Borderlands 2 Maliwan Hellfire build

Been really awesome to read this; can't wait to see more progress! Keep up the good work!

Thanks man, I hope to have a lot progress to write up soon.

So I have a question for those who might be able to help, I want to paint my gun blue with enamel paint, then place yellow vinyl wrap instead of painting on yellow; it would be helpful to know how well vinyl wrap works on enamel paint, like adhesion for example. I'll still try a test piece regardless but it would be good to know beforehand any info or tips. Thanks.

Update:

So I have been doing final body work, doing spot filling and milliput, then sanding/wet sanding and primer a few times. I'm pretty close with finishing the body; I have added the last major pass of milliput which will be sanded/wet sanded primed until "perfect" (I reckon 2-3 more passes of priming left)

Here it is painted with white primer. I use a skateboard so I can spray outside, then wheel it into my outhouse to be protected from things like insects.

I have also realised that I've never posted an image with the handle connected, so I thought I would show it to help visualize how it will look when it's done. It's just a "dry" fit being held up with socks. (keep in mind that the handle is no where near complete.)

My plan at the moment is tomorrow, I will be sanding the milliput and fixing spots and prepping, ready to be primed on Thursday (that's my day off) so once the gun is ready for final paint, I can set it aside and work on the smaller parts of the gun. (Like the light up screens near the front, the rail, the yellow vinyl and other bits and bobs)

Until then...

Update:

It's been a fair while since my last update, between the last update and now, I have had to make changes to my college plan and only now is my work levelling out to a controlled state. So my main focus is the handle, the gun cannot be painted unless the handle is part of it. I have been sculpting with more milliput and I used styrene on the top for better shaping. I have been using a rasp to really grind away unwanted milliput and filed/sanded smooth. It's almost there. The holes in the handle are soft spots which need filling with milliput; I swear that's the hundredth hole I have had to sort out...

I also added 2 styrene pieces to both sides of the stock I overlooked in the past.

Lastly, I have matt vinyl which will be used as decal (like white for the stripe, yellow for patterns and orange for the "light up" areas.

So to finish off, my plan of action from here to end is:
Finish handle, adhere to gun, paint blue, apply vinyl, detail paint, cel shade and clear coat.

Until then...

Yeah... Hell yeah.

I lost a month to a Dark Souls build but I am back oh the horse as well. I worked on my grip a well today. Funny.

You know what they say, great minds think alike... Part of my time went into my axe prop for a college exhibition so at least I was building something. I look forward to your progress, I'm still stumped on how I'm gonna do the display panel thingy at the front of the gun.

How do you mean? Method or madness?

Maybe stumped was the wrong word, I have a general idea but nothing solid. I was just thinking of doing a vinyl cut out with the text and the bits around it (I think the text says something like "LRNeGO6a INDUSTRIES.") The problem with that is the text and the extra bits would be really fiddly to cut out, so basically, I'm not 100% on how I will approach it.

You can use a small drill size ( .125" ) and drill straight into the corners of the shape and x-acto the rest away. That will help reduce overcuts.

Remember there is also a reveal area within the cutaway. I suggest, in your situation and comfortably with polystyrene, that you do the cutout straight through the piece and backfill with styrene to create the reveal.

The problem with that is the entire gun has been layered with styrene so cutting into the gun to get the recessed area is tricky, and with no real power tools on hand (a dremel is the only "power" tool I own) It's not likely I'll be doing that, I might try to give the illusion of depth though. It's probably something I should of addressed quite a while ago. Sigh...

Maybe in the future, I'll make a V.2 and do everything right, learning from the mistakes and approach things differently.

Sounds familiar... :)

Really though, you can use a drill bit that size in your Dremel. Consider it. I know your timeframe is tight but you would probably get a better result in the end.

You know what? I'm gonna go for it. I'll bring my gun into college Monday and use my spare time to cut out a groove out both sides using college tools and while I'm at it, I can engrave the thin lines which connect around the gun aswell.

Update:

So after some persuasion from BRDencklau, I decided to do some work on the "panel things" by giving it actual depth instead of trying an illusion or whatever I was thinking of. (I usually just wing through things with no thought.) So if you have read through my thread, you'll know that the guns core is foam, with a layer of body filler, then a final cosmetic changed with layered styrene, so cutting into the gun wasn't too much of a hassle. I started with cutting out the outline and eventually cutting out the styrene layer as 1 piece; this helps with carving because I have a styrene border around the cut out, keeping it's shape. After that, it was just carving until I hit the right depth. The holes are there because I cut into the cavity of the front end.

After they were done, I glued on a piece of 1mm ABS to fill the gap, then milliput was added around the ABS to blend it and add structural strength.

Over the next couple of days, I will add more to it until I am satisfied with the strength and the appearance, Once done, I will start planning a vinyl stencil to give that light up panel look to it.

Until then...

My "nose windows" and magazine have a reveal as well. This is a literal plug and play. Lol.

Sort of an update today and also an idea:

So I have continued progress on the "nose windows" but felt like I don't need to post images because it looks pretty much the same, this post is more about the idea.
For those of you who play BL2, you may notice that guns sort of magically float on your players back so I had the thought "Hey, why don't I make my gun float on my back?"
I thought about how I would achieve this and came to the conclusion of using neodymium magnets.

The plan is to have a disc with 5 magnets embedded into the disc and have 5 magnets embedded in the magazine so the disc is attracted to the magazine, this disc will be attached to a harness which is strapped to your body to hold the disc on your back so when the mag comes into contact, it snaps through your shirt or whatever your wearing.

Here is an image showing the mark points.

I will commence drilling shortly and I'll be ordering neodymium magnets on Friday so expect progress soon.

Until then...

Wow! Good thinking with the harness!!!!!
That's the sort of thinking that Maliwan needs :p I'm loving the work dude, keep it up. I'll be watching! :ninja
