Building the 8' Star Destroyer (superstructures done)

Thanks Dave ! Ive been looking for it into different manufacturer's catalogs for almost 2 years now and I never found one with the right shape (or size). They all are symetrical, if you look at the cross section of my drawings the left side is shorter than the right side (the opposite is true when looking from the other side of the channel lol).
 
Wow, you certainly have a keen eye there, Tox, and that's really cool that vaderdarth could identify that so quickly. That's what I love about this site... SOOOOOO many knowledgeable people and some FANTASTIC builds like this one. Great stuff, guys! :thumbsup
 
You are probably gonna end up having to alter one side of some stock material man. The stuff being produced today may not be the same or it might have been a custom extrusion for a product that is no longer made. :)
 
I was thinking of perhaps creating a jig for a router table..........then you just put the stuff next to the jig and zip each piece in no time flat. It wouldn't be time consuming if you set it up right. :)

I reman optomistic that Julien will update this thread with pictures of the finished 8' ISD, saying something like "Je suis desole - I simply forgot to tell everyone that the model is finished (in French! LOL)"

Oh well, at the very least it's worth rescuing this thread from Page 4 :cool

Thanks guys ! And sorry, that's true Ive been quiet those last few months.

The truth is those last few months Ive only been one day a week at home... And of course I've spent this day with my wife (when possible because my day off is not always the week-end).

I spent this little free time making molds for the ISD (trenches), Y-Wing and I've started to mold my hero x-wing upper fuselage. The fuselage is still in rubber (for 3 weeks now lol I need to poor some plaster on it to get it rigid).

I havent given up on the ISD though. I'm still trying to ID the missing parts ont he bridge (with no luck, I've just found a part), starting to ID the engine area (easy to ID a lot of parts but several ones remain unknown, I'm not even sure they are kit parts, I mean all the big curved pipes... I need your help !).

That's funny you post on my thread now cuz yesterday I finally bought the wood I need to start the hull frame. I bought a huggge plywood plate for this, I'm still refining my drawings but I should start to cut the ribs next week if I have some free time. Ive bought a saw that will allow me to easily get chamfreined edges.

Yesterday I finally found some time to glue some parts together to make... the very front assembly of the hull !

I've also been very pleased to find the same plastruct lamps which were used on the Dispatch pods (fortunatly enough, I have some spares !).

Another thing is that my wife and I are curreclty looking for a new house (closer to our jobs) and we're (I am :p) looking for a house with a room for my shop. I think we found the right one. The house will need some work but hell, I'll be able to build my ISD in this room ! :D

Thank you for your interest anyway, this project is far from being dead, I want a 8 footer, and I'll get one ! :)

Good luck Julien, hell even with all that life thing going on, you still have found time to do more than i ever could.

Well that wont be the best shop but I think it will be good enough for my purpose. The only bad point is that I cant paint in it (maybe with a paint booth, but seing the size of the ILM paintbooth where they painted the Med Frigate and the ISD, I can tell that I wont have the room lol). I'll find a plan to get it painted !! ;)
 
Maybe you could rent some time at a local auto painters/bodyshop? Itll mean hiring a van or truck to move her, but could be a plan?

Painting something this big, id want as much room as possible, its FREAKIN' MASSIVE :lol

Yeah that could be an idea ! I was thinking to paint her in my grandparent's garden, it's big enough it's big enough to get the paint diluted in the air to not bother the neighbors !

I'm planning to get her in 2 parts (there's a seam between two plates on the actual ILM model, that's where it will split in two !). I will get one 160 cm long part (the front) and one 90 cm long part (the rear, well actually the wide will become the lenght lol this part is about 130 cm wide lol). I should be able to put the parts in my car (of course it would requiere 2 trips but that's always cheaper than rent a truck).

My next mission is to find a 70 mm (OD) steel pipe, I would love aluminium to save weight though. I'm not sure about a PVC pipe, it could sag over time, even with this diameter. I dont think I'll build the side mounting points so it should be easier to build.
 
Scaffolding tube maybe? Im pretty sure its close to the size you need? Would be heavy though, but itll be as solid as a rock.

Good idea !

That's probably what they used !

I found a 73 mm OD scaffolding pipe. I rounded it to 70 mm to get a r ound metric size, but 73 mm sounds close to what I found they used. The stand itself is a smaller diameter, probably 60mm or so !
