Building the Sandcrawler

Well, it's about the same size as the 1/16 sherman wheel. Could it be a wheel of a large kit? Nothing clear idea comes to mind. You would probably know if it was from a large tank, since you seem to have most of the large kits.

Thank you for your reply :) Scott.

I've checked it in my kits but couldn't find...
Actually, I thought I'd find the right kit in the attached pic which was quoted from Jasons's forum. (Hasegawa 1/32 Lockheed F-104C)

Although it is smilart to the original part, it is not exactly matched.

thanks Eric.

If this model was built after filming to match the full-size set piece, then this detail would have been made from scratch. The reason is it would have to be made to match what is seen on screen in the sequence where R2 is sucked into the chute. If that is the case, then this would not be a kit part at all. (?)

Thank you very much for your reply. Charles :)

Actually, I'm wondering whether the scaled studio model is made after full-size shot for filming?

Can you please confirm this?

thanks Eric.

I'm not really sure. IIRC, filming started in Tunisia first while ILM was still in the process of being set up. As a result, I'm guessing the full-size set piece was built before the miniature, but of course I could be wrong. I'll ask a friend who might know. . .

Last year, someone posted a detailed chronology of when each ANH model was begun and finished. I think it's in an X-Wing thread.

ILM was set up summer 1975, first models were being finished around Christmas 1975. Tunisia shoot was April '76. However, the sandcrawler must've been a late build:

'The sandcrawler model's proportions were worked out retroactively to fit the bottom third that production had built in England.' - Rinzler.

Thank you very much Charles~! and your confirmation friends :)

I will add the part by scratchbuild...

thanks Eric.

Some part is updated as attached images.
Engine exhaust hose? I don't exactly know what this part is called? :confused
Actually, I thought that part was used from any vintage kit, but the left and right shape are asymmetrical and it dosent seems a normal kit's part...
So, I finished the part by scratchbuilt and AMT vintage car.

thanks Eric.

Lorne is a heck of a nice guy, and he is amazingly approachable and friendly. I got the chance to ask him about the Sandcrawler last weekend. It was his recollection the full-size set piece was built first. ILM then had to match the bottom portion for the miniature.

(That might explain why the bottom is just a big rectangle in overall shape while the top has all the interesting angles. The two don't really match and you can see a sort of "dividing line" between the bottom tread section and the rest of the ship.)

He didn't seem to recall the "headlights," but he did say the "chute" R2 gets sucked into was likely built from scratch to match the full-size set piece.

He did remember the treads though as he was the one who made them. He told us the story of how he brought up the idea of getting an injection molding machine for the model shop because he was concerned there was no other way to make all those treads in the limited time available. Therefore, he made just one master and the rest were then copied using the injection molding process.

Hi Charles,

Thank you very much for your kind answer and feedback.

Your reply give very clear direction for my further working.:)
I will do it by scratchbuild

thanks Eric.
