with copper instead. We’ll see.

That being said, it looks like we’re gonna need a conversion kit. Better open up those files and fire up those printers, boys. Cass got himself an upgrade!

I can’t wait to hear the back story on this. Where was Cassian keeping this extension the entire time? It started out as Clem’s gun, so perhaps it was always on Ferrix and he picked it up before boarding Luthien’s ship? In any event it’s pretty damn cool seeing the Bryar as a rifle.

That’s cool. Where did this pic come from? New trailer for season two I’m not aware of?? Don’t remember this from season one.

Yeah, they showed a quick trailer for S2 at Celebration Europe. It hasn’t been officially released yet, but there’s a leaked copy online. Looks pretty awesome and they’re still filming till August. I’m surprised they even put together something for the event.

Awesome! That’s an even lighter brown than I thought! Maybe my original test piece above is close enough after all. It just needs a dark wash over top and it’ll look pretty close to that. Thanks for posting!

I was inspired to just do the rest of the pieces. I think I mostly held off cause I was afraid of messing up after all that work, but I told myself I wouldn’t do this time.

I went light in certain areas and left the copper come through. Maybe it’s not exact, but that looks like pitted metal to me. I’m okay with it.

Gonna get some burnt umber oil paint and thin it down with enamel thinner, brush it over the surface, let it sit for a few mins then wipe it off. That should lift some of brown coat up and leave a darker wash behind as well.

That looks so much like an old piece of metal that's been dulled through handling. Very well done, in my opinion!
