Can it be done? - Vader ROTJ saber WIP

Here are the templates I have--as always if they need to be taken down or their creator wishes to post them I'll take them down.

WOW! Its been a while since we've talked and I built my saber with your help. Good to see this resurrected! :)

For you aspiring builders, Dave nailed it. This is all you need as far as templates go.

Fitting parts together is an entirely different matter. I can't even begin to tell you the various configurations I've come up with to create or convert this saber. I can honestly say that no two sabers I've ever made are alike!

Dave - very cool on the control box! I can't believe I spotted that, but I had it for so many years, it wasn't that hard with a good pic. You may want to know that Wayne (PropReplicator, RIP) is the one who cast that and gave to me. It's a special piece.

Your Graflex is coming along nicely, but I would love to know what you plan on doing about the difficult parts - particularly the clamp, red button, glass eye, and ears. I have a template for making the ears and clamp, but I've never understood it.
Do you have a shoulder puller? You must, since they're raised. I bet it was tough as hell doing it with stainless.

Brian! Hey man, how are you? Yes indeed, that's the one you remember. (I have a couple of others that need finishing, as well!)

Brinn - very cool to hear! Post up some pics if you can! :)

Dann - that's indeed a rare commodity. I started a thread 6 years ago to see who else had shoulder pullers besides myself, and I think 3 people replied. It's too bad Jim Honeck isn't around anymore to make more.

I'm plinking around right now with my brand new Dremel. I don't have any new pics to put up yet, but it won't be long.

I am also thinking about building a few complete sabers to sell, if anyone is interested. I also may put together some kits, but first I'll have to order a new Smooth-On kit.

Let the old times roll....... :thumbsup

David helped me with my kit. Lots of respect for this saber. :love

Seeing all metal parts, makes me want to weep.

Happy 4rth Bud,
Mike

Here are some much better pics of the exact saber I'm working with:

And hey, here's a blast from the past for the sake of it! ;)

Great to have you back David and I see your saber skills haven't suffered at all during your hiatus! :cool

I'm really excited to see a resurgance in Vader sabers!

David, do you have exact dimensions on the nylon pipe you use?

Rich

Holy crap, I can't believe it's still up. I may as well retitle this thread to "Vader ROTJ Saber Research Part II."

Well done, Caymen!!! That tutorial is still priceless, even though some of the dimensions have changed. It's what I used when I started, and I still have a complete copy of it printed out. Bravo! :thumbsup

Thanks--I've never seen the grip one before!

Hey, found the other stuff about making hardware parts from WadaYado: Darth Vader's ROTJ Lightsaber Tutorial: Main Page

Rich - the nylon stock insert I have been using is very, very rare. I'm not even sure if I can get my hands on any more of it. I have 4 feet of it left from a 5-foot section. The exact dimensions? Not sure, but it fits EXACTLY inside a 1.5" OD tube. 1 3/8" is my best guess.

Kev - great to see you too!

Wow, the return on the Vader ROTJ saber.

I remember building this saber some time ago. The most fun I have ever had on a saber project. THe best part was the weathering process!

Great work David!

THere's a quick solution if you cant find a nylon tube to fit inside the metal stube.

FInd a nylon tube 1.5 diameter (I believe these are still pretty common in hartdware stores), then use a dremmel to cut a small lenthwise strip out of the nylon tube (maybe an 8th of an inch??).
After the strip is removed, just squeeze the tube together and slide it inside the metal graflex tube.
Make sure the section with the removed strip is no visible .

DS,

Very nice, indeed!

It seems there used to be many different kits and each had a different shroud piece and control box.

Perhaps now is the time to make the ultimate accurate Lucasfilm Archive/MOM KIT ???
For all of us who would love to create this lightsaber from leftover graflex flashguns.

I built one a couple of years ago and it was my favorite of all that I built. Wouldnt mind another go around with more acurate parts,
