Building The Death Star - PRODUCTION

Now I'm really looking forward to the dish detailing. :)

Been holding off on that. Will be one of the last things I do. Someone recently shared some images that show more detail (pencil lines, etcetera) in the dish than I've ever seen before! Made me glad I've waited on the detailing! :)

Too funny!

That is friggin' incredible, Rob. I wish I had the time and money to make it out there - I'd help in a heartbeat.

But I'll tell ya what - I'll straight up trade my B-17 for your deathstar. And if helps sweeten the deal, I'll throw in the P-61.

For your big, boring, di-chromatic ball ;)

I think you'd be getting one helluva sweet deal, my friend :lol

The key is intentionally trying to go as fine as I can.

The section I did today - on the original - is the lightest secion on the model. So I intentionally focused on going with a light touch, with a finer spritz. The result - at least to my eye - is the closest I've come yet to the original.

I wish I could just redo what I've done already. But I can finesse the other areas. I will just spend some time each work session hand painting out the largest dots, the adding back in much finer black dots. Over time, this should slowly increase the degree of granularity, making it appear more fine.

Try lightly misting the darker areas with the original base coat. I have been in similar situations in the past with speckling and it has worked well. It will have no effect on the areas that aren't speckled so no need to tape the areas off again.

OK here's a sample of painting out the large black dots...

The images area about 50% of an area I spent about 30 minutes on. Can you see a difference?

Looks great Rob. It makes a HUGE difference.

Brad

It definitely smooths it out a bit. And your wife and mine most likely have white paint pens (that crazy hobby of theirs!) that can make the process go faster and more controlled. And as mentioned, I can go even finer than this.
