Borderlands 2 Maliwan Hellfire build

There are several people making kreig axes these days...

Yeah. I didn't realize that until I had already... committed to it. I liked how yours turned out.. you also cast, but not sure if you got many buyers(?).
But that's not the same with this Hellfire-- I think it really should be cast not to sell but really for how it could look.

I understand. I've been working on Maliwans since last year as well. Just shelved my first iteration and started on v.2. This time to perfect scale.

Update:

I got a lot done over today, I started more work on the handle. I'm using styrene and milliput just like on the gun.

I also completed the rail and barrel today, using 4mm sintra and 1mm styrene (It's updise down, just imagine it flipped). I will make the sight at a later date.

I also used milliput around the edge of the styrene circle on the mag area, the rim is now flush! I'm really just waiting on the primer to arrive, then I'll work on painting the base! The paint plan is: White primer/base, mask the white stripe, paint on the yellow areas, also mask of, hit the whole gun with blue, remove tape after cure, paint on the black and orange, couple coats of clear, wet sanding with 500, 1000 and then 2000 grit sandpaper. What do you guys think?

So on to the questions you've been asking, I have been thinking about molding/casting this gun, but It's probably not gonna happen, I feel like the gun isn't screen accurate enough, the stock is WAY too thick, the mag isn't slanted, the angles on the front aren't in the right places and a few other things that other people would not appreciate the way I built the gun, If I will do a cast, I will remake a "perfect" screen accurate version. I have an ambitious future plan though, I have recently been teaching myself 3D modelling and as you may or may not know, every gun in Borderlands 2 has a base (body) with manufacture parts added to it. This means every piece from every line of weapons (SMG's, shotguns etc.) can connect to each other. I'm thinking it's possible to model every seperate piece and either conncet them from the model, or mold/cast those pieces and physically join them together, meaning you can build your own Borderlands gun! I have already seen someone 3D print a slagga in pieces (although that's just because he couldn't print the whole gun in one piece) and that's where the idea stemmed from.

Also BRDencklau, I forgot to ask before, how was your vacation? Also how are you gonna approach building V.2 of the hellfire?

Progress looks good and that painting sounds like it'll come out nice. I've never actually used milliput... have you ever used Apoxie Sculpt for a build?
About casting: screen accuracy makes sense. Hopefully a V2 comes out with a spinning mag! *swoon*

In terms of the modular weapon system: there actually was a thread started about that a while ago. The issue is that the gun parts are not designed to fit each other. They fit their own manufacturer's class (torgue stocks to torgue grips to torgue sights, etc) but they are not actually designed to fit each other. If you look at some guns with different parts you can see that sometimes the model overlaps itself and quite often leaves gaps and such. Tend not to notice that in game but if you look for it you can see it.
I think it's probably possible to do but would give anyone a headache. You would probably have to change each model to fit some sort of universal connection.. not sure.
I saw that slagga-- for some reason (maybe the paint?) it looked strange. My next project was going to be a slagga but it seems like everyone gets there first!

Apoxie sculpt and Milliput are practically identical, just Apoxie sculpt comes in pots and Milliput comes in sticks. With the fitting problem, I would make slight adjustments to the base of the guns to adapt every piece while still making it as screen accurate as possible. I think once the base is figured out, the other pieces will follow up nicely. If it is impossible to make every piece fit perfectly, I'll guess those who would attempt to build one have the know-how to fix the problem manually, like sanding, filling, that kind of stuff. If I do A V.2 Hellfire, It will spin, glow and whatever else you want it to do!

How about components with built in adjustments, to allow for overlap. That was my plan.

That could work aswell, There are probably many ways to remedy the problem of overlap, it's just finding the right solution. I feel like we should open a new thread about this...

IIRC some people wanted to team up and do it but got dissuaded because of the overlap problem. I for one would be down to work on it. I wonder if the project is too big to do without consent from gearbox? Maybe we could start the official bl2 gun service haha
how is the hellfire coming?

EDIT: I have no idea where that thread was. Also, sorry for the thread takeover

As long as the takeover is related to the theme, I really don't mind, don't worry about it. I also thought about the approval of it, but what I have seen with the guys at gearbox, they seem really happy when people make cosplays and props of borderlands stuff so it seems like they might be fine with it, as long as it's not mass producing. Primer arrived, I'm filling minor imperfections at the moment, I'll update with other stuff in a couple days.

Update:

I apologize for the lack of updates, I also apologize for this update because I haven't done that much on it over the past week, college gets in the way, it's also my Birthday today and I've finally caught up with all of my stuff.

So what I have done to the gun is began progress sorting out the groove along the top of the gun; to get both sides 90 degrees instead of wibbly-wobbly. What I have done is glue 3 strips of styrene (2 on the sides, 1 along the bottom) and started to build up milliput to make it flush.

I have also re-alined the back sights to the right spot. I have made a simple tool which has a 90 degree angle, and my plan is to squish in the milliput with the 90 degree tool so it is flush. Images for that will come in some once I've got it figured out. Once I am satisfied with the groove, it'll be on to finishing the handle.

Until then...

Update:

So progress has been slow building up the walls to be flat, I've been busy wrapping up college work, and I've been planning a new project. (no spoilers) I have done the majority on the right side, and about half on the other, once done, it'll be sanded smooth and possibly a pass with body filler if needed.

Once I have finished both sides, I'll move on to the front cavity where the barrel is placed. I'll also start work on the sights soon once I figure out the best way to shape the handle and make it accurate.

Until then...

I just started my thread back up on the GearBox forums. Yay, Borderlands!

Awesome, I saw your wooden Maliwan SMG on your facebook page yesterday, I'm glad to see your back to business on the SMG.

Update:

It's been quite a while since the last update, mainly due to college and lack of material. I picked up a couple packs of milliput and did some more shaping I was unhappy with on the gun.

I started on the "belly" where the trigger is. I didn't like it's unusual shape so I slapped on a rolled out layer of milliput and smoothed it out. Once cured, I'll sand/file it.

Next was a strip that goes along the gun. During my styrene application and re-shaping, I lost the sharp edge along the way, so I added more which I will file to make it sharp.

I then finally started some proper work on the handle, I have added milliput almost all of the way up (I haven't decided the final shape of the highest section) and have been doing my best to file it. I'll probably bring it into college and use bigger files and rasps for some serious shaping.

I now actually have a deadline for this now, June 6th is my planned day for it's photoshoot so plenty of time to figure out the best logical way of painting this. Work on the rail will start again pretty soon, BRDencklau has kindly offered me his plans for the whole rail/barrel assembly, as he is also working on a Maliwan SMG.

Until then...
