Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit....Lid Finished-ish.

Re: Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit.....Possible?

I think the instructions at the bottom should be bold, they look a bit thin. Also it looks like there's a spelling error in the french instructions, you've got Prenez when it should be Poussez.

wow, fantastic work, and incredible screen caps, i sub'd this one, can't wait to see your progress.

Re: Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit.....Possible?

Thanks for your interest Rikarus.

Starting to really think about the lid now that stromos done the hard part. Have to decide if it will be 1:1 scale or not. A 1:1 scale backlit version of the instructions will be very expensive to produce, around $400 to get it printed and mounted on white acrylic, the original style, only lit from the sides, would be much cheaper to print but would probably lack that extra wow factor electricity gives.

Unless someone has the official measurements, will just put something together around Sigys hand.

This is going to be one of the great threads of '11. Excellent work guys, I can't wait to see the progression of this prop!

Re: Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit.....Possible?

Thanks for all the feedback. I'll get those wee things fixed up, as well as a few things I've noticed, and post an updated picture ASAP.

Some of the text seems to be about halfway between regular and bold, such as "SCUTTLE PROCEDURE", so that's been a bit of an issue. Spike, are you talking about the instructions at the bottom (in English and French) needing to be bolded? Because they already are. I think there may be a certain amount of heaviness added to that text due to the slight bright light/blurriness of the screen shot.

Thanks for your interest Rikarus.

I did the hard part? I don't THINK so, lol.

MrWebber, I think one option, which would look very close to the original prop, would be to print it on overhead projector paper on a laser printer, with the red and yellow sections just being transparent, then sticking some red and yellow plastic sheeting behind the appropriate areas.

Or you could make it REALLY authentic and colour it in with a felt tip pen...

Actually, come to think of it, you could maybe print the whole thing on overhead projector paper on a COLOUR laser printer. I'm not sure how good that would come out, but it would be cheap to find out.

OK, just a reminder of the original prop, as shown in the HD screenshot uploaded by Spike:

And now the latest incarnation of our recreation:

Interestingly, it never occurred to me until now that the original movie prop didn't actually count down. Even when Ripley returns to it to frantically try to shut it down, it still reads 10 minutes (and 5 minutes until it is too late to shut it off). One could argue that this screen is simply a list of instructions and not a timer, I suppose.

"Youve done a mans job sir"

I found with the Blade Runner lightboxes made that the printing on clear adhesive and mounting to white acrylic is the best way to backlight, its more expensive of course but the effect is better.

Muther is the countdown system.

Re: Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit.....Possible?

If anyone would be willing to make this prop for me (the whole unit) please contact me. I'd love to have this to display with my Alien stuff. Which of you masters will take up this mantel... In exchange for a big pile of money? Let me know! Great work guys.

I'm watching this build with interest as i love this sort of thing. Also those Bladerunner signs are awesome.

Re: Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit.....Possible?

One of my favorite shipboard devices simulated on a big screen. What I love most are all the warning signs and instructions that make it such a believable piece. Definitely looking forward to seeing a finished product.

I would say they are static numbers and never meant to move. That way the 'printing company' could apply different numbers depending on method of destruction and size of ship.

Re: Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit.....Possible?

pretty sure if you push the padme button it will ruin the whole movie...

...and the three that came before it too.

Re: Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit.....Possible?

Good to his word, as usual, Joberg sent me a vast amount of appropriate era Letrasets. He probably wouldnt want to be mentioned but this is a really huge help in putting a great replica of the keyboards together, will make a start when i figure out what the best basis for the keyboards would be.

Because theres so much material here, when im done, could send the set on to someone else to do their own and so on. stromos got first dibs if he is interested. Ive checked with J and he`s cool with spreading them around.

Re: Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit.....Possible?

Nice addition to the project!
And time to start on the key pads!
Another thing I noticed tonight, Tim, while perusing your pics, is that the lid on the device reminds me of a picnic cooler top. Coleman or Igloo perhaps?
It would make a decent (portable) unit if we could find a cooler to fit the whole thing into!
With optional beer storage of course.

Re: Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit.....Possible?

^ It does look like a cooler lid.

Also, I don't think the keys ever move, I think it's just one static piece with a light underneath.

Re: Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit.....Possible?

It would be an awesome esky I6, just add a little dry ice and some flashing LED`s.

Your right Spike, from what i can read from your HD grab, they have stuck small, cut out pieces of white acrylic on a base of white acrylic and stuck a light under them, the rubber like borders arent a stretch.
