Captain Phasma - Episode VII

I get the impression she is not going to be a rank-and-file Trooper. Maybe a mercenary or a fanatic, but not someone who climbed up the ladder.

I doubt she will be a Sith. I don't think the "rule of two" is in play anymore. Remember, the game has changed.

Lord willing. It was a stupid rule.

not to get too OT, but I assumed the reason there were only two - a master and an apprentice - is that the apprentice's desire for power would eventually force them to overthrow their master, and the new master would get an apprentice to continue the cycle. In this way, the Sith would get evermore powerful (kind of like natural selection)

Are people actually saying that chrome armour is a good idea, or are they just annoyed that someone pointed out that it's not?

I'm not annoyed, I just think a lot of people do not understand how disruptive camouflage works... ;) The entire point of crypsis (disruptive camouflage patterning) is to break up your outline using a sharply contrasting pattern. This is why modern digital camouflage is comprised of sharp chunky pixels (which really look nothing like anything in nature) instead of blobby shapes like the old-school camo of the Cold War. It's why leopards and cheetahs are spotted, but are still hard to see in the mostly vertical tall grass. To most people, crypsis seems counter-productive because you're relying on high contrast to disrupt your outline, so it looks conspicuous at first. But the irregularity and contrast actually distracts your eye and draws your attention AWAY from the shape that bears the pattern. Here's a few examples:

Anyway, my larger takeaway is that various organizations (including the U.S. military) have experimented with mirrored camouflage previously. Reflecting your surroundings actually works much better than you'd think...

The whole "chrome armor" thing is a lot more practical than most people probably think... Probably the main reason our military doesn't use it on our vehicles is because it is prohibitively expensive to field and maintain, but I assume that in a galaxy a long, long time ago, far, far away their level of technology may have managed to make it more feasible. I suppose we will find out this December! :)

Lord willing. It was a stupid rule.

Tell that to Darth Bane... ;) You have to understand the rule was a necessary evil (pun unintended) at the time it was conceived. But, just like a lot of the Jedi Order's traditions, it eventually was more of a hindrance to advancement than a benefit.

I don't actually disagree with you on the benefits of reflecting your environment. I think the biggest issue with chrome would be controlling the reflectivity of it. One stray glint from the sun and people will know that something is there, and investigate.

That is very true! However, disruptive camouflage (at least in military applications) is not designed to hide you, its mostly there to break up your outline/silhouette so that you are harder to hit with projectiles at distance. Seeing Captain Phasma should be fairly easy, especially when she moves. Figuring out where her arm ends and the rock she is crouching behind begins is the hard part. Like any other optical illusion, it confuses your eyes a lot more than you'd think. :)

You can actually see a bit of this effect in the trailer as she walks down the hallway-- imagine trying to shoot at that from 50 yards away.

as long as its not a trooper firing or theres no chance ^^ haha

do you know of any free foam files for this armor(or ep7 stormtroopers assuming they're the same) I've got the helmet and i'd love to do this character by the time the movie hits theaters

I think "every single detail" is overselling it. Maybe there's something weird going on with the angle of the shots, but the front chin area looks way off to me.

Yes not only is it not accurate at all but that guy is a recaster scumbag. He been banned from almost every site on the internet including ebay, all he has left is etsy.
Hes ripped off countless artists don't give him any support.

Well I didn't say gloss white was any better...:lol

Are people actually saying that chrome armour is a good idea, or are they just annoyed that someone pointed out that it's not?

I thought it was impractical because its gotta be a B....pain to keep clean. Although so does the white. With this your going to get so many finger prints on it just putting it on, some one will have to buff you after for it to look nice again.

Hello all! Here are the photos I took of Phasma from D23.

I tried to get every single angle. Even got yelled at for touching her cape.

In person the cape looks like Tarpish/leather and when you touch it, it feels like plastic coated Canvas. Its COVERED in Plasticy Paint,

The shape of the cape is VERY unique. Its got an odd section where it tapers upwards. I tried to get a good shot of it for you guys.

The sucky part about the back is that its sooo high up you cant get a photo. its like 12 feet off the ground by the time you go around the to back because shes standing on stairs. I tried to get what i could but i sucked and getting good back shots. the light was not reacting well with the back.

Well without further ado. ENJOY!!
