Building the 8' Star Destroyer (superstructures done)

I'm still trying to ID the missing parts ont he bridge (with no luck, I've just found a part), starting to ID the engine area (easy to ID a lot of parts but several ones remain unknown, I'm not even sure they are kit parts, I mean all the big curved pipes... I need your help !).

Well at last I can contribute something useful to this excellent thread! :D
These screencaps are from the Star Wars Complete Saga Blu Ray set, but you will see that the bridge section and the engines are covered in pretty good detail (1080p on the full screencaps that I have provided the links for at the bottom of this post, but I have posted smaller screencaps below for the sake of those on slow connections!)

Hey John !

Thank you very much :) Great pics indeed !

Looking at the dome pic, I can notice they glued a part on top of the Gneisenau/Scharnhorst turret on the base supporting the dome. It looks like a scaled down 232 transmission part (same as the one used on the back of the X-Wing). Any idea about the part guys ?

I knew the domes were castings, but with this great pic I can now notice the whole thing (dome+base) is resin. Wow the original ISD is full of resin, much more than mine ! lol

Hey Rick,

Unfortunatly nothing, I have not been able to back home for a bit more than 2 weeks now, and my wife and I are buying a new house, we should move on december so I'm not sure if I start the hull or not. Maybe just cut the ribs ?
And I need to spend another $500 for the acrylic plates I need for the hull which are huge, so I think I'm waiting to move and get them shipped to my new house, it will be easier for me.

I'm still working on the hull angles, I'm pretty close of the truth but I cant be sure, and you know better than anyone than the hull angles affect directly all the angles of the engine area, I cant go wrong on this...
It's really hard to nail, to bad there are not more pics of the original under construction... It would have been easier !

If anyone here worked on the shape of the 8 footer hull, I would be interested ! (I would cross check with my drawings, I'm sure of the angle of the ribs -more or less 1°- but the angle of the hull panels are harder to get right).

I also have hard time to figure how deep are the brim trenches, I got a result very close to 2" (whithout the edge extensions) which is very appealing because it's a standard measurements, but I cant be really sure since I have no kitparts with me...

Good luck with everything. Best to take your time and get it right the first time. I wish I could help you on the angles, but, as you know, the 4-footer and the 8-footer are completely different. I wish we could just scale up what I've done.

Hi Julien,

How about if you use foamboard to mock up the hull in full size. Hell of a lot cheaper than acrylic, and easy to add/correct. Afterwards you can use it as a template for the acrylic.

Good luck with the build and house.

Cheers,

Wasili

Thanks Rick, yeah unfortunatly proportions and angles are different on both models !

I have 2 good ortho production shots of the 8 footer (you know the kind of pics with a black background, the model and a ruler, but there's no ruler because it's too big :p) made by ILM but like every of these pics, they're not 100% true : paralax, lense distorsion, angle of the model and of the cam, the model is so big it was probably not easy to shot this way. I'm working from those pics though and crosschecking with other refs.

Hey Wasili,

Thanks dude, yes a foamboard or cardboard mockup would be helpful, I wont cut the acrylic until I'm sure of what I'm doing lol

Thanks for the wishes !

Hey Julien

I've looked through a couple of 1/76 and 1/72 232 kits (both 6- and 8-wheeler) and no go ... actually I don't think it's from a 232 ... looks like the upper and lower "cylinders" are equally spaced .. which it isn't on the 232 ..

I think we're looking at something completely different ... shipstructure part, truck part, big scale tank part ... could be anything ... I'll keep looking

Thanks Niels,

Yeah that was just an idea, the part behind it is from the 1/700 Tamiya Gneisenau/Scharnhorst so it's quite small ! We can see the side of the part on the right, it's pretty thin. I was also thinking about parts from the Lang, cant check right now but I dont think it's a match !

Hi
I saw one 8' long and it was horrible. I noticed that when you have an 8 foot destroyer you need to concentrate on the engines.
I recently saw a 4 foot one and it was good looking. The guy had used lights in the middle of the engines and he pulled it off.

Hey Julien .. quick questions regarding the construction ... the black sheets you used to build the conningtower ... what are those?? black acrylic, acrylic primed in black .. or is it styrene?

Some more work !

Still out of town but I managed to bring with me a box of the Tamiya Enterprise ! :)

I've been able to work on some parts of the hull.

I've started with the front plate, using the kitparts I drew the shape and tried to match as close as possible the panel lines.

That's how I work :
