Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit....Lid Finished-ish.

Re: Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit.....Possible?

^ It does look like a cooler lid.

I doubt it's a cooler, though.

The thickness, the blister dome shape, and the heavy-duty hinges are more suggestive of the kind of cast steel or aluminium hatches that are supposed to shut pressure (e.g. a blast) out, such as something that you would find on a smaller naval vessel, or possibly an armoured vehicle of some sort — look at the driver's compartment hatches of this vehicle to get an idea of the sort of thing that I'm driving at.

The size is just about large enough to let a man through, so it might be a crew hatch, perhaps?
Assuming that the raised base is an integral part of the hatch assembly and not something added by the prop builders, it might belong on a watergoing vessel, where hatches often are raised off the deck to prevent water pouring down in high seas.

And I still can't remember where I've handled it, but I'm still sure that I have ... somewhere.

Re: Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit.....Possible?

Your definately on the right track Vader, its very military.
I dont think anyone was suggesting that it actually came off a cooler, more that the whole thing is like one elaberate drink holder, or would make a great one for any BBQ.
Whatever the origin of the original, it was made from wood for practicality reasons IMHO so all that is needed is to source the lid to the appropriate hardware and it might also give a clue on scales. I havent started looking around yet so anything you can find will be appreciated Vader.

Thanks to Backlight posting this picture at propsummit.com, a few mysteries have been solved.

The main thing in terms of my possible project is the scale of the unit, its massive. Although the base seems to be cut down for the wall hanging, the SDU base would have to be at least another 300mm deeper. Rethunked.

A scaled down version that is set up just like the ones in Backlights picture, hanging on the wall, where the lid actually lifts up. The base with all the dressings can be reduced and dumbed down.

Re: Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit.....Possible?

With that many "wall fixtures" you'd think someone has to have one lying around somewhere!
I talked to my mechanic about the clutch plates today, and i'll try to get a pic over to him this week. Guessing the size to be about 9" across will limit the possibilities of available donors.

Re: Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit.....Possible?

Nice, ive done my head in a couple of times searching through diffrent clutch assemblies on the net, after an hour, they all look like six packs..

Same here!
Bolts up, bolts down, grooves, no grooves......
It'll drive a man to drink! ... oh look... scotch!!:love

Re: Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit.....Possible?

Showed pics to a mechanic friend today (not my regular) and he thinks it's out of the "inside" of an automatic tranny, NOT a clutch plate.
I'll hit a couple of tranny shops on Monday, maybe we'll get lucky.
Cheers, jeff

You know those things look a lot like wheelie bin lids.

Re: Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit.....Possible?

Yesterday I was flying home from Houston and in the terminal shuttle bus, I looked up to the ceiling. When I saw the emergency exit hatch, I thought, "Whoa! Could that work for the Nostromo hatch?"

Now that I've seen the actual pictures again...no. :( But it still looks pretty cool. My wife, of course, thought I was silly for taking pictures of it...

Re: Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit.....Possible?

Just going back to the issue in this quote.

Your right Spike, from what i can read from your HD grab, they have stuck small, cut out pieces of white acrylic on a base of white acrylic and stuck a light under them, the rubber like borders arent a stretch.

Looking at the black borders, it does appear very much to me to be Plastruct shallow styrene channel that's been painted black. Again it would seem quite likely given what it's stuck to as well.

Re: Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit.....Possible?

Still no luck on the plates. They're NOT from a transmission, at least nothing a dozen foreign & domestic mechanics have seen. I've had several "suggestions", ie: big motor casing, etc. but these have turned up nothing either. The latest idea is actually a ram base, as in the lift for a car, though smaller. Makes more sense than some of the "goosechases" I've been sent on!
The hunt continues.....

Re: Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit.....Possible?

Check out this screen used detonator from the collection of Bill Pearson. I photographed it today.

These were all machined by hand...they are not a found item. That clutch plate tool certainly looks like it might have been inspiration though.

Re: Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit.....Possible?

That's great Vos, thanks! And thanks to Bill for showing it off!
Did you get any other pics or dimentions?
I was hoping it was a found piece, but it wasn't looking likely. Still can't find the "clutch plate" either, so a good bet it's an original piece.
Did Bill say if any other 'bits' survived?
Cheers, Jeff

Re: Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit.....Possible?

That is beautiful! Thanks for photographing this piece, its been talked about for years but no one ever got a picture.

Re: Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit.....Possible?

The amount of detail in the sets for Alien is impressive. Though I guess that makes sense since 90% of the movie is spent inside the nostromo. I really like the glass tip on the detonator rod.

Re: Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit.....Possible?

That would be a great screen used prop to own, its easy on the eye and doesnt scream out anything. Imagine showing to a friend, "Whats that?"," Its one of the detonators that took out the nostromo", "woooooow"

I see your detonator and raise you three more, Space Jockey posted this on the twin thread at Propsummit a little while back, i should update them more.

Thanks for the awesome picture Vos, hopfully it will wet the lips of someone who can reproduce them.:love
This is all great timeing as i hope to pick up the mounted instructions panel later today.

Re: Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit.....Possible?

And here it is.

Was toying with having this made like my BR light boxes and push some light from behind but got the idea to use the old fluros from those boxes.

Theres no way i will be able to replicate the exact lid design with the level of skill or equipment i have but can make something fairly similar. Gunna take this one stage at a time and just do the lid first and see what happens, if it ends there i`ll have an awesome wall piece st the least. The measurements for the instructions pansl are 62cm x 26cm. This was determined by the size of the fluros.

Once again, uber thanks and credit to Stu, (stromo) for all his work on this and everyone else as well. I`d be happy just to have the panel, its something ive wanted for many years.

Re: Building the Nostromo Emergency Destruction System Unit.....Possible?....STARTED

These are going to be reproduced....100% accurately....I won't say any more for now as I'm not going to be making them....but stay tuned. :love

These... what? The label? The detonators? The lid? The whole thing?
