Boba Fett helmet build, ongoing project.

Re: Boba fett helmet WIP (first build) NEED SOME HELP, PLEASE

it's been a long long, LONG time coming but i've just gave my bucket it's first coat of primer despite not having installed the 'ears', ear caps, rear vent, ranger finder and visor they are in the post on their way to me though.

anyone interested i'll be posting some pictures later tonight, for the first time in over 3 months. hopefully there is a notable difference.

Re: Boba fett helmet (first build) primer-ing but no ears, stalk, visor or ranger fin

first update in a while, i have some pictures for you this time for you to peek at.

since last update, i focused on thickness of the bondo/filler on the cheeks on the edges as it just too fat.

once i dremel and sanded away a bucket load of material i began work on the little defects here and there.

pictures before primer.

my bucket currently has one big vent, that will be corrected later though
PICT0262-1.jpg

also need to build up the bit for the ear cap to fix to

then my first ever attempt at using primer in my life.

im not one to 'blow my own trumpet' but im really happy and proud of how its turned out to up this point.

main problem to correct is a split along the top of the ridge running around the helmet
burly picture to show problem
PICT0278.jpg

thats on about 75% of the ridge so have to fill and strengthen that.

pointers, advice :thumbsup , comments, criticism :thumbsdown

Re: Boba fett helmet (first build) primer-ing but no ears, stalk, visor or ranger fin

Looking good mate. Theres no runs or orange peel effect so I say you done a good job :)

Like I said the primer will show up any imperfections such as that split on the ridge. Just fill the issues up then sand and re primer, just like youve already done. Your going to have a mighty fine helmet at the end of it all.

Keep it up.

considering the quality of your work i'd say thats quite a compliment, thank you.

Honestly mate, that is Top Dollar Workmanship, and just like Terra1, you deserve it all the more because you and he never gave up, you never lost heart and you have, like him, produced a piece that ANYONE should be proud to own and display. Not only do yours and Terra1's threads yield incredible results, but they are a true testament to patience, self belief in what can be achieved when someone puts their mind to it.
Awesome work!

Nice update man... I know the feeling of it seeming to drag on and on.

The first time I applied primer to my helmet I could finally get a better feel for the end piece and that some real progress was being made.

All in all I think your helmet looks damn great. The cheeks on that look perfect.

For the ridge above the eyes...is that all bondo that you built up?

that is very kind of you, i am very proud of my build. i think i have impressed myself more than anyone, i never thought i would be able to build something to the level that i have. regardless of what people think, i am chuffed to bits with it but when i get a comment such as yours atlanthia/darren, its more than gratifying and encouring to push on with my build. thank you

im done pouring my heart out now :confused

the primer really brings it too life i think, it was the first time in my 8 months build that my gf showed interest in it and was impressed, primer is a powerful thing.

the right is probably 2/3's cardboard and 1/3 bondo. i would do it completely different if i was to do it again. i haven't been happy with the cardboard base to the ridge since i did it but i haven't got the cohones to rip it off and re-do it.

update regarding build, smoothing out and will be apply some filler primer over the weekend, hopefully my visor is here by wednesday next week. come on USPS, get a move on.

Re: Boba fett helmet (first build) primer-ing but no ears, stalk, visor or ranger fin

so its one step forward, two steps back for me this time

while i was smooth out all the bits and bobs before giving another go with the primer i decided the ears werent flat enough, for the ear's to go on flush enough, they were too round with the helmet so i've sanded it right down. and adding filler and smoothing it out, nice and flat, at least im trying to.

some pictures of the damage i did

this also shows the use of the cardboard for the ridge, which i regret doing but couldn't think of another way at the time.

waiting for filler to harden to sand down at the moment.

Re: Boba fett helmet pep build (my first build)

My helmet has a lovely yellow colour to it from the filler primer, more sanding tomorrow then normal primer and then first bit of paint. It's having a temp paint job, royal navy theme. More to be come so keep watching, will be explained.

And thank you for the kind words Crank.

he's been out in the sun and got a tan

It doesn't even look like a pepakura piece!

Well done, my friend!

Re: Boba fett helmet pep build (my first build)

some very nice comments, thank you
the poor quality of the pictures don't show you all the little pin holes, which is good because it makes me look better and there is no visual defects

side note, visor has come in the post, be putting that in at the weekend.
spent all last night sanding down the filler primer for about 3 hours from the moment i got home from work.
didnt have time to reprimer, done that tonight though.
sanding it down again tomorrow then hopefully get first bit of paint on it tomorrow.

does anyone know the best white spray paint can to get from halfords, i just want a nice clear, clean looking white and dont know which one to use because they are all so slightly different.

and Lord Magneto, my problems with cardboard, it was too soft, so you still need a good amount of filler/bondo onto of it so it you're thinking of using it as i have, use it only as a very basic primary base for filler/bondo

so yeah, which white spray from halfords is the white-est?

Re: Boba fett helmet pep build (my first build)

Awesome mate, pure awesome. I totally forgot but do you still want those pics of the visor install I did, I cant remember if I sent you them or not?

Also why do you need white paint for? Car paint is a very thick hard type of paint, its difficult to get good results with it if your using it for masking etc, you need to take your time using it and go in layers. Also it takes a good 2-3 days to fully cure. If you want good white paint thats workable in a can you cant go wrong with that plasticote enamel aerosol. I picked it up for a uni project and it came out really nice. It fully dries in about 10 minutes.

Re: Boba fett helmet pep build (my first build)

small update, from the last pictures it has now been sanded down and then grey primed and as it sits at the moment in the garage it has had some white paint splashed onto it, mask it up again and hit it with some black in a few hours, pictures to come later.

Re: Boba fett helmet pep build (my first build)

Wow man! That bucket is looking really sharp. Your patience definitely has payed off, can't wait to see some paint on it. I'm considering building this helmet soon, maybe after I remodel it some and tweak the details a bit.

Re: Boba fett helmet pep build (my first build)

Looks like you "found the art after removing the un-needed bits" ;)

A Most impressive pep-prop to be sure.

I like it more than my Don Post helm.
