There's a big difference between a "cut down rifle" and a weapon that's as modular as LEGO. Now granted, I haven't paid attention to Dark Forces this century, but my vague memory is that in the game, the Bryar was meant more as a "Space Obrez" - something that used to be a rifle but now that Bubba's taken a hacksaw to it, it's an overpowered pistol.
Whereas the A280-CFE is more "What if the video game version of the Stoner system actually worked?" And that's fine for one weapon in the setting, but when every single sidearm is suddenly a broken down longarm and perfectly usable in both configurations, it stops being special and just feels twinky.
