Crickets.
Measured out and cut a template for the lid design on a couple of cue cards, great stuff, can even paint it and will use to cut out a couple of pieces of ply as a top and base unit, brace between and fill the sides with something thin and plyable, not sure what yet. If this works, it should be even easier to put the base unit with all the detonators etc inside, together and join them up. Ive ordered one of the detonators but will just use the tops of similar bolt heads to make up the other three to complete the display.

Its not something i think you could actualy put in kit form but i will be takeing lots of pics along the way for those who want to put their own display together, just the template painted up with hammer finish paint would look great on its own.

Great stuff here Tim as always. I can clearly see where others would find a "leaping off point" with what you have done here so far.

Cause it was such a great day, got the first template cut out. It still needs some clean up and square off sanding but was itching to try the paint i picked up. I hadnt seen this one before and the main attraction was that it was much cheaper than the one im used to, very happy with the end result.
Once i can get the second template cut, it will become more clearer i hope how to trim off the finish. I think the pics show where this is heading. Might even get to use that Letraset soon:lol, sorry, in joke.

Just an idea, but, if you only plan to make the lid, it might be cool if you made the frame looked charred, mangled and bent as if it came from the wreckage of the ship. I mean, it looked like a supernova when the ship blew up so I don't think there was any wreckage, but it might be a cool way to display just the lid.

I love the idea Spike, looking at it that way never occured to me and its almost a tribute to Dark Star at the same time. For better or worse, everything ive done so far has been designed around the working lights and that nails me to that design but i would LOVE someone to tackle it with the flotsum idea of yours.
I still plan to do the entire unit, just thinking one part at a time, the clutch plates/wheel hubs are really the only things that need to be found, the tubes arent a stretch, the bolts are done and the keypad is just some cut acrylic. Making the lid should make the surround of the base unit much easier to tackle, its all a kinda slow learning process, i hadnt built anything at all three years ago and im in my forties. In scale terms the lid is around three quarters the size of the original so i wont be as massive as i thought.
