Borderlands 2 Maliwan Hellfire build

that's a pretty sweet idea for the weights, thanks Bayouwolf! I have sort of considered molding/casting this, I just don't really have the money to do so. If enough people are interested in a cast, I may scrounge enough money for silicone.

That is a good idea, Bayouwolf.

I feel the same way, Dr. I am about to take a little vacation but am going to come back to my Maliwan for a fresh start. I have one "interested" party other than my wife and that doesn't mean my Grace gets molded.

That's good to hear your going back to your maliwan SMG, there is only 1 maliwan SMG I am aware of that someone built and complete, hopefully the next two to complete the guns are us. There is a small prop I'm making in the future, I will be molding/casting it regardless of interest because I don't need to buy a heap of silicone and I don't need to rely on an "interested" list.

Update:

So I have adheded all of the styrene sheets and filled/blended the edges. Once it all cured, I gave it a coat of primer to see gaps, lumps, imperfections in general. what I saw was quite a lot of bumps where the milliput accumilated around the edges when I was filling them, some of the edges weren't flush either so my solution was to file the edges and use the file to remove lumps. (I don't really have a good image that shows filing. I guess this one will do.)

So after the first pass of heavy filing, I gave it a wet sand and re-primed the stock. The edges were flush and there was no excess but there were pits and low spots which need blending/filling. I used very small amounts of milliput to fill them in and watered them down for extra smoothness.

That's basically it for the stock, I'm really happy how it came out and even more happy to know that my idea worked! The edges are super crisp and the stock is super strong and sturdy. I think this is it for a short while, I'm going back to college in a few days and the work I need to do for college is gonna chew my time up. I may fit in the odd hour on the gun but not much more than that. I think the next thing for the gun is the handle.

Until then...

Mini update:

I made the trigger today out of 4mm sintra and 1mm styrene for details, glued together with Seroius glue. I have already glued it to the gun, but this image was taken before that. I'll show it completed in the next update when I upload more stuff. I just wanted to show a "before and after" comparison of the original trigger idea I had, to me, it's quite tragic that I thought the first trigger I made was viable. It also just makes me laugh how much stuff I've changed over this project.

The next update is actually gonna be reworking the mag and butt plate, instead of the handle. (I'm pushing the handle forward to another time when I think of a good solution for it, just bear with me on that one) That's all I had time for today.

Oh man, I am so deep in this other project... I'm super stoked seeing this go down. Awesome

It wouldn't happen to be borderlands related would it? I don't know if you know this, but I'm kinda into borderlands, you know... just a bit...

Well me too, but I do favors for friends. I'm building a Halberd from Soul Caliber called Scarlet Thunder. Playing with lots of different mediums. Mostly water blown foam for the last couple weeks.

Sigh...borderlands..

Ah, so that's what you've been casting. What's the foam like with density? Does it feel like EVA foam or something completely different? I ask this because one of my friends was interested in casting a foam prop but has no idea what it's like. He doesn't want it too soft, or too hard.

I'm playing with smooth-on flex foamit-X condensed. I've been documenting a bit on my Facebook thing. Eventually I'll put a thread up on here.

Update:

It's been a little while since an update, so I'll get straight to it.

I added some sintra backsights to the gun by carving out a channel, glueing the sights then milliputting around it.

I have also been shaping the handle. I gave it a couple coats of urethane resin.

Another thing I had time for was working on the display stand. Again with the sights, I carved out a channel, glue then milliput around. This is to hold the gun in palce.

There will be more pieces for the display once I attach the handle to the gun. I have been working on the rail but haven't got enough progress to really talk about it yet. I will start applying body filler to the handle at some point, another wet sand, extra bit and bobs on the gun left to do before paint. That still won't be for a while until I get to painting though.

Until then...

Update:

So over last week, I came up with an ambitious plan... Do what I did to my stock... but on the front! The reason I thought of this was the same reason for what I did to the stock, to eliminate weak spots and make it super strong and durable, although the front end was originally tougher than the stock, the underbelly was still poor. The approach was exactly the same but there were so many more angles to work with and a lot more milliput was required to fill the gaps.

So here we are at it's current state...

So every inch of the gun is rock solid, I accidently whacked my door with the gun while turning round and I dented the door this time, instead of the prop! I'll go as far to say you can use it as a blunt weapon. At this moment, I'm still adding bits of milliput to edges and sanding flush, then I'll hit it with primer and that will be it for the base of the gun, no more glueing strips of styrene to the gun!

I'm still working on the handle, I haven't exactly found the best way to strengthen and shape, and I don't wanna have to glue strips of styrene to it because it is a long boring process, I'll figure something out.

Until then...

I totally can't wait to see the end result of this! I think I need one for my siren cosplay, but I just can't stop myself from making Torgue or bandit weapons every time I make a gun >.<

I'm getting there with it. I also like the style of bandit weapons but I prefer maliwans, and their curves... If you know what I mean.

Anyways, since the last update, I have strengthen every weak spot I could find by using a file to scrape out the foam, filling it with milliput and then sanding flush. I'm waiting on more primer but I'm pretty sure there is no more sculpting left to do on the body.

Recently, I've been annoyed at trying to get a flush, clean edge lip around the mag, so I glued on a piece of styrene the shape of a circle. I used a weight to push down the styrene to the surface. For some reason, I used my Xbox.

I will add milliput round the edge in the future. I have also bought some paints for the gun, I got some yellow and orange acrylic citadel paint, and "harbor blue" enamel spray paint. I have white and black paints on the way, in the mean time, I have been testing the paints compatibility between each other. I have also began progress on the rail and barrel, just not enough to really start posting of yet.

Until then...

Thus just keeps getting better.

I am just back to square one today.

Been following this build for a while and it looks great. How did the green putty hold up? I almost ordered some but heard it kindof reverts back to a soft stage sometimes.
Also, have you thought about casting? Could be sweet with some LEDs inside for the glowy bits in-game. That would be sweet!

Do you mean the squadron green putty or the milliput? Either way, their holding up how they should be. I have thought about casting but as I mentioned in a post before, I need an "interested" list (a dozen seems like a good amount of people) to fund for the molding/casting process and actually gain profit from doing so. LED's would be cool though and a hollow cast would mean I could fit in electronics to make the mag spin! If only I could...

Yeah, I'm glad the putty worked. I meant the green spot putty.
I think roto or slush casting the gun would give it that extra something. I'm making Krieg's buzz axe and just kind of assumed that I could get people to buy it so I went ahead and ordered silicone and resin which cost me about $190 that I now regret-- it seems like no one might be interested. I hope that changes by the time I finish :unsure
But if I was doing yours, it seems like this gun is begging to be cast! Maybe keep it in mind before you attach parts, just in case people are interested? I might be!
