Building The Death Star - PRODUCTION

Don't know if you still need photos of the Death Star, but I went by the museum this afternoon:

Well let's give credit where credit is due.

I think Moe did a fine job all things considered. I'm not sure what reference material he had, but I know I've "scoured the universe" and had some help in getting shots.

Moe is a superb model builder and dish fit the bill, and was a solid starting point and inspiration for mine.

Gus I am honored and pleased you dropped by my thread.

I am hoping to "do your baby proud". I like to colloquially refer to it as a "restoration by proxy". The original model clearly has seen its wear over the years (you know that better than all!). Yet personally, I feel it would be a shame to modify the original model from its current form.

I hope that my representation will allow us all to see what it looked liked in all its glory.

Please feel free to contact me if you like.

Oh and by the way the area you show in that photo is exactly what I am working on now - thanks!

And before the armchair critics chime in ( ;) ), I know the shapes and elements on the upper dome don't align with those on the lower dome as they should. I stretched out the pattern on the lower dome too far, so things will not align. Can't do anything about it now unless I resprayed everything and started over.

OK I shrunk down the width of the trapezoid I'm working on now; did so by about one inch, and it looks better. In the pic above, compared to the pic a few posts back (of the orig), mine looks too wide. So I knocked it back a bit.

Looking good Rob, I reckon it's very hard to nail each panel. If you **** up one panel proportions, all the other are off. Thats very inspiring work !

Thanks for the pics Gus, they're great !

I started at the middle (of the lower dome; below the dish) and worked out.

I should have isolated specific land marks (larger shapes) on the lower dome along the equator first - about four of them - placing them where they need to be, then work the sections inbetween.

rob don't be to hard on yourself, I know your trying to be as accurate as you possibly can but when your producing something as unique and jaw droppingly iconic as the death star and when youve practicaly put your soul into a prop, and them sum. try and enjoy the process if you can, i can honestly say we all are,

stupendose as wallace would say!

Fixed it...

Looks great Rob! I may be able to come down again and do some more lights in about a month or so.
